also, aang never really had parents of his own. He was a monk, raised by other monks and men. and with all the traumatising things that happened throughout the series, no wonder he turned out not to be a great father. it makes him human and imperfect

I agree when you’ll get episodes 7 and 8 you guys should watch them both together.

I think it was in this reaction Ange mentioned the eccentric rich dude reminding him of someone, and I kept watching a little ahead and he’s very similar to Howard Stark!

Sudirf

makes him a real person with flaws and shortcomings not some God like figure who can do no wrong

My issue with season 2 has always been how this season wraps up. It feels like it came out of nowhere and a lot of deus ex machina happens. Up until the two parter episode, you know the one I mean, this episode is pretty solid imo.

I really liked what they did with Aang as a father. I wouldn’t have liked it if he was just a perfect mythical hero now. I guess we might have different views on that. Keep in mind, Aang wasn’t horrible, he just had a favorite, which is a minor flaw in my eyes. It humanizes Aang more. No parent is perfect. The mistakes that parents can make will be a running theme in the show going forward.

I like how they showed Aang wasn’t perfect too, no parent is. It humanized him a lot more. He wasn’t a terrible dad, just not perfect.

It is a bit annoying to do that to Aang’s character, but I do get where Aang’s identity as the last airbender would cause him to devote more time to Tenzin.

Now that I'm rewatching the full episodes of season 2 with you guys.. it's pretty decent, definitely not as bad as i remember or as some people make it out to be lol. Although my biggest issue with s2 remains to be the fact that Korra chose to side and train with Unalaq so fast.. she barely knows her uncle and just sort of blindly trusts him, and pushes her dad aside not wanting to fully hear his side of the story. Can't wait for you two to get to the back half of this season

Fair point about Kya - I couldn't remember if it was 100% confirmed that bending type can't skip a generation, so I still included her descends as "possible" airbenders. Either way, she could still pass on aspects of airbending culture, and I wouldn't be surprised if it impacted her waterbending! I think it's also interesting then that Bumi isn't like "Tenzin had dad's attention, Kya had mom's, and I had no one's" based on their bending. Not comparable to be the LAST AIRBENDER, but Katara was the last *southern* waterbender and definitely picked up/adapted some techniques that weren't the norm (not only blood-bending), so I wouldn't be surprised if she wanted Kya to learn what she discovered. But Katara didn't have the same issue of focusing only on her child with the same bending....it's just fun discussing character dynamics haha

Maxine

I don't think we've ever seen a case where a type of bending skipped a generation - Every bender we've seen has either had the same type of bender as a parent, or the parent was a non-bender of that same type with no mixed heritage. So we can't assume that Kya could have airbending kids. Bumi could though.

Can't wait to watch this episode with you guys 💕

I know it's pretty controversial, but I actually like how Aang wasn't the perfect dad. Like of course we know that it wasn't intentional or malicious (Aang is a sweetie, and Katara would NOT stand for any of her children being mistreated!), but it feels very real that when Aang wasn't busy with helping maintain world balance, he would've spent more time with Tenzin than his other kids. It must've been so exciting to have another airbender in the world with him, to carry on not only the principles and culture, but the *actual* bending! We don't know if Aang ever tried to get Kya and Bumi as involved in learning about airbender culture/techniques as he did Tenzin - after all, there's a chance their kids or grandkids could be airbenders - but it's very human of him to be blinded by the actual airbender among his kids. And Aang was never a perfect character, so I like this characterization of adult Aang!

just as a minor thing to clear up, Jinora is the one who was looking at the statue, Ikki is the one that was led away by the spirit
