The dad being an a** seems like an obvious trope, but I actually am more leaning toward him being a misunderstood parent: he loves her but is awkward and not outwardly affectionate. He truly loves and treasures his daughter, and his way of showing how much he cares for her is to make sure she grows up strong and competent, so that she can remain safe; lip service and praise are not enough, and can actually lead to arrogance and complacency. Though I do think he mistakenly is lacking in that paternal nurturing department. He probably sees it as a weakness. Or he's just awkward with being affectionate. I think this is supported by him instilling strong and noble values in her. If he doesn't care about her at all, why go out of his way to make sure she has noble values, and to ensure she's raised properly? He didn't seem cold to me, just not throwing heaps of praise upon her. He's more of an awkward realist to me. Ideally he could have praised her while at the same time telling her not to let it get to her head, and that life can throw the hardest trials even at the strongest people.

There might be other regions that also do this "tradition" but from what I know, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese all gift fruits like bananas, apples, etc. for health. I'm guessing it's also because fruits are easy to eat without much preparation.
