I get the ship thing. It's pointless to deny that Kataang has been set up since the beginning, but I understand why people don't like it. Katara is in her teens while Aang is still twelve, and Zuko just happens to be the only other relevant male teen in the show, so people just slot him into being Katara's other ship because they don't like Kataang.

I legit don't get Zutara. People say there is "chemistry" but they literally don't have a single moment until the cave in Ba Sing Se. And even then, that was just a moment of greif bonding, no romance in sight imo. I personally think people just see two conventionally attractive (male and female *eye roll*) characters and decide to ship them. (And that because Aang has the goofy kid archetype, they refuse to acknowledge that Katara and Aang have a deep connection.) Katara and Zuko? Their lives, circumstances and personalities, none of them fit for me. Also, Carlie, you talk about "Katara not acting like she has a crush" like she did with Jet. (Which she has ALSO NEVER HAD WITH ZUKO) But a schoolgirl crush is not always how feelings present. I am someone who had a crush here and there, but I ended up with a really good friend in the end. It just felt so natural and we were so comfortable and we make eachother happy every day because we share that bond. We learned to love eachother deeply as people, before introducing romantic feelings. I trust him completely and wouldn't give him up for the world. To me, that is the kind of relationship I love to see in media. Not some slap-dash, "throw those two together because they shared a moment of eye contact" kind of relationships.

I agree with ange that it's been set up since season 1, but that doesn't mean it's good. I know there's only a 2 year difference (or 100 if you wanna get technical), but the difference in maturity from age 12 to 14 is quite noticable. I can see that Katara cares for Aang, but I've never thought of them as a couple, and it feels very one sided. The romance between them is probably the only flaw in the show for me personally.

I mean if we being honest the unsure aspect to her romance towards Aang was literally just a plot device to prolong the eventual relationship till the end of the series. And they did kiss in the cave of two lovers(confirmed by the co creators) which was a moment lead by Katara herself. I can understand wanting the Zuko and Katara route but I don't think the "unsure" nature of Katara throughout the series is a good example. I think the series and the writing made it clear that this was just a way to kind of avoid and hold off on that romance till the end of the series

I’m on Team Carlie! As much setup as the show has done for Kataang, it’s very much one-sided and feels a bit forced. It’s giving infatuation from a boy to his babysitter, Aang has always crushed on Katara and she never saw him romantically until the fortune teller episode. WHICH BTW the “powerful bender” prediction could very well apply to Zuko! But since that ep, anytime Katara and Aang had a somewhat romantic scene Katara always came off a bit unsure like she was trying to convince herself that this is something she wanted. But if you have to convince yourself you like someone and you’re saying you are confused, hate to break it to you but it’s just not meant to be 🤷🏻‍♀️ if you like someone you’d do something about it ESPECIALLY in the midst of a war when anyone could potentially die! She’s using the war as an excuse to prolong what she knows she needs to do which is tell Aang how she really feels…guess we’ll see what she ends up doing in the next few eps

So a couple of fun facts about the ember island players episode. The voice actor for the zuko actor is Derek Basco, Dante Bascos brother who voices actual zuko. The voice actor for the actor yue is voiced by the same actress as suki. Aangs earth bending teacher was originally supposed to be a huge jacked guy so they poked fun at that in this episode. Same with Aangs character, he was supposed to be this hyper, super energetic prankster. And they had actor Zuko with the scar on the wrong side to poke fun at themselves because in the “fire bending masters” episode there’s a scene where zukos scar is on the wrong side

What I enjoy about the Southern Raiders episode is that the director did something I really like which is telling a story in different perspectives. not just 2 which is usually done, but in 3! Sokka's perspective, Katara's perspective, and Kya's(their mom) perspective. Aang usually isn't my favorite character in the show(he's kinda typical hero character) but I liked Aang very much in the last half of this series. talking about forgiveness is very important lesson. I've always looked at forgiveness as not being for the other person's benefit, but for your benefit. you don't "forgive" the other guy so THEY can feel better. You forgive the other guy so YOU can feel better. It isn't healthy to hold grudges, or to be bitter. Forgiveness lets you remove that mental and emotional burden from plaguing your thoughts. I think that Katara really didn't get that lesson. Just something interesting to think about.

The showrunners just made fun of all these ridiculous theories discussed in the community during the previous two seasons. I was SUPER against Carlie's side until she argued how Suki and Sokka are together despite there being a war, because they TRULY want to be together. No hesitation there. That gave me pause. Made me consider how in real life, Carlie is on to something. A girl/woman who truly likes and wants to be with someone wouldn't be so wishy-washy and unsure if there's someone she truly likes and wants to be with... except in cases where she's very very insecure and very shy and cautious as a person... where she hasn't really worked out how she feels. But IRL when those instances happen where the woman truly likes someone but is very hesitant, she would regret it later on if the man moves on from her thinking he was rejected. It's a lot of work or luck at that point to build back the trust after making the man feel like his feelings were unreciprocated. ...I definitely have personal experience with this.

