Your gripe about the romance is fair. Many people gripe about it. As for Asami, your instincts were right, she was intended to be evil initially, but some of the creators liked her so much, they made her a good guy. Also herr character design is inspired by Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist

They had no idea it would get renewed for a second season so each part (except seasons 3&4 that were renewed together) feels like pretty rushed cause they were trying to wrap up every thing)
