Absolutely loved this movie! Should we do Princess Mononoke in September?

Howl's Moving Castle REACTION!

Comments

You guys are going to love princess mononoke.

Gavin fox

Loved your discussion at the end and your comments though the movie made me laugh so much. Like where do you guys find all those funny things to say😭🤣 when Ange called the witch a marshmallow sent me … lol

Mathilde

omg yes Suzume!

Kiri

Yes please to Princess Mononoke!

Surgenium

OMG, yes, Nausicaä!!! I don't often see it recommended enough, especially to new Ghibli fans, but it is such a classic!! Along with Laputa: Castle in the Sky, of course, they are my childhood favourites!

Carol Yu

Howl’s Moving Castle is my favorite studio ghibli movie! so happy you enjoyed it ^_^ I recommend Suzume to be considered for a future reaction. it’s the same director as Your Name and doesn’t disappoint! it also came out pretty recently :]

# vivi

Thank you for keeping the subtitles, it mean a lot !

Maximilien Leymonerie

Princess Mononoke for the win! Is an All TIme Great!

Everett Allaire

My favorite Ghibli movie will always be Porco Rosso. It also has a really funny English dub.

Monkey bing bong

Those are my 2 favorites as well :). Especially Princess Mononoke. I’m a sucker for the nature themes! Really gives them a chance to show off their beautiful art style, too.

Jonathan DeWitt

Totally agree! The themes were really well touched on. I just wished I felt for the characters more. But I understand that it’s hard to fall in love with characters within just 1 movie as opposed to a 20 episode anime where we’re given ample time to get to know them.

Justin

Princess Mononoke is still my favorite Miyazaki film

Alijah Edwards

i love how carlie is so invested XD

Frozzen Edge

BEGGING for perfect blue in the future

usopps nose

I have heard other creators mention that Ghibli can be harsh on copyright and will strike channels once they have multiple Ghibli reactions up on youtube.

beansprouts

Yess Princess Mononoke's my fav. Nausicaa's also good, an OG classic.

angelalala

I would recommend The Wind Rises if you do other ghibli movies.

Justin Johnson

Hisaishi cooked 🔥

Kevin T

Yess Princess Mononoke is my favorite Ghibli film, even over the greatness that is Spirited Away!

Kevin T

The utter horror at Jack's true form 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I 100% recommend The Secret World of Arrietty!

chui

I would love Kiki's Delivery Service!

Nellie

There's a Howl's Moving Castle book which this film took inspiration from :) I recommend it to anyone who loves the movie. There are a few differences between the book and the movie, but I've seen people describe the book for fun as how Sophie sees her story (the movie being Howl's romanticized perspective haha)

Nellie

Fun fact: Josh Hutcherson (who plays Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games) voices Markl! Carlie and Ange getting mad at Jack's transformation sent me 😂 It's like when the Beast in Beauty and the Beast turns back into a human lol. Carlie's "bit of a red flag" comment about Howl's breakdown also made me laugh.

Nellie

Y’all should do way more than just a couple more Ghibli movies! Please watch Whisper of the Heart, Ponyo, and Kiki’s Delivery Service! You should also watch Weathering With You, which isn’t Ghibli but it’s the same director as Your Name

Nat

i love this movie so much. merry-go-round of life is one of if not my favorite song from any movie or tv show.

Astronette

Yess please watch princess mononoke, it’s my favorite studio ghibli film, Howls moving castle and whisper of the heart are tied for my second fav

Hollowluv

Ponyo is actually good I just watched it a bit ago

eduardo jaimes

nausicaa of the valley of the wind plz do the best

MATTHEW TAI

Please watch Princess Mononoke in sub though!

poisonivybag

I'm really hoping they watch the sub

poisonivybag

I agree with Ange, I like Howl a little better than Spirited Away. Spirited Away is an absolute masterpiece, but this feels like it has a bigger story with a classic romance, plus it's Christian Bale, Minnie Driver, Billy Crystal, and so many other AMAZING VA! My husband and I discussed this many times and our thoughts on her curse involve her state of mind. When she's not thinking about herself, she gets younger. In that scene where Howl tells her she's beautiful, she gets self-conscious and turns old again. Fun fact that I'm sure someone else has already said... When they first meet at the beginning of the film, he says that he's been looking for her and calls her "My girl." You could play that off as him pretending to know her just to get those soldiers to go away, but at the end, she says to find her in the future. He's literally been looking for her since he was a child. :)

Angela

Yes Princess Mononoke would be awesome!

Shelby Baumann

Ado - Godish is showing so much of her different voices she can do and it has a really nice groove and flow; It also contains english and german phrases. If there is still place for another Ado Song I'd really like to see your reactions to "Aishite Aishite Aishite", it also shows many different ranges of her voice and the song is overall very eerie and it also includes a lot of crazy growls and crazyness. "Godish" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i_nc5GGIsI "Aishite Aishite Aishite" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8BlNEKq0r8

I mean it's definitely confusing. I mostly like it because of the music and the aesthetic and because Howl is my husbando lol. but some themes are beauty, kindness, what makes one feel young, there's also some strong anti-war messages like in most Ghibli movies... so there, at least you have something to think about

Martina

I think Howl from the books is very much not super attractive but is very vain. So I think that's where the hissy fit comes from.

