Just for your information, the databook you referenced is not official. People call it official but it's neither written by Togashi, nor approved by him. It was written by other people, and it just has his name to give him credit since he's the author of the story. The same databook has other wrong information about other characters, like the age of Zeno's grandfather, so it is extremely unreliable. I'm not saying that what you're saying is not valid, all I'm saying is that there are many theories even among Japanese viewers. It could be similar to the Kakin thing in the manga, this is how I looked at it based on the evidence points which I wrote above. It is up for interpretation. I think my points are valid too, but because nothing is cast on stone, I cannot say it is true 100% until Togashi says so, and he won't XD.

Not that the databook is necessary, her being trans is clear intended subtext. You can pretend that her family just calls her a guy for unexplained reasons or pure speculation, but when you have a group of negatively portrayed people dehumanizing and misgendering someone and the positively portrayed character humanizing and affirming their identity, you have an empathetic trans story. You literally have to ignore evidence to see it any other way, even with official confirmation of her sex people still deny it, people will grasp at anything to avoid accepting the existence of trans people in media they like.

2024-06-17 03:36:37 +0000 UTCIt is never confirmed that she’s transgender. But here’s the thing. Much like other androgynous characters in anime. The viewer or the reader (if you read the manga) can interpret them as they see fit unless it’s confirmed their gender. Astolfo is an androgynous character but it’s later confirmed to be a man. Hange Zoe from AOT is “genderless” because Isayama wanted the readers to imagine her/his gender as they see fit. The anime in the other hand though she’s confirmed to be a woman. You can see Alluka as trans that’s fine but it’s not ok that you give that as a fact which isn’t. So yeah Alluka’s real gender is up to the viewer to interpret her biological sex. Personally I think she’s a biological girl whose family won’t give a fuck about her and that Kilua only knows that truth.

2024-06-16 17:42:26 +0000 UTCI wanted to point this out because I recently discovered this but keep forgetting about it myself. If you want to watch anime a lot smoother (and most other visual media), then set your display's refresh rate to 24 Hz, if possible. Most things are produced and mastered in 24 FPS, but most displays are set at 60 Hz (50 Hz in the UK). Because 24 FPS does not fit evenly into 60, there will be a lot of repeated frames, and you see some judder as a result. It's not a big deal to have, ultimately, but when you've seen the difference in the fluidity of the animation, you'll be floored at the smooth playback you've been missing out on. Scenes that used to not stand out, now do, because the animation is so smooth... the way the animators intended. Fight scenes get enhanced, or just whenever anything is moving on screen. HxH's current ED is an example of how the clouds just moving are breathtakingly smooth. The problem is remembering to change to it and back when watching or no longer watching. If your display's refresh rate is a whole multiple of 24 though, you don't have to change its refresh rate. I.e. 120 Hz, 144 Hz, 240 Hz. ___ PS: I just tested this with Demon Slayer S4, and holy crap the animations are smooth as butter... no, silk.

I know for the overwhelming majority of episodes, the pre-OP scenes are just recaps you've already seen in the previous episodes... but some episodes, like this one, actually start the story from there. I think I only saw you two react to it maybe once or twice. Ep 139 had a pretty important pre-OP scene there.

Meanwhile, as explained in the Zoldyck family chart thing, Silva and Zeno doesn't wanna get rid of Alluka, they seek to control her power.

However, I think this is because as a Zoldyck child, regardless of your gender, you are referred to as a male because Zoldycks are expected to be dominant as assassins, so being a female is not entertained. This could be the reason why they refer to Alluka as a male, even the butlers, as they follow the family rules... [MINOR SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE MANGA]: Similarly, in the manga, all the heirs to the Kakin throne are referred to as "Prince" even though some of them are girls. Male dominance is not uncommon in traditional Japanese stories, especially in such prestigious families like the Zoldycks. Now, one might argue that if this is the case, why would Killua introduce her to Morel as a younger brother? If Alluka is a girl then he should've said sister, not brother. However, I believe that this was because he was referring to Something. Killua does not only see Alluka as his younger sister, but he also sees Something as his younger brother, and loves him too, which is made clear in later episodes. Having said that, I don't have any proof, this is just my understanding, and some of the theories I read in Japanese articles online about Alluka. No one seems to know for sure. Togashi does that on purpose to stimulate discussions. I bet he's hiding somewhere as a Patreon member and laughing as he reads our comments 😂.

2024-06-16 03:48:22 +0000 UTCYeah not quite, the family refer to her as bocchan/bocchama which is a male gendered title meaning young master before they even know "something" exists. It's really not that deep, Alluka is just a transgender girl and her family doesn't acknowledge her identity cause they don't see her as human (her entire story and arc here is literally an allegory for that exact trans experience). Togashi has a history of putting trans characters in his work: YYH, and Level E before Hunter x Hunter, it's not surprising to see him explore themes he has an interest in again.

By the way, I don't have any solid proof or anything, but the way I used to look at it while I was watching the show, is that Alluka is actually a girl, and "something" is an unknown entity referred to as male. Now, for the zoldycks (except Killua), they don't even see or admit that Alluka the human is even there. For them, Alluka is "Something" and it needs to be either destroyed or controlled. There is no girl/sister in their eyes. That's why they always say "He". Killua on the other hand clearly distinguishes between the two as separate entities, and refers to Alluka as a girl (as he told Gotou that he needs to take Canary with them because Alluka needs a girl's company), but then introduced "Something" to Morel as his little brother, not sister (when Morel said "Your older brother is trying to kill your younger brother?"). In some occasions, you might see the translator missing up, because Japanese does not use pronouns very often like English, so most (not all) of the "He & She" in the translation is just the translators effort.
