Avatar 3x18-3x21 FULL REACTIONS!

What an amazing journey! One of our favourites that we've covered on the channel.
For those wondering about Korra, watch our discussion in the finale. We go through our future plans a little bit there.

I personally think the energy bending ties in very nicely with the overall philosophy of the show; that everything and everyone is connected. But even as a kid, it felt a little weird that taking the bending would end the war. Like, is there a rule that the firelord has to be a bender? What are the political implications of him still being alive? I know it's a kids show, but I wish that was made a bit clearer.

Susan Beasley

I can't believe my ears Carlie the katara fan talking about toph not having loyalty with crushes..... shame on you lol jk

BornUnMotivated

Absolutely loved re-watching this show with you. Your reactions, thoughts and discussions were wonderful and I can't even count anymore how often your comments almost made me spit out my water from laughing. Someone probably has mentioned it already but I just want to throw in a little fun fact as well: You got really hooked on the soundtrack during the finale and also mentioned that it sounded slightly different. That wasn't your imagination. Most of the music was created by the composers with MIDI tracks. However, the composition for these last four episodes was recorded using a live ensemble and it really helped elevating the conclusion of this series to another level for me. Thank you for this experience and giving so many of us the chance to relive the ride of this show.

Phaerroh

It was an amazing experience to re-watch this show with my favorite reactors. Really happy you both watched this. Always looking forward to all of your videos(:

MikeyMike

Honestly, I think Korra is not necessarily needed. You can just keep it with Aang and the ga(a)ng and it might even be better. Korra's story is pretty good but it's nowhere near (personally) as great as the original. So it's honestly entirely up to you guys to watch it or not.

Crytica

I really want you two to watch LoK. I know it won’t be for a bit and whenever you guys have time to get around to it, but it adds so much to the world building. You will probably see a lot of hate around it but most people are just salty it’s a different vibe than The Last Airbender. I really like Korra and the vibes the show can bring, but it is different and that’s okay! I wouldn’t want a repeat show. Also, the time off you have before watching it will be good! Like I said, they are different shows and time off could help adjust to the new characters

Kelli Lawrence

KORRA! KORRA! KORRA! KORRA!

MelanieRS

Will you watch Korra next or a new show?

RiftRusher

I think only season 4 was web only? Could be mistaken. But yeah they didn't know there would be more than the first season. I personally always felt like season 1 started off on a fairly bad foot because of this, but that each season after got progressively better.

Paden Snell

Yeah. I agree with this. Korra got a lot of shit when it first came out. It seems like sentiment on it these days is much better... I think Korra is an excellent series overall. Buuuut it's still really hard to stand next to ATLA, and it suffers a bit from that. And season 1 of Korra always felt a little rushed. They didn't know they would get more seasons. So they tried to cram an ATLA sized story into 11 eps, and it was a little rough. The show really finds it's footing in seasons 2-3 though I'd say.

Paden Snell

Ange spitting facts at the end of Ep 19 discussion. They way you broke down how the Avatars are responding to Aang was pretty much spot on. You might as add yourself as avatar Ange to school Aang in the ways.

Amrith

While you raise a good point that Zuko was also not shown to physically do it. There was a lot of build-up a dedication to making it clear that Zuko put a lot of effort into developing that skill. Enough that it wasn't a question of if he knew how, but rather if he could do it in the moment. For Aang we didn't get that. Just a small scene showing us that Zuko taught him the basic principle and that Aang understood it fundamentally as using Water's principles. We however, didn't get enough to really "ensure" us (the audience) that he *could* actually do it. For example, using Zuko as the example again. In the same episode where he learns to re-direct lightning from Iroh, we also witness Zuko put in the effort to learn how to bend Lightning. In the end though, he was unable to. There wasn't enough setup to know whether or not Aang wouldn't have a similar block in not being able to redirect lightning.

Undeath Ghost

Lots of speculation that one of the animated movies they're working on right now is the post-finale where Zuko (and Azula????) go to find their mother.

Undeath Ghost

Someone has probably mentioned this already but the Voice Actor for Azula says that she can't watch the finale of this show because of the places she had to go mentally to get her voice lines out the way she did. Also, the reason she got the job of voice acting Azula in the first place is because she was the one voice actor who applied and didn't scream her lines in the audition and instead said them coldly.

Jerni9

Yeah, but Zuko also learned how to re-direct lighting without physically doing it until Ozai shot it at him.

Antique-Item

They didn't mention the lion turtle much, but there was actually a very brief line about them in The Library episode, when they were sitting around reading. Really easy to miss though, I definitely did my first watch as well lol

Skippy

This is such a simple way of thinking, capped off with the "my opinion is objectively correct" cherry on top

Balanatro42

For Carlie: You May wanna read the Comic "The Search" to get the end for Zuko and his Mother. It honestly always bugged me too, how we never got a proper end for that in the series.

trews1

i think u guys should watch korra they are both very diffrent shows but if were comparing i would say its equal to or better the animation the dynamics of the characters the villans and them explain more makes it better for me

Centric

To this day this is like the only show that has such a perfect ending to it where I just feel happy and complete about the ending. My favorite parts about this finale was the breakdown of azula. She's had such conviction and strength since day one and never faltered till the end. Seeing her cry and lose it like that gets me everytime because you know that she probably didn't want to live her life this way but seeing that it worked for her father probably strengthened her belief that ruling by fear and oppression was the right way to live. I don't know if she ever turned her life around or what but I hope she did eventually change her perspective on life.

