Like, I was expecting a probing joke, what I wasn’t expecting was the camera angles, the drawn out nature of the scene, and the horrible brutality of the added “we’re going to rip out your uterus afterwards” element. I’m gonna be honest, I think some editorial control would’ve been prudent here. Like, I’m a victim of SA, and I’ve heard funny jokes about the subject, that wasn’t one of them. And I did get what they were going for, it’s a classic subversion of expectations, you think aliens are going to probe people for dispassionate, scientific reasons, because they’re so aloof and apart from the human condition they don’t really get why it’s a violation. But then you have this trio of aliens who, as the scene goes on, are clearly just creepy rapist scumbags who even express preferences for their victims and basically drug them like any regular human piece of shit. I get the joke, it’s just not very funny to me. But, apart from that, this is a banger of an episode and I still happily binged the next three just on the strong positive impression I got from it.

2024-10-12 15:50:35 +0000 UTCI've seen many people laugh in the last 10 minutes, especially regarding the lines (of an old lady sexually harassing a teenage boy, let's not forget it). People even say that it was a funny episode (or hilarious even) and no, they are not talking about the first 10 minutes... They are talking about the grope scene, the old lady, the aliens, the minor in underwear discovering that she has powers, and so on. I just don't get what's funny about that. And if that was actually meant to be serious, the OST and the lines, heck even the voice acting, would have been way different and more serious. That's not the case here which made me very very uncomfortable : I didn't even laugh or smile the entire episode. When it was over, I really sat there thinking : what was good about that episode ? I don't get it. Yet, when I read some comments online, they mostly say that it was chaotic but super funny and amazing. I guess that kind of humor is not my cup of tea ... I do agree with you about the fact that some people don't know how to react, but I've barely seen any reactor (or animé watchers) or people commenting online point out the obvious problem with that kind of sense of humor. I've seen manga readers (not many) complain about that kind of jokes, though. To each their own.

I've seen a lot of people saying that there are a lot of sex jokes and another major "rape/grope" scene... Hopefully it's just in the beginning as you say... MT has a different kind of tone (they don't put the uncomfortable scenes as a joke) so that's why I personally can stomach MT. Otherwise, I would have dropped that show from the first episode haha. But what you say is interesting and comforting. :) Thank you!

You can google/imdb all that. Momos Ex-boyfriend even kinda resembles him. So to hear this line “I am an awkward guy” sets her up and when this Ken Takakura says his name, it quite literally blows her mind. I love how they did that. And I hope that’s not the last of Ken.. Other than that, Momo stood up to the bullies more than once, in school, nonchalantly sitting down, and in the U.A.P. with psychic superpowers. She is quickly becoming a fav.

If that wasn't the manga's intention, then something in the animé isn't super faithful to the manga : it could be the voice acting, the ost, I don't know. I agree with you about the unnecessary angles, they really made me uncomfortable ; especially combined with the jokes... If they are exaggerated in the animé, then I don't have anything bad to say about the manga. I actually do not mind a bit of fan service (I love Mushoku Tensei for example, although some scenes made me uncomfortable) but the focus on the female character in underwear, her being tied up and the rest... That was super violent, in my opinion. Maybe it's because I'm a woman myself haha, I don't know. Perhaps I have a weird sense of humor or maybe I take things way too seriously and this show isn't to be taken seriously (I know that it's sci fi lol I'm not saying that I took aliens and ghosts seriously, I'm mostly talking about the other scenes that seem "real"). I also work with teenagers which makes me a little bit sensitive about these types of representation/sexualization and violent scenes, especially with teenagers. If you a tell a teenager "give me your bananassssss haha", they'll probably think you are psycho and a pedo. Yet, when it's in Dandadan, it's "funny" because a ghost or an alien said it to a teen in an animé... Your comment made me think that my reaction may also be due to the fact that it's supposed to be the first episode, meaning the introduction to the show, and as a first episode, it was a heavy one. Too much information, too much colors, too much screaming, too much of sex jokes, too much of everything. I'm sure that was on purpose but if that's the case, then maybe I'm not the right audience for it. I wasn't expecting that at all. I've seen a lot of reviews online saying that it was the BEST pilot to a show and that it was already animé of the year, and I thought "did we watch the same thing?!". But again, everything has their own opinion. I may have had a different opinion if the scenes were later in the show. Probably. You are right, I shouldn't judge an entire story or an entire show just based on the first episode, which is why I would like to see a few more before dropping or continuing the show; especially if you say that more serious moments are coming up. 2024-10-07 15:44:09 +0000 UTCHonestly I loved this show so much. A lesser anime would've made that alien probing scene way more sexual, would've objectified Momo way more than it did. I didn't feel like the camera was objectifying her, only the aliens were which made it way easier to watch.

