You have to keep in mind that he clearly has low self-esteem and that from his perspective she has been selflessly trying to keep his curse in check constantly, even in the middle of a fight where it looked like she was dying. Meanwhile he's over here struggling to use what little he has offer to help. Yes he honestly did help her out and if he wasn't there she would have probably died. But from his POV she's doing all of the heavy lifting and he feels like shit for it.

She suppressed his curse, came up with a strategy, held off the alien, and pulled Okarun to safety all at the same time. Sine she is his first friend, he is comparing himself to her and feeling disappointed in himself. He really holds himself in really low regard and has a hard time communicating even though he wants to put his best foot forward.

He was willing to fight the alien, which is pretty selfless and he told Momo to release the curse after she got it hit because he didn’t want to see her get hurt. Idk maybe he feels he was being selfish but that’s not how he acted.