Dune

Nothing was explicit. If you boil it down, they all said don't take killing off the table. Whatever you decide, stick to it. Nothing was explicit. Explicit means they out right said "kill ozai." They all would have killed oazi I agree, but even Roku said "you" must be decisive meaning at the end of the day, it was his choice. When it came to it, he didn't want to so he took over the avatar state and stopped it

Nate Terry

Well in the scene zuko was showing him the movements and how to do it but I think they meant we never saw zuko actually shoot lightning at aang for him to redirect it so they were probably unsure if he actually learned.

Dune

Vinland Saga isn't completed. And Mob Psycho's ending was good but wasn't perfect or almost perfect IMO.

JN

Fair point, but it was practically explicitly implied (and later confirmed) the past Avatars wanted Aang to bring justice to Ozai by taking his life. Then we see them literally about to end Ozai's life when Aang was in the Avatar state, until Aang took control and said no.

JN

What a show, and what a great experience it was to watch you both fall in love with it! ATLA and Vinland Saga are my top two, with Frieren coming very close to these. I mentioned it in a reply above somewhere, but the message and philosophy are so important. While it is technically a kids show, it has a deep and compelling story that transcends the show itself. The reason I hold ATLA and Vinland Saga at the same level, is because they share very similar themes. Both of these series tell a story about a character that wrestles with their morality and their sense of justice (even if it is a bit more light hearted with Aang). For Thorfinn, it takes him much longer to reach a point of having his own principles and ideals, and is a bit more realistic in this regard. However, season 2 Thorfinn is essentially sharing the same world view as Aang. Both of them are willing to fight in order to protect the people they care about, but both of them are reluctant to do so, or at least feel it's wrong to be hurting others to some degree. These stories also share the ideas of true goodness and true peace. Something that exists only when we can hold ourselves accountable our own wrongdoing, and are able to show compassion and understanding, even when we're being wronged ourselves. I'll leave this with a few lines from Aang in S3 EP6 that I think perfectly encapsulate these ideas in a few sentences. "Roku was just as much Fire Nation as Sozin was, right? If anything, their story proves that anyone's capable of great good and great evil. Everyone, even the Firelord and the Fire Nation, have to be treated like they're worth giving a chance."

Gabriel Barott

Try Mob Psycho 100 and Vinland Saga

Antique-Item

I couldn’t tell if you guys forgot about the scene where Zuko taught Aang how to re-direct Lighting, or if you were confused on whether or not he had actually re-directed lighting before?

Antique-Item

I think definitely read the graphic novels in your own time and give the world a rest for a little before you watch Korra. Korra is great but you shouldn't have to feel overloaded by your schedule while trying to get used to an all-new avatar and a changed world.

DandyZombie

TBH even if I do believe s3 has the strongest eps I'm also biased cause Zuko is my fav character in all fiction as you must have guessed xD and is pretty much his season. But yup s2 is more consistent.

KaijinGarou

The show actually showed a lion turtle in the library episode, 2x10 which is kind of neat. It was a very brief moment but Aang saw it in a book in the episode. It even made the edit in your youtube video. I timestamped it in case you want to see. https://youtu.be/E-geOtUCrhU?list=PL6ooj5C_N-Eu4bryPZHwEr3YZ-JsH25hB&t=505

James Keller

Excited to see the legend of korra whenever you find the time to bring it to the channel. Just a heads up that I think it’s generally accepted that Korras story through seasons can feel a bit more disjointed than the og avatar did and some other stuff that might be a bit negative but of course form your opinion from watching it, it’s still a great series just might not be on the same level or give the same feeling as the og avatar.

Anton

"FMAB is good, but not as good as people make it out to be, IMO. " yeah youre alone here... it was #1 on myanimelist for the longest time and probably eventually will take frierens place sooner or later. FMAB wasnt crazy with animation but tbh most of atla was pretty "normal" as well, but both of these shows shine with the plot and characters, id definitely say the villains of FMAB go a lot deeper than ozai, or even as much as i love her character, azula (then again shes not supposed to be too deep). Also note that the FMAB and ATLA ending literally mirror each other, in ATLA aang takes the firelords power to save the world, in FMAB edward gives away his own power to save his brother... but yeah either way as i said before i think both are masterpieces but i personally prefer ATLA as well because of the lore and setting

L S

What really happened to Zuko’s mom is only explained in the comics that continues the story of Aang and his friends right after where the series ended, to be more correct it’s “The Search” comic, it’s a great story that you will understand more about Zuko but even more about Azula and how she feels about her mother, you guys should read it

Gustavo Moraes

Really glad y'all watched this, and idk if you know about it, maybe it was mentioned at some point, but there is supposed to be a animated film following the Gaang as adults coming out in the next couple of years, so look forward to that!!

JadonTheEternal

Most reactors seem to just hate Azula completely and im SO happy y'all actually spoke about her i could cry lol. The entire show is amazing but Azula and Zuko really make it in my opinion.