To be fair, a 12 & 14 year old relationship is weirder than a 14 & 16 year old, just because 12 year olds are vastly different in maturity than people 14-15+. Kataang is basically a 7th grader dating a freshman (first year) in high school, which is way weirder than a freshman in highschool dating a sophomore in highschool.

What I love about the Southern Raiders episode is that Katara doesn't forgive Yon Rah like most cartoons at the time probably would have made her do. It shows that sometimes people really don't deserve forgiveness and the best option is to move on so that you can heal.

It's okay, Carlie, I'd rather Zutara than the other options, too. And I stand by that to this day. Kataang is fine, but a lot of the story was from Aang's perspective and we didn't get a natural progression of Katara's feelings. (she def wanted it, and was flustered. even was mad that Aang was accidently rude about it) - Aang kissing her right before The Day of Black Sun. I like to think of Katara's choice not to kill Yon Ra as a rejection of Hama's philosophy. When Hama first describes bloodbending, she talks about how she eventually came to view the rats she practiced on as nothing more than sacks of liquid. I think this is why the series treats bloodbending as such a corrupting power: to properly utilize it, you need to, at least temporarily, view the victim as a vessel filled with water, rather than as an actual person. It's fundamentally dehumanizing. And this is how Hama treated her victims! She didn't target anyone in particular. She didn't view her victims as individual people. She just saw them as Fire Nation, and therefore all equally worthy of the hatred she felt for the soldiers who first captured her. Incidentally, this is how Katara felt about Zuko at the beginning of the episode. She felt betrayed by him, yes, but like Sokka said, she also blurred the line between his actions and the actions of the Southern Raiders. They're all Fire Nation, after all. Similarly, when Katara encounters the current leader of the Southern Raiders, she doesn't even check that it's the right guy before bloodbending him. She sees that he's in the right military position and wearing the right armor, and that enrages her enough that she doesn't hesitate at all to use bloodbending. He's not really a person to her in that moment, just a target that she's after. An obstacle. When she spares Yon Ra, it's not because she forgives him. She says it herself, she'll never forgive him. However, she's seen enough to internalize that he's just... a person. He's sad, empty, and pathetic, but still fundamentally human. She sees him for what he truly is, and that's enough for her to get closure. There's nothing to be gained from killing him. This is the difference between her and Hama. Both hate the Fire Nation for what it's done, but Katara still sees them as individual people, and knows that being driven by revenge won't actually solve anything. I really like this episode.

episode 16 is my favorite of the whole show, and not only because of Zutara lol. just so good, and Katara is so badass and a very well written, deep character. btw I love the little smile Carlie has every time there are signs of Zutara on screen hahah. I personally don't mind either ship for Katara, but Zuko kind of lets her explore her darker side, maybe be more herself, like we saw in this episode. and I really don't like MaiZuko so that's why I lean more towards Zutara.

So great to watch your reactions as always! Since the show ran from 2005-2008, the internet was pretty young, but there were still message boards about the show. The show runners have talked about how they didn’t let the boards influence their writing, but they were aware of them. They used this episode to not only recap the show, but make references to fan discussions aka the line “Oh no, another fan with ideas,” (clearly a joke said with love 🤣). The Zutara ship is an obvious one, but the gaang deciding to skip the great divide was a nod to the fact that a lot of fans thought of it as a filler episode lol. They were also aware that fans were confused about whether Jett actually died or not, so they referenced that here as well (the creators have confirmed that he did die, but they were limited on what they could show on Nickelodeon). Also, Toph’s character was originally a man, but they decided to change it, so that’s why they made her a man in the play 🤣

Also i STRONGLYYY disagree with carlie, sorryyyyy. Kataang is written so evidently throughout the show😭 kataang vs suki and sokka are quite different. Considering katara and aang have bigger roles to play in the war. Katara probably feels overwhelmed at the thouht if being in an actual relationship right before aang fights the fire lord. She obviously has faith in him but if he fails, that’s going to be a huge thing and I don’t think she can commit to a relationship with a guy that has a 50/50 chance of dying within the next week is something for her. This is all my opinion but it’s why I think she wanted to hold off on things and was confused and battling her feelings for aang to try and remain stronger for this final fight. Zutara have zero chemistry whats so ever in my opinion, they barely have scenes compared to kataang that show slight interest, zuko has a whole girlfriend, and katara has aang.I never really understood the ship so maybe this is bias on my end, but kataang all the way

Never resonated with me. Ron Yha clearly did it out of pure evil joy and there's no way the Fire Nation would be as worried about a sole bloodbender who's being kidnapping random civilians in a random village. Look how much they cared they never caught her for decades until the Gaang arrived. And why would they? That's an extremely rare ability that can be used just once or twice a month. It really isn't very powerful in the grand scheme of things. They were clearly just searching for the next Avatar in case the last airbender didn't survive. What's more, they have held waterbenders captive after that. Katara several times, no further. Doesn't hold up.

There is a popular theory going around in the ATLA community. The southern raiders did not take Kya (Katara's mom) as a prisoner because of what happened to Hama (the other blood bender). They are afraid that the remaining water bender from the southern water tribe is / will be another blood bender. If you look at the timeline, this is plausible.