AttackRunRepeat

Rooting for that you also react to Laputa Castle in the Sky :)

Niklas Kernke Ferreira

Loved the reaction, thank you! My top 3 are How's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away (in that order), so YES to you guys reacting to Princess Mononoke ❤️

Mone

and Howl is also saying that "there's no point in living unless you're beautiful", but he can turn into a monster, so we know he's just overcompensating lol. that's why they can both accept each other as they are.

Martina

as for why Sophie keeps changing her age, I have two theories: 1. she looks as old as she feels at the moment. at the beginning of the movie, she's young but she acts like an old woman - doesn't want to go out etc. but once she gets cursed, she looks old but acts young. so basically she needs to break her curse herself, by acting or feeling young 2. she breaks the curse when her feelings for Howl get stronger, like Ange said. I'm not sure which is right, what does everyone think?

Martina

Princess Mononoke is my favorite ghibli studio film. Too bad I can’t stand English dub. Will you still be watching the English dub version?

Amiguresu

I recently watched this too with my fiancée and we were both confused most of the time. The music and the animation was beautiful though. 10/10 in that aspect. I actually disagree on your opinion on character writing. I felt like the characters “loved” each other way too quickly. If a random dude walked up to a girl in a dark alley and held her arm (i dont care if you look like a handsome model), they’ll most likely find that creepy and unsettling. Also, why did they forgive the witch so soon after everything she’s done just and allow her to come back and bite them in the butt time and time again? I wanted to feel something when Markle told Sophie he loved her but the character had zero backstory and I wanted there to be a reason why Markle cared so much for Sophie (maybe he was an orphan or he was never shown love by his own parents or siblings). I didn’t know what the purpose of his character was. Same with Jack. What’s the purpose for saving the missing prince? Why was he cursed?

Justin

Howls Moving Castle is my favorite of the films, it's just one of those films that I can watch repeatedly and always come away with a new understanding. I first watched Howl's Moving Castle when I was entering middle school and my self-esteem and self-worth were at its lowest. Watching Sophie deal with her curse made me feel worthy in who I was. I love that there isn't a clear reason for Sophie's curse switching back and forth, but to me it always seemed very closely connected to confidence and self-worth. This movie is the reason I started simply accepting compliments, not worrying about being demure and non egotistical in others eyes, just allowing me to love me.

DandyZombie

Yes please! Princes Mononoke is literally my favorite movie ever and has been since childhood!!!

Jumod Jones

Could you react to My neighbour Totoro in sub please 🙏

Rubie

Absolute YES to Princess Mononoke!

Meg

one day when I have my own house (fingers crossed that it's soon!) I want my room to look exactly like Howl's room ❤️

Martina

absolutely yes to Princess Mononoke, it's the best Ghibli movie in my opinion, even if Howl's Moving Castle is my fav :D

Martina

Howl's Moving Castle is based on a book written by Diana Wynne Jones. The book goes much further into Sophie's family, she has 2 sisters and her mother is a step mother. She sees herself as untalented and ugly so resigns herself to work in her father's hat shop forever. In the book Howl tries SO hard to break her curse but she actually has some magic and is keeping it on herself. So the moments when the curse is gone is showing how she's unable to feel ugly and that she'd be better off old to keep up the appearance of the curse. When Howl is complimenting her and the curse drops it's because she starts to believe him. The last moment when Sophie says she loves her hair too is a show of her accepting herself that she is in fact beautiful. I highly recommend the book. It's lovely.\

AttackRunRepeat

You SHOULD do Mononoke. Abso-LUTELY. <3 the reaction as always, guys

DudeTrue

Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is what I'd consider a masterpiece, or damn near one. Along with Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Kiki's Delivery Service is one you both would love as well. And maybe Nausicaa: The Valley of the Wind. Princess Mononoke is very good too, of course. But IMO it doesn't have the same level of charm the others have.

JN

If Letterboxd ever asked me for my top 4, Princess Mononoke would be one of them. So personally I can't recommend it enough.

Scott Johnstone

Princess Mononoke & Nausicaa are probably my favorite Ghibli movies. Honestly worth watching them all from the start of the studio (the ones you haven't seen of course).

Jason N

Omg one of my fav’s along with spirited away, kikis delivery service, tbh just all of ghibli lol such a cute film “that’s my girl.” Ummm hello? Swoon

Super Novice

Princess Mononoke was my favorite as a kid. Only ever seen it in English, such a great movie. Never heard the sub and it would just be weird after watching these movies so many times in English lol. The English dub cast kills it.

John

I haven't watched the sub version of this. But Christian Bale KILLS it as howl

spring deerling

ITADAKIMASU 🙏 This movie and castle in the sky are my favorite Ghibli films

spring deerling

Oooh, I've been so busy this week, I didn't even know this one was coming! This was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. My dad loves Studio Ghibli films, and we'd watch them as a family every now and then. "Castle in the Sky" and "My Neighbor Totoro" are also top tier IMHO.

Molto_Benny

Before I watch the reaction - YES. Please watch princess mononoke! It's an incredible movie, easily one of my favourites of all time.