David H

The end :(

Hisoka

you guys continue to amaze me with your take on this show. Most completely reactors and commenters disregard the old avatars advice and tell Aang to just be "him" and not kill. but point in fact, actually, none of the avatars told Aang to kill Ozai. -Roku said be decisive(make a choice and stick with it) -Kyoshi said only justice brings peace -Kuruk you must be active in the world (don't kick this decision down the road, you have to make the choice no one else can make it for you) -Yengchen Sacrifice you needs to protect the world(don't take a choice off the table just because it makes you uncomfortable) it's Kyoshi I want to flush out...the ATLA universe is of a certain time period...the world is flung into global conflict. Honor and duty are extremely emphasized in most of the nations. Aang doesn't want to kill nor really if he could avoid Ozai he would...So how do you end global conflict? If Iroh killed Ozai and either took the throne or passed it to Zuko, the world would have a foul taste in their mouth. War would be over, but bitter anger and animosity towards fire benders would rise. other firebending generals or leaders might cause smaller mutines feeling they've been cheated. To have a "referee" (avatar) end the conflict will show the world the referee stepped in and stopped the conflict....it brings the temperature down....."only justice brings peace." Justice isn't revenge. therefore, only the avatar could end the war and have it be perceived as justice.

Nate Terry

Love to see you guys enjoying it as much as I did. They actually did name drop lion turtles in the library episode iirc

Daniel Gavilondo

Firelord Ozai destroyed both of his kids. Zuko was able to break free if his fathers disgusting abuse because of Iroh. Azula is his biggest victim. He destroyed her. I hate her for what she has dine but feel so sorry for her at the same time. Aang should have killed the prick.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Glad to have re-lived this series again with you guys! If you're really interested what happened to Zuko's Mom, this is revealed in a canon comic series called "The Search."

CovertEye

I think HxH 2011 and ATLA are the only "completed" shows I've seen yet that stuck the landing perfectly or almost perfectly.

JN

Yeah I liked Season 2 better as well. I was actually surprised it seemed the majority liked Season 3 better. But then I rewatched S3 with C&A and realize it's a close battle.

JN

I voiced a while back my hot take that ATLA is what FMAB fans think FMAB is. FMAB is good, but not as good as people make it out to be, IMO. But apparently that's a hot take. ATLA though? Masterpiece 1000%.

JN

Unfortunately alot of the post story stuff(Zukos Mom) is addressed in the comics. They were alright IMO but not great. The Search is the comic series that goes over the Zuko mom stuff. As for Korra, can't wait. I think you'll really enjoy seasons 1 and 3

Amit

Great pick up, Ange, wow. I NEVER noticed Sokka guiding Toph back in the right direction when they went on top of the airship. lmao, when Ange said that turtle thing back during the swamp episode, that made me VERY much anticipate this episode reaction when Ange's turtle prediction comes true! LOL --- It's been a great journey re-watching with you two. Korra's a good show, but definitely not in the same league as ATLA, unfortunately. But it's most definitely a must-watch for fans of ATLA, IMO. But like some others suggested, maybe let ATLA marinate in your minds for a bit before watching Korra. Maybe check out the books too, if you want more Avatar lore.

JN

Isn't the writing and storytelling just so incredible? I kind of took it for granted almost 10 years ago when I first saw it, but something of ATLA's caliber really isn't common. And I definitely appreciate all the details that went into the show more now that I'm older. Of the shows I've watched, Vinland Saga, ATLA, AoT, Violet Evergarden, HxH, Frieren, would top my list. Honourable mentions to Mob Psycho, Code Geass, Death Note, Hajime no Ippo, Odd Taxi. They aren't quite on the level as the above, but come damn close IMO. Would be very keen to see you two react to those missing entries eventually, I do think y'all would definitely enjoy yourselves.

JN

carlie's tears during the agni kai is the right expression to have

jemmy

OMg Katara never once liked Aang throughout the whole of books 1 to 3? Only until the last scene? Come onnn now😂 We're forgetting how she was getting jealous in that cave/danced with Aang in book 2? How she always used to blush lol. I think Carlie's just blocked some intimate moments out😭 Too much was happening and she wasn't ready for all that heaviness. Its not like Katara NEVER had feelings for Aang, it was moreso a *slow burn* and build up to the last scene. Let's not forget that they were BEST FRIENDS first. Its beautiful really, and that's how a realistic friendship-to-lovers arc should be❤️ Besides, the man should love the girl more methinks😂

