the yamada clan are supposed to be the elite of the elite and nobody should be stronger than them in theory. however that is not entirely true as we see in episode 3. there are multiple reasons why they did things this way though i won't say it's completely foolproof but I attribute it to the arrogance of the shogunate which is a real thing.

2024-08-01 13:32:45 +0000 UTCShogun or people in power don't make most rational decisions very often. They can be whimsical and selfish, like that head guy wanting to have fun seeing criminals kill each other. People have been disappearing in search of that island. Too many government people have already been lost so now they are outsourcing help from Yamada clan and criminals. Because finding elixer mission is dangerous, they sent Yamada in pretext of "supervision". Yamada clan aren't ordered to search for Elixir, only criminals are. If something dangerous needs to be done on Island to reach the elixer, not Yamada's problem. It's the criminal's problem to risk their life for elixir. If criminals die on mission, Yamada simply return back. They "only" have to make sure the criminal doesn't escape. Maybe that way govt has to pay less to Yamada clan cuz they are not responsible for elixer, only for the criminal, which is their regular job. This is govt's "clever" plan in their head. Maybe it's for fun and not to save costs. Wanting to have criminals compete on the Island to get elixer in hopes for a pardon. Maybe they wanted to weaken the Yamada clan by sending them to the Island with criminals. Yamada are Ronin (masterless swordsmen). This one is another person's theory down in comments. I don't really know but once I saw that govt is outsourcing and is whimsical, this yamada+criminal mission isn't far fetched. It's like sending Yamada on Island with criminals as shields to do dirty work. May I repeat that govt can be dumb too.

2024-07-29 15:59:30 +0000 UTCHonestly my biggest problem with the show so far is that to me sending the Yamada with the prisoners to get the immortality thing don’t make any sense to me. The reason they send death row inmates is because the high likelyhood that they will die looking for it but if they were gonna send the Yamada with them either way why not just send the Yamada without prisoners to look after (or vice versa)? A better reason for it might be revealed later on I guess or I’m just missing something which is possible as well but it definetly have been bugging me haha

2024-07-28 10:13:28 +0000 UTCChobei's (blond brother) VA isn't Bakugo, although they sound similar. It's actually Bokuto from Haikyuu. Deku's VA made an appearance though! He's Yamada Asaemon Santa, the one in glasses assigned to Yuzuriha (female shinobi).

2024-07-28 07:38:33 +0000 UTCMost of the prisoners are extreme criminals (serial killers, mass murder, arson, etc.) so some of them just can't help themselves from killing their guards or they just want to go on a killing spree now that they're "free" on the island. The really big guy will be explained later. Gabimaru felt that Sagiri was holding him back and that he'd be more efficient without her. He also panicked a little when he found out they might send shinobi from his village if they didn't bring the elixir back quick enough and he absolutely didn't want to run into them which ultimately prompts him to attacking Sagiri. In Gabimaru's case he was going to take the gamble that he'd be able to find the elixir quicker without Sager and because he came back with it they'd be happier to have the elixir than to have Sagiri back. There's also nothing stopping the prisoners from taking it themselves which then eliminates the threat of them being killed.

2024-07-28 07:13:39 +0000 UTCI'm also watching this for the first time and my guess is that the prisoners who are killing their own guards, are confident that when they get the elixir of life, they can just use it on themselves and escape from the shogunate, and they can basically not be executed because of their new found immortality.

2024-07-28 06:14:46 +0000 UTCDidn't they say in episode 2 that if the guard dies then the prisoner can't be pardoned? I'm watching this with you so not familiar with the show. If that's true I don't get why the prisoners are killing the guards? This anime confuses me lol. I enjoyed your reactions, thanks for sharing.

2024-07-28 00:23:25 +0000 UTCOne theory I've seen regarding why the higher-ups sent the Yamada executioners with the criminals, is that maybe it's a ploy to weaken the Yamada clan (like maybe they're gaining too much influence from their reputation, and this can help keep their numbers down and stop any potential of them rivaling the Shogunate/higher-ups), and/or to have a say in who becomes the next Yamada Clan leader (if it's true that this mission does impact who will be the next leader). I think it's a cool theory, and haven't learned enough about this world to completely disregard or buy into it!

2024-07-27 22:12:00 +0000 UTCYeah, survival on an island with monsters definitely reminds me of Solo Levelling, looking back now. Though I did already see Hell's Paradise before SL.

2024-07-27 21:53:08 +0000 UTCIt's a bit confusing to those not as familiar with Japanese history and culture, but shinobi = ninja. Shinobi means 'one who sneaks/conceals'. The executioners are samurai, who at this point in time are basically government dogs. Gabimaru and Yuzuriha are ninja, and Gabimaru comes from the Village Hidden by Rocks (Iwagakure). It seems to be a trope in manga/anime to name ninja villages in this way (Village Hidden by/in X), as you may eventually see if you watch Naruto. Kunoichi = female ninja. I don't know if this is historical or just a trope to Japanese manga/anime/video games, but kunoichi are typically skilled in seduction in order to get close to their targets.

2024-07-27 21:51:23 +0000 UTCA lot of the voice actors are going to be very familiar to you two, if you pay attention. Especially in the latest episode you've seen. The younger brother of the criminal has a pretty funny trivia I just realized. His voice actor voiced Floch, Canute... and Yuri. He went from having a massive older sister complex in one show (NEE-SAN, NEE-SAN!!) , to now having an older brother complex (NII-SAN, NII-SAN!!!) in another 🤣 The Samurai with the eyepatch who died, was voiced by Saitama/President Shirogane's VA. I actually read his character as more being the protective older brother protecting Sagiri from the horrible trauma and fate of the executioner life... much like Reiner to Gabi/Falco in AoT. I didn't really see it as being patronizing and sexist. The above 2 are just some of the familiar voices you've already heard :). The rest I'm curious if you'll hear for yourself.

2024-07-27 21:36:34 +0000 UTCIn my opinion the reason they send a samurai with each prisoner because if they didn't who's to say the prisoner even goes to the island not to mention if they actually do go to the island what's to stop the prisoner from just drinking the elixir for himself. And then coming back and killing everyone. Only sent 1 because like you saw these are some dangerous guys so you'd hope that if they do die it essentially dooms the prisoner. But yeah not the most thought out of plans.

2024-07-27 19:59:16 +0000 UTCHey does anyone know why I can't hear audio on Streamable? I got the correct password and everything, its just muted for some reason (I ain't mute it, Streamable ain't muted, WTF?)

2024-07-27 19:57:47 +0000 UTC"Aww that's nice.. NOW BIND YOUR HANDS" lmao you guys are killing me 💀. Agree it's sh*tty of the Shogunate (higher ups) to send the Samurai on a 1 to 1 ratio with strong prisoners, but at the end Ange is right, they just don't care and they think the samurai are elite enough. Gabimaru not falling for Yuzuriha's ways 🤣 (much stronger than me) plus I guess he is familiar with her tactics since they're both ninjas

2024-07-27 19:48:01 +0000 UTCWhen Gabimaru saved Sagiri, he was following his emotions in auto pilot there. Ninja= shinobi clan Samurai= Yamada clan Both are I guess up for hire by government. This mission is literally Suicide Squad of DC comics, where criminals are put to use. And even tho this island expedition is a bad idea, shogunate doesn't care that much. We saw how whimsical people in power can be before. In previous ones, a head guy wanted to see a blood bath battle so he made the criminals fight for amusement!
