I feel so bad for Fengxian because it was not only that she has to take regular customer, she was the most famous courtesan in the Verdegris House, only a few could even talk to her and now everyone can afford to "be" with her. I can only imagine how far worse than starting as a regular courtesan should have been. That's also why I hate the old lady, I mean, so nice of her not throwing her on the street but maybe not exploit her until she got sick would have been nicer.

2024-06-12 06:13:37 +0000 UTCLakan's story is truly tragic (miscommunication trope with actually awful consequences) I think the shame wasn't from Luomen becoming a doctor per se, but rather becoming a eunuch: to enter the rear palace, even doctors have to be a eunuch (unless you're the emperor or his kin). Re: the letters, presumably Lakan's residence (where Fengxian sent the letters since she didn't know he left) didn't forward Fengxian's letters to Lakan.

2024-06-10 02:00:13 +0000 UTCyou were right, Lakan chose Go and not chess because he didn’t want to take advantage of MaoMao’s mom and wanted it to be her choice. another thing I found really sweet is that MeiMei was her serving lady, and “sacrificed” herself so that she can get bought out (since Lakan was going to pick MeiMei originally).

Face blindness is a real medical condition usually not as an extreme as Lakan suffers from. 13:05 His shame wasn't that he was a doctor it was that he was the doctor when the Emperor's baby died ( the baby switch) later volumes will mention how brilliant a medical doctor Luomen is, but circumstances failed him. His limp is because he was punished by having a bone in his knee removed as well as being thrown out of the rear palace.