Dani

“Who’s your favorite character?” I hear that question come up a lot over Avatar: The Last Airbender, a show particularly near and dear to me. Iroh and Toph get tossed around a lot. Zuko is very popular. Sokka has his fans. But something I’ve noticed? Aang very rarely gets the pick. When he comes up, it’s usually in that “Oh, and also…” kind of way. Which is strange, I think, considering he’s the main character, the titular airbender, of the entire show. I never really thought much about it until a couple weeks ago when I finished my annual re-watch of the series and found myself, for the first time, specifically focused on Aang’s arc. Somehow, I never really paid that much attention to him before. I mean sure, he’s front and center in most episodes, fighting or practicing or learning big spiritual secrets, and yet, he always feels a little overshadowed. Katara takes care of the group. Sokka makes the plans. Zuko has the big, heroic Joseph Campbell journey. Aang…goofs around. He listens and follows and plays with Momo. And yes, at the end his story gets bigger and louder, but even then I feel like a lot of it dodges the spotlight. And here’s why Avatar casts the least traditionally-masculine hero you could possibly write as the star of a fantasy war story. Because of that, we don’t see Aang naturally for everything he is, so we look elsewhere. To show what I mean, I want to talk about some of the show’s other characters, and I want to start with Zuko. Zuko is the hero we’re looking for. He’s tall and hot and complicated. He perseveres in the face of constant setbacks. He uses two swords and shoots fire out of his hands. He trains with a wise old man on ship decks and mountaintops. Occasionally he yells at the sky. He’s got the whole 180-degree moral turn beat for beat, right down to the scars and the sins-of-the-father confrontation scene. And if you were going into battle, some epic affair with battalions of armor-clad infantry, Zuko is the man you’d want leading the charge, Aragorn style. We love Zuko. Because Zuko does what he’s supposed to do. Now let’s look at Katara. Katara doesn’t do what she’s supposed to do. She doesn’t care about your traditionally gender dynamics because she’s too busy fighting pirates and firebenders, planning military operations with the highest ranking generals in the Earth Kingdom, and dismantling the entire patriarchal structure of the Northern Water Tribe. Somewhere in her spare time she also manages to become one of the greatest waterbenders in the world, train the Avatar, defeat the princess of the Fire Nation in the middle of Sozin’s Comet and take care of the entire rest of the cast for an entire year living in tents and caves. Katara is a badass, and we love that. So what about Aang? When we meet Aang, he is twelve years old. He is small and his voice hasn’t changed yet. His hobbies include dancing, baking and braiding necklaces with pink flowers. He loves animals. He doesn’t eat meat. He despises violence and spends nine tenths of every fight ducking and dodging. His only “weapon” is a blunt staff, used more for recreation than combat. Through the show, Aang receives most of his training from two young women – Katara and Toph – whom he gives absolute respect, even to the point of reverence. When he questions their instruction, it comes from a place of discomfort or anxiety, never superiority. He defers to women, young women, in matters of strategy and combat. Then he makes a joke at his own expense and goes off to feed his pet lemur. Now there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for all this, and it’s the one that shielded Aang from the heroic limelight in my eyes for ten years. The reasoning goes like this: Aang is a child. He has no presumptuous authority complex, no masculinity anxiety, no self-consciousness about his preferred pastimes, because he’s twelve. He’s still the hero, but he’s the prepubescent hero, the hero who can’t lead the charge himself because he’s just not old enough. The problem is, that reasoning just doesn’t hold up when you look at him in the context of the rest of the show. Let’s look at Azula. Aside from the Avatar himself, Zuko’s sister is arguably the strongest bender in the entire show. We could debate Toph and Ozai all day, but when you look at all Azula does, the evidence is pretty damning. Let’s make a list, shall we? Azula completely mastered lightning, the highest level firebending technique, in her spare time on a boat, under the instruction of two old women who can’t even bend. Azula led the drill assault on Ba Sing Sae, one of the most important Fire Nation operations of the entire war, and almost succeeded in conquering the whole Earth Kingdom Azula then bested the Kyoshi Warriors, one of the strongest non-bender fighting groups in the entire world, successfully infiltrated the Earth Kingdom in disguise, befriended its monarch, learned of the enemy’s most secret operation, emotionally manipulated her older brother, overthrew the captain of the secret police and did conquer the Earth Kingdom, something three Fire Lords, numerous technological monstrosities, and countless generals, including her uncle, failed to do in a century. And she did this all when she was fourteen That last part is easy to forget. Azula seems so much her brother’s peer, we forget she’s the same age as Katara. And that means that when we first meet Azula, she’s only a year older than Aang is at the end of the series. So to dismiss Aang’s autonomy, maturity or capability because of his age is ridiculous, understanding that he and Azula could have been in the same preschool class. We must then accept Aang for what he truly is: the hero of the story, the leader of the charge, who repeatedly displays restraint and meekness, not because of his age, not because of his upbringing, not because of some character flaw, but because he chooses too. We clamor for strong female characters, and for excellent reason. But nobody every calls for more weak male characters. Not weak in a negative sense, but weak in a sense that he listens when heroes talk. He negotiates when heroes fight. And when heroes are sharpening their blades, planning their strategies and stringing along their hetero love interests, Aang is making jewelry, feeding Appa, and wearing that flower crown he got from a travelling band of hippies. If all Aang’s hobbies and habits were transposed onto Toph or Katara, we’d see it as a weakening of their characters. But with Aang it’s cute, because he’s a child. Only it isn’t, because he’s not. Even in his relationship with Katara, a landmark piece of any traditional protagonist’s identity, Aang defies expectations. From the moment he wakes up in episode one, he is infatuated with the young woman who would become his oldest teacher and closest friend. Throughout season one we see many examples of his puppy love expressing itself, usually to no avail. But there’s one episode in particular that I always thought a little odd, and that’s Jet. In Jet, Katara has an infatuation of her own. The titular vigilante outlaw sweeps her off her feet, literally, with his stunning hair, his masterful swordsmanship and his apparent selflessness. You’d think this would elicit some kind of jealousy from Aang. There’s no way he’s ignorant of what’s happening, as Sokka sarcastically refers to Jet as Katara’s boyfriend directly in Aang’s presence, and she doesn’t even dispute it. But even then, we never see any kind of rivalry manifest in Aang. Rather, he seems in full support of it. He repeatedly praises Jet, impressed by his leadership and carefree attitude. Despite his overwhelming affection for Katara, he evaluates both her and Jet on their own merits as people. There is no sense of ownership or macho competition. Contrast this with Zuko’s reaction to a similar scenario in season three’s The Beach. Zuko goes to a party with his girlfriend, and at that party he sees her talking to another guy. His reaction? Throwing the challenger into the wall, shattering a vase, yelling at Mai, and storming out. This may seem a little extreme, but it’s also what we’d expect to an extent. Zuko is being challenged. He feels threatened in his station as a man, and he responds physically, asserting his strength and dominance as best he can. I could go on and on. I could talk about how the first time Aang trains with a dedicated waterbending master, he tries to quit because of sexist double standards, only changing his mind after Katara’s urging. I could talk about how Aang is cast as a woman in the Fire Nation’s propaganda theatre piece bashing him and his friends. Because in a patriarchal society, the worst thing a man can be is feminine. I could talk about the only times Aang causes any kind of real destruction in the Avatar state, it’s not even him, since he doesn’t gain control of the skill until the show’s closing moments. Every time he is powerless in his own power and guilt-ridden right after, until the very end when he finally gains control, and what does he do with all that potential? He raises the rivers, and puts the fires out. Aang isn’t what he’s supposed to be. He rejects every masculine expectation placed on his role, and in doing so he dodges center stage of his own show. It’s shocking to think about how many times I just forgot about Aang. Even at the end, when his voice has dropped and his abs have filled in, we miss it. Zuko’s coronation comes and we cheer with the crowd, psyched to see our hero crowned. Then the Fire Lord shakes his head, gestures behind him and declares “the real hero is the Avatar.” It’s like he’s talking to us. “Don’t you get it?” he asks. “Did you miss it? This is his story. But you forgot that. Because he was small. And silly. And he hated fighting. And he loved to dance. Look at him,” Zuko seems to say. “He’s your hero. Avatar Aang, defier of gender norms, champion of self-identity, feminist icon.”