Isn't that fetishy and pedo behavior ? Right from the first chapter ? I'm genuinely asking... Made in Abyss is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable, it doesn't turn the uncomfortable scenes into a joke when Dandadan uses uncomfortable scenes to make people laugh (the weenie and everything) when it shouldn't be funny at all... That's where I draw the line, personally. The overall tone of both series. When you watch Made in Abyss, you are shocked and almost sick to the stomach. When you watch Dandadan, you laugh or simply say "wtf" when in reality... There's not much of a difference to what happens on screen, if you know what I mean. Made in Abyss heavy scenes are heavy ; Dandadan heavy scenes are funny and entertaining, according to some people. That's what I don't accept in this show. Made in Abyss makes you think. Dandadan makes you laugh : I've literally read almost no comments pointing out the rape allusions regarding the first episode. It's just brushed off like it's nothing, when it should be a big deal. I agree with you that Made in Abyss may be too much for Carlie. I take that back. Thank you for you comment. :)

2024-10-07 15:03:43 +0000 UTCIn my opinion, it is a scene that is done to make you uncomfortable and i know it may be painted as a joke, but it really isn't the point, they explain very well the reason behind the aliens to try to do that, may it be cause it's the first episode, later you would notice that the show has a lot of serious moments like this but maybe the anime didn't make it super accurate as the manga. What i really despise about anime in general is the innecesary angles on minors/adults, (i was watching the episode with my little sister and it really went awkward in some moments, i already read the manga but the angles in the anime are just super extra and make it really weird) so i got why you get that feeling like the show is trying to minimize or make something serious a laughing matter, i found comfort thinking it in like, they're aliens so gr*pe it's not a thing for them, but again, just my thoughts! :). I would appreciate some comfort or realization with my comment, if not, it is okay, because your opinion is valid after all.

I love made in abyss despite it all. But that show is waaaaaaaaaaaaay more uncomfortable, fetishy and the author is like, an out and out pedo and you can tell... For what it's worth I would not recommend MIA for calire and ange, especially carlie.

It doesnt happen all the time, But there is at least one more time a similarly uncomfortable situation happens.

Especially when people use some of the lines from the episode as if they were not references to rape and sexual assault. I don't think you can joke about everything, especially when it comes to rape, sexual assault, pedophilia and so on. But this show does it and it's entertaining ? I find it odd. Japan is well-known for its "rape" porn culture for example as well as its love for "Lolitas", schoolgirls and so on. When you realize that this first episode jokes about these things, as an adult, it's just weird to me. When I see people joking about it in the comments or saying how funny that first episode was (without talking about the obvious), I find it very disturbing and concerning. Mineta is criticized for doing way less than that... Again, just my opinion. Thank you for your comment.

My opinion - don't read it if you are not interested or if you are going to be insulting - Trigger warning : uncensored language. The r*pe and s*xual ass*ult jokes were not funny nor entertaining to me ; especially when you remember that they are minors. Also, I've read that this kind of humor (sexual allusions and r*pe jokes + the weird fan service with minors) occurs multiple times in the manga, so be ready for more. I also felt sick, as Carlie has mentioned it, it was scary and uncomfortable, not funny at all. In my opinion, that's one of the problems with this first episode : they are turning rape and SA into a joke (haha aliens haha funny haha bananas hahahahaha weenie, super funny) when it shouldn't be. Let's not normalize this kind of humor, please. That episode felt like I had taken something... Or like it was some fever dream... I've heard that it gets better and awesome afterwards from manga readers. However, I'm glad that you have watched this because now I think that you can watch Mushoku Tensei and Made in the Abyss which are 5 times better (my opinion, not a fact) in terms of art style, animation (especially MT) and the uncomfortable scenes are not turned as a joke, so that's a bonus. I'm not going to repeat what I wrote about the art style and the animation as I feel like I've said enough already. Great OP though and great backgrounds !
