Deku essentially means "worthless" which is what Bakugo's been calling him his whole life and how a lot of society treat quirkless people. Uraraka heard it as Dekiru which means "you can do it" similar in meaning to gamabre, which is a common phrase we've heard in many anime. Izuku is now embracing this change in mentality for himself. Thinking he would never be a hero and having no one to support him in doing so, essentially being deemed worthless in a hero based society to having a whole heap of people cheer him on (his Mom, All Might, Uraraka, Iida, the rest of class A, etc.) and finally having himself believe that he can achieve his dream. Essentially that "he CAN do it." That's why this play on words is so significant for him to choose as a hero name. Loved the choice of Uraraka as MVP! So happy you're both loving my girl. She has one of the best storylines in the series in my opinion and seeing her continuously make decisions to make herself stronger (physically and mentally) is so nice to see. I completely understand Carlie's analogy here for choosing Shoto as MVP for episode 10. However, I think where her example differs from this situation is that Shoto would not have even thought about making that change himself (at least not this soon) if it weren't for Deku, unlike a goal you've been working up to that someone encourages you and then takes credit for. Shoto went into that match wanting nothing but to piss off his dad whereas Deku approached it with the intention to "save" someone even if it cost him the win. Helping or saving someone is ultimately the most important trait for a hero which Deku demonstrates a lot better in this episode than Shoto. Shoto did put in the hard work of starting to deal with his trauma, but Deku is the one that changed his whole worldview to allow him to even begin to look at the trauma in the first place.

With a mean connotation it's used as "not good enough" or "talentless" (what Bakugo meant), with a good connotation it's used as "determined" or "doesn't give up" (what Uraraka thought it meant)

Personally, I would have given it to Tsu, simply because nearly everyone seemed to unanimously LOVE her hero name. Froppy one of the GOATs fr fr 😤 Carlie keeps coming with the unique takes too! Never heard anyone *not* instantly love Izuku picking "Deku* as his hero name. Still appreciate the different opinions though. I respectfully disagree with the notion of him "hiding behind the name." Uraraka helped him put a positive spin on an insult, and now, Deku will be the name of the greatest hero in the world post-All Might. Turning negatives into a positive for everyone feels very appropriate for Izuku, IMO 😊

2024-09-12 14:31:23 +0000 UTCFor "Deku"; that name was a childhood taunt bestowed upon him by Bakugo. It is the last character when you write out "Izuku Midoriya" in Japanese. He gave THAT character, "Deku" the meaning of "a helpless loser" whenever said to Midoriya. Think back to Demon Slayer, how Muichiros' brother would say "the 'mu' in Muichiro stands for incompetence", same concept. Here, he's taking back ownership of that label, overtly, and living in the phrase "Deku is the name of a Hero!"......Hence, Bakugo seemed PERTURBED lol.

2024-09-12 14:23:21 +0000 UTCJumpscared by Ochaco's parents and All Might XD But I kinda understand why it could be the case. In both cases, the atmosphere was building up to something tensed up. For Ochaco's parents one, we were properly introduced with Stain, and then the show set up a dark ambiance with Ochaco getting back home. I get why you could have this reaction. For this one with All Might, the atmosphere was very tensed up with Iida's case. They were in a safe environnement at UA, but psychologically you're not at ease because of Iida. Still funny tho x)

Maybe I’ll be wrong but also based on Dekus monologue, I think Ida is abt to get his ass beat ngl 😭