Oh hey, as I sit down to watch this finale I didn't even realize I'm wearing my ATLA shirt lmao. Easily my most watched show of all time, prob have seen it all the way through 20+ times now

Hunter Snider

Take your time with Korra, I think it does Korra a disservice to watch the shows back to back. Allowing time to sit with ATLA, and enjoy it for what it is, will honestly enrich your experience with Korra.

Matt Even

KORRA LET'S GOO 🗣🗣🗣

Edmon

Would really love to see you react to Korra! And just want to say I appreciate your content so much, and this was truly a pleasure to watch again with ya'll. Things have been a little shit lately, but you guys are a bright spot i look forward to every day. Much love.

Kolton Nay

Nah I respect them for how nice they were to Azula the last episodes. Cause tbf I only felt bad cause she clearly needs proffessional help...but I was too busy gagging at how she went completely bonkers😂 like omggg. Its sad and complex because she's not just 'evil' or 'mean', but truly insane.

Dani

Toph had an outing with Iroh though so that's better than Zuko

SoraNC

@ S3E19 "[Aang's] been called there, by WHO.... WHY—I'm not entirely sure just yet" As Chit-Sang would say.... "I think you mean by WHOM." 😅

JN

SO sad this is over😢 Please read The Search comic if you want more info on Zuko's mom and Azula a few years after the finale!!

kel011

A lot of lore concerning the world of Avatar + lion turtles and all that is covered in greater detail in Korra - its very interesting stuff and you'll really enjoy it!

Yara

Watching this with them is the first time I've noticed that Zuko and Aang have parallel scars, much like their stories since Season 1. Great writing.

MJAnime

It was a nice journey, cheers guys. Very satisfied with the discussions, genuinely shocked that Carlie pinpointed what she said word for word, major callback: "I want to see her break down a little bit, I want to see Azula broken" -Carlie (season 3 episode 5 - 16:10) Was that broken enough Carlie😆? Slow decline of mental health If you guys want to find out what happened to Zuko's mom, and see the resolution to Azula you need to read the manga.

Xan

Great timing. Israel "The Last Stylebender" Adesanya fights in Perth, Australia this weekend and he's a big Avatar fan. Hence the nickname. Haven't seen this show since a child so this has been great because I didn't remember much.

Evan Valenti

One of the greatest series I've watched to this day. The story telling, the world building, the character writing, even the comedy is on point. Animes/series these days have phasing issues, but this show proved that you don't have to drag out a series just to show depth, good writing and world building. Zuko is one of the best written character I've seen. His internal struggles were fleshed out throughout the series and then the resolution was beautifully executed in the finale. Thank you for reacting to this series. It made me re-live the moments when I watched ATLA for the 1st time, so nostalgic. I love your discussions every episode, and your banters lol. Also... Team Zutara all the way!!!! The Lion Turtle was actually foreshadowed in Book 2 Chapter 10: The Library, around the 13 minute mark.

Haru [春]

This will always be one of my favorite shows of all time. Also Carlie crying pretty much through the entire final 2 episodes is so real lmao

For the many questions you have about the finale, most of them may or may not be addressed in Legend of Korra.

