For her sake 😂 I WILL say that Carlie's comments on Todoroki's mom are unique, and I very much appreciate hearing different opinions! I think a vast majority of people (including me) cut her a lot of slack. Perhaps she was too traumatized by everything to think about trying to see Shoto? Maybe she was not allowed to leave the building? Maybe she was simply scared? I don't even think Carlie was being harsh per se. It's just a take you don't normally hear. Relationships are two-way streets, after all. Even if you can argue some of the responsibility of mending the relationship falls on her, Todoroki will take it upon himself to start the process anyway. He doesn't blame her, and it's something he needs to do to be the hero he wants to be 😊 Also, I think it's worth noting that while Bakugo is WAY more aggressive in his approach than Deku, they both tackle Todoroki and his fire the same way. They both egg him on to use his full potential and to not hold anything back. Hell, Deku himself even says he should stop screwing around, and that everyone around him is trying their hardest to win, so he should too. He just also is genuinely trying to help Todoroki and doesn't like seeing him sad when he uses his fire. Bakugo just wants everyone to fight their hardest so the fights are fair, and he can prove he's better without any doubt.

I can understand why a lot of ppl here are defending Todoroki's mom, but I think Horikoshi (the mangaka) wrote her as a grey character. Based on later details, I don't think she would have approached her son, even if she had the chance. The complexities of the Todoroki Family is one of the throughlines of the series, so I'm looking forward to seeing how Carlie and Ange react to the unraveling of their story.

Obviously it was a mental break due to endeavor being a horrible person. But she still threw boiling water on her child that she loved. That is a major fuck up. She absolutely deserves some of the blame. Not most of it, but some of it. Anywho just my opinion on the matter. Hope yall are having a good day.

2024-09-07 18:54:22 +0000 UTCDefinitely interesting writing this episode like you said: Bakugo's start line was his first public win which to him is a self-acknowledged loss, Deku's start line is him realizing that his stakes are higher now that his mom also knows about his quirk, he has to actively work on mastering OFA since he cannot afford to be reckless and hurt himself like he's been doing anymore if he doesn't want to worry his mom any further, Shoto's start line is him confronting his mom finally, Iida's start line is him facing the reality that his brother, his hero was defeated and what that means for him going forward. This episode was such a good turning point as well as intro to the second arc!

I'm also well aware that Bakugo's character is extreme. I've read and watched the entire story multiple times, I know what he's like. You're more than welcome to just see it as comedic relief, I'm not trying to change your mind and like I said, that is how it's played off in the scene. However, Horikoshi is usually pretty intentional with his writing and includes subtle comments on hero society not behaving as they should throughout the entire story. Having Ojiro and Shoda drop out of the competition earlier on in the season and everyone be okay with it is supposed to parallel Bakugo wanting to do the same but not being allowed to. Add to that bringing in Stain and his ideologies about fake heroes being introduced at the same time heroes are acting like this is intentional, even if the show plays it off as a joke. And with this exact incident being a main point in the events of season 3, it clearly plays a larger role in the plot. Again, you're welcome to take it at face value as a joke, I'm not trying to change your mind, but thinking about stories and writing further than surface level and commenting on how it impacts other storylines is part of engaging with the story. My original comment is MY interpretation of the situation, not everyone's. But saying that restraining and muzzling a child on national television is a "throwaway joke gag" is wild.

She was LITERALLY driven to insanity by her monster of a husband. ALL BLAME should be put on Endeavor IMO. As far as Shoto going to the hospital... I don't even think he's going to "fix" their relationship. While that may be part of it, I think he's more so going to get closure and see what his mom thinks about him letting go of their terrible past when she's clearly still stuck in it (living in a psych ward and all that). Just some food for thought.

As a few people have said Shoto's mom isn't able to contact him because of the restrictions while she's in the mental institution. I personally think it's really important that it is Shoto's decision to go talk with her because then he's deciding the type of relationship he is having with someone who hurt him. It gives him the power in deciding how to fix their relationship and how fast that goes. Yes, she needs to be making an effort with him as well, but her forcing a conversation on Shoto first or starting that dialogue if he didn't want it just because she wants to fix the problem would be just as bad in my opinion. What they do to Bakugo at the awards ceremony irritates me so much!! I know it's played off as a joke but when you really think about it, these adult, pro heroes who are responsible for taking care of these children have restrained and chained up a 15 year old kid on national television. That's beyond public humiliation. Seeing everyone just go along with it and treat him this way and seemingly have no problem with it is so heartbreaking to me. Like none of these adults thought this was a bad idea??? Especially when they were completely fine with the two students dropping out and not accepting their positions earlier in the tournament for not feeling like they earned the spot, but with Bakugo it's not acceptable that he doesn't want to accept first place for the same reason. It just goes to show that the importance is placed on strong quirks and putting on a performance, not acting like a hero. And as much as Bakugo might be pissed off, loud, and stomping around, what he's saying here about not feeling like he's earned the spot is VERY hero like and honourable.

Both Deku and Shoto got one, and another character will get one, which classifies them as “the origin trio”. Just a note for analyzing those episodes for whenever they come!

The only way for her to speak with Shoto is for Shoto to visit her there, and he never did that because he thought his presence would upset her.
