Agreed wholeheartedly. I hate all the romance with the exception of Zuko and Mai. I am not a person who normally cares about romance at all, but when done right, I give credit. Zuko and Mai is an example of pretty good romance. While starting off rocky and pretty awkward, it's got good traction by the end of the show (however, I think that Book 3 fumbled that a bit). I think the show is near perfect. There are only two issues I have with the show: horrible romances (the writers can't write romance for crap, just look at Korra), and bad pacing with certain characters' bending powers and skills in general (Katara being called a master when she could barely bend water at the beginning of the show + Suki having ninja abilities all of a sudden and performing impossible parkour out of nowhere). That's why I always think Book 2 is the best. It was the best of all worlds.

I think you guys are both pretty much right about the ships. Like from a pure narrative/writing standpoint it's very clear that the show is setting up Kataang. From basically as early as aunt Wu predicting that Katara would marry a powerfull bender, to the erath kingdom general that tried to force it, to the chakras talk with Pathik and to the dancing. Like Aang was willing to give up the Avatar state for Katara. But I do see what Carile is saying, and perhaps the writers should have done a better job at adding more scenes where Katara is noticably on board for Aang, because right now what she said to him after the play is basically a very polite no. And I don't think Zutara is such a bad ship at all. Like if you look at the script with a writers eye, they are not setting up such a romance at all, but in Zuko and Katara they've written two charcters that could work very well if the took that direction. I think that is what we're noticing.

Can I be honest... ATLA is my favorite show but I pretty much hate all the romances across the board lol. Kataang is weak, Zutara is cringe and even worse.. Mai x Zuko is... fine... Sokka x Suki is... fine... None are particularly good tho lol.

I also would've liked more hints of romantic interest from Katara, but there were a few for sure. The biggest being the Headband episode when she was jealous of the other girl and wanted to dance with Aang. This show does so many things great, but the only ship I really cared for was Sokka and Suki.

Aang's crush is one sided throughout the show. Katara only had a couple times that she demonstrated anything that could be interpreted as interest and they are highly situational. Granted the whole "romance" aspect is the worst part of the show. Especially considering Aang is 11. He is too young to understand love properly.