Great reactions as always probably my new favorite of yours (although I am very biased as Avatar is incredibly important to me.) It's truly been a journey, a few quick things. Firstly, Zuko and Aang have parallel scar both from Azula's lightning respectively on their back and front in the same spot. Second, Aang had his scar pressed into the rocks behind him and it kind of shocked him into the state. Thirdly, Iroh took back the city his son died trying to take over, wrapping up his story with him not only repenting for his sin, also accomplishing what his son died trying to do although he is now capturing it for the people rather then his country. Iroh genuinely has made me a significantly better man as i'm sure many many more (and its funny rewatching it through you guys realizing how many of my actions and mentality come from a cartoon character. I will never forget him) and his scene reuniting with Zuko is one of the rare times I cry to a show every single time watching it. Every single character is done extremely well and not one is forgotten. Zuko is in my opinion the best side character in any show i've seen period. His redemption is honestly on the same tier as Thorfinn, I watched the show as it aired as a child and even back then I loved Zuko even then although it was for different reasons. That Agni Kai is one of the most beautiful scenes in cartoon history and I still imagine those blue flames vs those orange ones. Imo the best cartoon of all time and really glad you both liked it so much.

Loved these reactions, all I say is good luck when you start LoK. If you understand that the cohesive story telling of ATLA is not as good in LoK it might be better. I personally just grew to love the Gaang so much that when Korra came around the LoK characters didn't grow on me. I personally just find that with LoK they went so far off the rails it started ruining the universe for me.

AttackRunRepeat

ozai flying w his fire bending while also lightning bending is sickkkkk

Jay rellim

I’ve been fighting to get through this work week in anticipation of your reaction to the finale. Can’t wait to watch

Andrew Marusic

Sokka was was awesome in this finale.. Always taking care of Toph 🤗 Zuko and Aang have other parallels aside from Sozin and Roku, like their scars (Zuko's in front and Aang's at the back)

Alexis

Been waiting for this forever! great reaction guys! so the Lion turtle was mentioned just a few times here and there in the series. One, was when they were in Wan Shi Tong's library and was briefly reading up on them in one of the books. Two, then Sokka went to train at Piandao's place he had a few sculpture's in the room of the lion turtles and mentioned Sokka being a lion turtle.

Danny Ramirez

I enjoyed rewatching this with you 😊 thank you. Behind the scene things: Ep. 3x6 Avatar & Firelord When Zuko visited Iroh in prison and we all learned the plot twist.. https://youtu.be/VcA8xDE4pBU?si=yu53xjjF510P9Uxm

Alexis

You are right they were taught not given the power but that's just semantics I doubt many people even contemplated that distinction like myself. To me "teaching" meant "giving" cause i think back to Toph and the badger moles scene she had no bending taught by badger moles now has bending. Once again you are right but the fact so many remember it this way is why people think its a retcon.

KaladinStormLight

@ Episode 3x18 😅 I think Toph's random outburst of Katara having a secret "thing" with Haru is the creators giving a nod to the community of shippers who wanted her to be with Haru... like Carlie who initially shipped those two. Also, just pointing out that at the tavern scene in the end, Jun is fighting a Walmart Ryu, from Street Fighter.

JN

Yeah, you’re right! I watched it as it was coming out, and I remember that they hadn’t planned on going past season 1, but it did so well that it got renewed for season 2. That one didn’t do so well, so I think they switched the time slot for it, or made it a web only show? But then season 3-4 were just bangers

Danny C

it still doesnt make sense because the lion turtle said they bent NOT THE ELEMENTS but the energy within yet in SPOILERS lok they literally bend elements, but have to recieve the power from the lion turtles...

L S

demon slayer in top 5 but not fmab is criminal

L S

I think it is perfect that you will have some time between ATLA and LOK. It allows you to savour ATLA and also be excited to what LOK will bring.

Bill0g

Didn't they write each book of LoK with no knowledge of whether they would do another one? I remember reading that somewhere but I could remember wrong.

poisonivybag

Exactly! For what Korra sets out to accomplish, it does a really great job! The other thing to consider is Korra is 4 separate “storylines” that focus on Korra as a character, whereas Avatar was 3 books leading up to one big finale, so they’ll of course be very different

Danny C

with fmab this is probably my favorite show within animation, perfect from beginning to end and the final episode in particular is just a masterpiece in film making history. i prefer this over fmab but mostly because i just love the lore and the world set up in this show. so sad that its successor didnt honor that.

L S

In a lot of ways I enjoyed LOK more, but mainly due to the characters being older and having more "modern" issues like having to deal with careers, politics, adult relationships etc. It feels more relatable in some ways.

poisonivybag

I've said this as well - I think it's really hard to follow-up a show like ATLA, which is why anyone watching LOK needs to judge it as it's own thing.

poisonivybag

loved the show, loved the reactions to it. But I got to say I was so shocked when he said that Demon slayer was in his top 5 show that they have covered on the channel. It was so funny to me that I didn't really get why I just laughed out loud.

Gnidis

I'm really glad to see you guys enjoy this show so much, I really enjoyed watching your reactions to it, it's one of my favorite shows of all time and I'll take any excuse to rewatch it lol.

