I guess that makes sense, I grew up watching 90s anime, most people these days haven't heard about, ranma 1/2, GTO, chobits, etc many had fan service that's more ecchi than MDUD. So I guess most people here in Asia just find it normal. I did recommend Mushoku to my Korean exgf, who then recommended it to her sister, and both of them just watched it enjoy the story and didn't even have a reaction to the ecchi stuff. It's just really normalized here in Asia. When I describe fan service with a purpose, I mean for example. In Mushoku, Rudy wanted to keep it a secret that he can cast magic without incantation, but Roxy's skirt being lifted by the wind distracted him while reciting the incantation and he accidentally shot his magic. In Summertime Rendering, the MC saw one of the female character's panties, and then he used the girl's panty pattern to check the timeline he's in later on. There's also a girl in Mushoku that wears a bikini armor, and she does that to avert all the male gaze towards her and away from her sister who's traumatized by men. I don't remember any "smart" use of fan service like that in MDUD. Though I don't really mind fan service for the sake of fan service, I don't see anything wrong with it. I like it even. I just appreciate when there's more purpose behind it rather than just the camera suddenly going down Marin's skirt for example.

IMHO, Most of the complaint about fan service is due to the fact that in western media culture animation is associated with kids/family programming. We grow up watching Saturday morning and after school cartoons and our guts just don't get that to the asian media culture the animators brush is viewed to be the same as the camera. Titles with FS don't air during Saturday morning cartoon blocks, they actually air during late night blocks. I've been an anime fan since the 90's and I have never seen anything that wasn't also done in live action. I do disagree with the statement that the fan service in MDUD is "for the sake of fan service". With a few exceptions there is subtle story telling built around those scenes that I was focused on so much that I didn't even think about it until reactors pointed it out. Of course, I can't point out specifics because that would spoil.

What's wrong with fan service? Maybe because I grew up in the 90s, and anime in that era had more fan service that I don't really mind it, but just because a show has a lot of fan service doesn't mean that's all there is to the show. I'm more of a fan of fan service that actually means something or has a purpose for the plot like the ecchi scenes in Mushoku Tensei or Summertime Rendering, and the fan service in MDUD is fan service just for the sake of fan service, but that doesn't mean that's all there is to the show. It's a nice little slice of life, quite enjoyable. It's not one that will pop in my head when I think of the best anime out there, but personally I think if C&A reacts to it, they'll just have a nice wholesome fun time.

is the fan service absolutely unnecessary and excessive in MDUD? yes, god, I personally hate it. But does that make it a bad show? To me, it's a fat no. Marin is such a good character, the premise is so f-ing cute and interesting, I love it. To me, this overpowers the wrongs of the show! Carlie and Ange watched the op and were certain they wanted to watch it so as long as they get a warning of the "echi" tag on the show I think they'll be alright!

I know somebody else already said it, regarding Made in Abyss, but there's really only like 3 or 4 "trigger-warning moments" in the series. Granted there's 2 that are rough to watch but at the same time they're there to further the story, so it's not just for shock value. And the rest of the series is fine, it's not in your face all the time. It reminds me of Attack on Titan or Game of Thrones in that regard. But that's just my opinion.

From my (German) perspective it is not half as bad as you all make it., neither is it a lot. It is 95%+ RomCom, and coming of age with topics that fit in. And it’s „dress-up“ after all. This is not Gushing over magical Girls or Chained Soldier, those are Ecchi, this is not. There is literally nothing that you don’t see in a park at summertime here. Actually less than that, because there are no bare body parts. None. And it fits the story for where he is coming from and puts you in his shoes, and makes it relatable. They said at the beginning that this isn't and won't be a OP exclusive channel and it wouldn't be taking time from other anime. Still, they do upload several eps several times a week. I think their pace is pretty great for a channel with diverse content. I know Boldcast, I was subbed to their Patreon before. The reason I no longer am is they do have some shows other than OP but 90% of what they upload now is OP and everything else keeps getting delayed. I can understand your view but this isn't Boldcast, they don't want it to become Boldcast and I too hope they never do even if I don't dislike OP and even love some moments from it.

Paul is easily one of the best characters in Mushoku Tensei. He's like the Boromir of the show. Very flawed, but very human. He's so relatable. I think Ange for sure would appreciate him. Rudy's redemption arc is one of the best out there.

Made in abyss is undoubtably the best quality show here imo, it's a masterpiece in many ways. That said it has some very dark moments that can leave you quesy, so that's something to keep in mind. As for my dress up darling, as many has said the fanservice can be uncomfortable and too much at times. If you're capable of ignoring that, or if it doesn't bother you, then it's a fun and cute show, with a great female MC

@Jeff Mushoku's "fan service" isn't the regular fan service we see in anime. There's no girl suddenly tripping and accidentally sitting on the MC's face, or the MC's face getting sandwiched between female boobs. Its "fan service" always had purpose. A good example of that was when a female character's skirt was blown up by the wind and the MC saw her panties. It distracted him to the point of revealing his secret. It actually moved the plot. It wasn't done just simply for the audience to see the panties. In MDUD, there's a lot of scenes that are really just fan service for the sake of fan service, camera would suddenly go down to show Marin's panties for no reason lol. That's just reality. I voted for MDUD btw.

The character writing is actually really good. But the MC and some others like Paul have a very bad character. And that is intentional, it serves the narrative. It's a story about trauma and psychology in general. Have PTSD here, have a narcissist there. Those create the situations and problems and these are the things that keep the story going. Even if it's really weird at the beginning, it is really beautiful to see their character developement. All time favorite, that most people sleep on, cause they can't get over specific scenes.

There're many yet they all share the same personality, brain cell and cock hunger. The male ones aren't much better and the story is bland even for a HP parody. It's true it has quite a bit of fan service but it just adds to the humour for me and should hopefully be a fun reaction, I imagine that's why it's currently winning the poll. So My Dress Up Darling has a good chunk of fan service, but it comes with a very unique quality. All of the fan service shots come specifically from the perspective of Gojo (the male MC). “So what?” you might be thinking, but Gojo is an incredible wholesome and good person who is experiencing attraction to his female classmate. When he sees flashes of Marin’s skin, he blushes, turns away and asks Marin to cover up. It ultimately adds to that nostalgia of having that highschool crush where you steal glances at them, but you aren’t a perve about it. And that’s really what’s up in the long run, there is fan service, but it’s part of the narrative, and it’s not there for pervy reasons. Plus, Marin and Gojo are absolutely adorable together and their relationship is full of wholesome fuzziness