Moncana4

So happy you enjoyed ATLA! I only saw it as an adult and it definitely has a special place in my heart. I also love LOK and I'm really happy to hear you're bringing it to the channel at some point! My only advice is to go into it with an open mind, and with the understanding that all Avatars are different, personality wise and what they struggle with. I think if you treat it as it's own thing you'll really enjoy it.

poisonivybag

(korra spoilers) The animals were never said to have given bending to people, just that they taught bending/were the original benders. It isn't really a retcon because the iion turtles gave humans the ability to bend, not necessarily teaching them how to use it

wing-yi

Finished watching, and I'm so so happy! 🥰 Loved all of these reactions. I do agree with Ange about Book 2 being a good season as a whole. I actually love both Kaatang and Zutara and see the merit of both, so I appreciated the shipping arguments haha I'm glad Ange got what he wanted at the end. At the same time, Zutara is still valid, Carlie! This is a fictional show and we should be able to ship whoever we'd like ☺️. Thank you again for reacting to ATLA. I'm confident we all appreciate the hard work that went into this and the thorough discussions. Honestly, this has become my favourite channel because of how much effort is clearly put into your work. Have a great day! ❤️

Nellie

My fav season is still 3 but I totally get the season 2 pick. I also think season 3 has the best episodes but season 2 has the best pacing and plot in terms of suspense and continuity. It's a matter of what speaks louder to you. In my case, the individual quality of those season 3 eps does but I totally get season 2.

KaijinGarou

please add hazbin hotel or zom 100 to your poll if you are taking a break from korra. both are fun shows

Jeff

They did establish the lion turtle each season "The library" it was in a book. There are statues in "the guru" episode and the "Sokka's Master" he had some in his rock garden the opening title screen has some lion turtles (cant remember were in season 1 but either kyoshi island or avatar day) and if you think about it the animals are what gave bending to the people (minus the moon) until the retcon in Korra.

KaladinStormLight

Great reaction, you guys, it's been an amazing journey! You're my first and favorite reaction channel and this is my favorite show so I've been waiting for this for a long time and you didn't disappoint. I avoided commenting anything about Kataang in the last video because the show was about to address it xD but I agree there's been a ton of signs of affection from Katara to Aang that go beyond friendship and Carlie's been a little bit in denial about it 🤣. Still, I can see them having Katara be hesitant to drag it out and Carlie made a lot of correct predictions in the show. Ange had his fair share of them too even if we don't like to admit it because it's funnier to tease you about your theories being always wrong 🤣. That finale was perfection, the Iroh-Zuko reunion, the last Agni Kai... I'm not a big fan of the lion-turtle's timely appearance and Aang having his chakras realigned by a random hit on the right spot at the right moment but the show's so good I can spare it for a couple of conveniences and still give it a 10/10. Zuko, best character arc ever! From banished prince demanding to be treated like a king to actual king serving tea with a smile ❤. I wonder how many people in Ba Sing Se saw his coronation and said "hey, that's Lee from the tea shop". But honestly, everything else in the show deserves praise too. Thank you for your genuine and wholesome reactions to it and have a great day! ❤

KaijinGarou

Cannot tell you guys how much I’ve been looking forward to this! I’m so happy we finally got here, and so happy you guys loved the ending! 🥹 This is literally my 5th time watching the series and I still get full body chills every time. The writing is just crazy and it’s mind blowing that my favorite series as a kid turned out to be (imo) one of the best shows ever created. So satisfying 🫶🏻

Katherine Claire

As for Korra, totally fine with you guys taking your time with it. It unfortunately gets a lot of hate because it dips a little in book 2, but book 3-4 are really beautiful stories with some of the most interesting villains. My only piece of advice is to treat them as two different series, almost like GoT and HotD

Danny C

“I could vomit on screen” Ange that killed me, I had to pause the video man 😂 Beautiful reactions, glad you two enjoyed the series. To me, this and fullmetal are almost “mandatory” watches for anime fans ( even though avatar is classified as a cartoon) just because they feel the most well rounded.

Danny C

I AM MELON LORD. muahahahahah. Its good to hear that you will watch Korra. It will give you some insight into how the world moved on after this series. The question around Zukos mother was one loose end they only tied up in a comic sadly. The comic is "The Search".

Sarsen Stone

You are not going to see the story of Zuko's mom in Legend of Korra, Her story is going to be in one of the avatar Comics

Seigfred Teves

Zuko did manage to redirect Azula's lightning, you can see it going up the sky. He just did it very poorly having to do it hurriedly like that so still took damage. Hadn't he redirected it at all, he would have died.

KaijinGarou

i wanna change azula so bad

Jeff

Oh and also if you guys want to know what happened to zuko's mom it is in the avatar comic called the search and it has three parts and I highly recommend you guys read it because it is amazing and it is available on Amazon ❤️

Maya Coleman

oh no i am not ready for this

H

I can't believe it is over but I enjoyed watching this again with you guys and go on this journey every time I watch avatar I always learn some new life lessons and I hope you guys learned something new too and also I am glad you guys joined the avatar fandom😢 💔 😃

Maya Coleman

can't wait for you guys to start Korra, whenever you guys are able to/ready to <3 personally i enjoyed LoK a bit more than ATLA, but that's all up to personal taste/opinions :)

Simone

Brings me to tears everytime.

Naxxyo21

Carlie and Ange there was a mention of the lion turtle back in season 1 episode 8! It was very brief. But I get your opinion on that. When I first watched it I thought it was kind of random but I watched and read up on the finale and it was mentioned once before so lore wise it wasn’t that random I guess. But we all forgot the mention so I think that’s the point they tried to make

idk

The entire point was to show that even with all of that a truly enlightened individual can rise above. That's a greater duty than falling to the simple ways of man. Remember an eye for an eye leaves the world blind.

Terrence C

"Avatar Kyoshi, I need your wisdom" "This is a Glock 17. 9mm, short recoil, locked-breech semi-automatic. But I've got some bigger-caliber stuff in the backstore if that's more your style"

KaijinGarou

I would recommend starting korra this December/January

Terrence C

"You're right, Aang, all my wisdom is available to you" "So where are we?" "The heck if I know, kiddo" I know it's natural Roku doesn't know but those two sentences back to back still crack me up 🤣

KaijinGarou

Thank you for sharing your Avatar journey with us. I think skipping the live action series is a good choice (for multiple reasons), and I'm really happy to hear you'll be watching Korra when the time is right. As I'm sure you've been told, there are comics that take place after the Avatar finale. The comics help to further build the world and address some of the show's loose ends (I'm intentionally being vague, but some of it is stuff you've probably never even considered). I don't know if it's something you can react to (might be difficult), but I'd definitely encourage you to check them out on your own time at the very least.

Merfhew

I disagree with you here. This wasn't for only him, this was a message to the world that violence doesn't have to be the answer. While in the context of the show, it may seem a tad bit contrived, I think the message is still important. I'm not trying to argue that the Ozai dying wouldn't have it's merits, but I think that killing him doesn't solve the problem that exists. If all we do is kill the people who we see as the enemy, we will never move forward as a society. This is a message that transcends the show itself, and the show actually shares similar themes with the anime called Vinland Saga. I highly recommend watching it if you haven't.

Gabriel Barott

I get that it’s a kid’s show. But I do get tired of hearing people talk as if Aang made the best choice. Like I said, I think the ending was better as it is. But the decision itself is selfish and wrong.

Whammadoodoo

Carlie after watching 3 seasons of Avatar: "windbender" xD

Hitopopamus

[POTENTIAL LEGEND OF KORRA SPOILERS] I would see your point but considering what happens in legend of korra, the ending makes so much sense to me. I won’t go into detail because of spoilers, but adding this into the story makes a great set up for what happens in the next generation. You may think it’s a plot device or the wrong choice but not only is it a good way to write the end of aangs character in the show but it’s a great way to set up the next generation in legend of Korra. I see your point tho, I just disagree slightly

idk

Ange with the lion turtle🤣🤣 let’s go!!😭

idk

For me Zuko-Toph field trip was in the Ember Island Players episode when they had that wholesome conversation about Iroh. This doesn't count 🤣

KaijinGarou

i think its bc its a kids show they cant kill anyone.

loke_Noke

I may comment some more after watching, but thank you so much to Carlie and Ange for all of the ATLA videos this year. Made my week every time! ❤️❤️❤️

Nellie

IM SO EXCITED OMG

Moe Abd

I disagree with Aang’s choice in the end. I understand that Aang wanted to honor the memory of his people and that he has an unyielding spirit, which is the whole reason spiritbending could be an option for him in the first place. But the Avatars were right. Duty calls Aang to sacrifice his own spiritual needs for the sake of the world. There was no guarantee he could restrain a comet boosted Fire Lord to do spirit bending. When he chose not to return the lightning, he chose to risk the genocide of the earth kingdom, the death of his friends, and ensure his people died in vain, all so he could feel better and honor some dead monks. I love the ending; it’s masterfully made. For a kid’s show, the ending was correct, but the decision was objectively wrong.

Whammadoodoo

YO MY LUNCH BREAK GONNA GO INSANE

Gabriel Barott

hope you can finish it beffore its too late!.

loke_Noke

SAMEME I HAD PIZZA READY.

loke_Noke

Aang is my favourite character so everytime it gets to the finale I get frustrated thinking that the reactors are gonna be like “oh whatever just kill him get it over with” and I’m just like it’s not that easyyyyyyyyyy. You guys just keep impressing me with your reactions. My patron membership is worth every penny 🤣🙏🏾💖

idk

Im on Episode 18 and i really love both your reactions to aang not wanting to kill the fire lord. It’s so satisfying. Every other reaction I see I’m waiting for them to pick up on the fact that killing ozai goes against everything aang was taught as a monk, and the only remaining thing he has left from his culture was the monks wisdom and to go against it basically ruins the last bit of culture he had from his people. You two are so perseptive and I’m so ready to see episode 19-21 now knowing you understand that piece of aangs writing !!

idk

The fact that joke about gluebending to stop Ozai from bending was actually foreshadowing xD

KaijinGarou

I have absolutely no self control 🤣, I was just distracting myself binging something else 😂.

Charlotte PhD.

That's some self control lol mad props

Carlos Cantu

Here it is. The bittersweet feeling of finishing a series. Happy to have been in this journey again tho.

Edward Michaelle

Omg nooooo i just left my house to pick up breakfast 😩 now I have to wait like 20 minutes to see these 😭😭 oh well now the excitement will build :D

Carlos Cantu

Zuko said "no beach episode today, we already did that"

KaijinGarou

Literally same 😂 I’m setting up my breakfast so I can watch this 😂

Danny C

I was waiting for this to finally binge the entire season 3 react! My adhd couldn't handle 2-3 episodes at a time 🤣. I can't wait to watch this, I already know it's gonna be amazing!

Charlotte PhD.

This truly is one of the most satisfying finales to a show ive ever seen. Still hits as hard today as it did all those years ago 🥹

Daniel Molina

seriously lol i've been refreshing the whole day on my end, my subscription expires in a few hours and i can't renew unfortunately, thought i was gonna miss these uploads 😂😭

Simone

"I was never angry with you I was sad because I was afraid you lost your way" 😢❤️

Maya Coleman

You guys are some mad lads ❤️
