HxH Ep 136 REACTION!

i think chimera ant arc is the best hxh arc and that it's peak moments (since intro-ing komugi to end of the arc) is some of the best shonen writing. i also read the arc as it was being released, so it took me 10+ years to finish it lmao... bc of that i thought it was "pretty good" but was glad to just move on. then i read it again, and watched it, and have since changed my opinion years ago. but then again, i love adding unnecessary details for the sake of world building even if they arent used (gyro's story, all the details about how NGL works, details about the damn elevator just for it to get blown up lolol). i also love a slow burn. so a lot of the cons mentioned arent really cons to me. i actually dislike a lot of pacing in anime nowadays. it feels like so much happens and imo deep moments even when executed well dont hit as deep when it's over and done in 30 seconds. but i ofc acknowlege togashi's pacing isnt for everyone. there's a great meme about how togashi explains someone choosing how to eat cereal and how long it takes (https://www.reddit.com/r/HunterXHunter/comments/9waw9i/rihan_contemplating_about_how_he_should_eat_his/) it shows future characters design but the text is completely made up i know this is super late but i was a late subscriber and have been watching your reactions to my fave hxh moments, not in any particular order :3

i agree but imo the narrator has a bigger 'consequence' in anime vs the manga e.g taking time vs taking panel space which can be handled more flexibly

Dang bro you feel pretty strong about this. I didn’t read all of what you said cuz it was pretty long but I’m glad there are people out there who love hxh enough to write a 5 paragraph essay on the topic in a comment section with a max of like 200 people

i stand corrected, some fools here have single digit iq, i guess i was too generous by claiming they are rocking double digits

my points can and basically are summarized in 5 sentences, just because i added examples to explain my POV does not mean the whole paragraph is a point. its a short sentence point followed by examples and explanation behind reasoning. If you find that ironic thats fair, but i think there is fine line between detailed explanation and simply saying bunch of shit to make essay seem longer. Also reason i do it is because i dont trust people to understand my point without explaining myself first mostly cause they would always come from biased perspective of hxh stan so i am skipping ahead a bit by explaining myself right away. The fact i still got few responses that scream "i have double digit iq" from hxh fans that desperately worship narrator for explaining everything to them like they are 5 year old just proves my point. If you think what i did is same what togashi did and that is why its ironic then that claim is benefitial to me cause its basically you admitting togashi is overly explaining everything to you because he dont trust you to comprehend his POV so i guess irony is that you are just proving me right

Cayseron

also the irony is that your entire comment can be summarized in like 5 sentences.

Bryan Diaz

then don't buy it. he's not forcing you lol

Bryan Diaz

can you elaborate where is the irony? when i start selling my walls of text you can come back with your witty comment. until then all you proved is how stupid you are

Cayseron

*Writes a giant wall of text just to say claim that Togashi over explains* Love the irony

Just a side note since you mentioned HxH being Togashi's baby. He actually has another baby which is called YuYu Hakusho. It's not as good as HxH, but was also very popular and considered as one of the classics in anime. It's pretty much a straight up battle shonen and I think is what's started the 3-4 person team trope in shonen. Maybe someday you'll watch it, I'll definitely watch your reactions to it.

I dont know how much of it is nippon animations fault and hos much is togashi's. I know guy was very sick over and over, but i also know that he essentially ragequit on his previous manga cause he ran out of ideas how to continue the story (yu-yu hakusho), i also know that he was overworking himself cause he had trust issues and refused to hire a team to help him. There were rumours that he was paranoid an editor was stealing his work but those are just rumours, bottom line is that he refused to hire people and he was doing all the work by himself and i often saw that reason behind it is that he did not trust anyone do draw his creation. I personally blame a lot on togashi cause i've seen others in his shoes who acted differently and came out for the better so ultimately it is his own actions that result in unfavourable outcomes. Togashi also feel to me like person with trust issues. he had a team working with him on previous manga and he wasnt happy with them so most of the stuff with hxh he did by himself to the point where he was releasing volumes that is sloppy hot garbage in terms of visualizations only to go back and redraw and rerealse those volumes again when he was in better shape to draw them better. Ironically for some chapters and its content the rough drawing work in their favour as it looked like positive stylistic choice when in fact its just togashi unable to reach his desired effect. My issue with him is that he cant trust others so he takes everything upon himself which results in all the bullshit with his health issues and all the breaks and inconsistencies with the manga releases. I am also not a fan of convoluted plot twists for sake of prolonging story and "keeping audience on their toes". I hate everything about kite. The way he is introduced in 1st chapter and then never shown again until CA arc only to have him show his nen ability but never really explain how it works (other than basic introduction), and then killing him off but keeping him around for climax to be reveal of him being dead to point of no reverse. Only for then to reveal he is alive as an chimaera ant. For those reading yes i know there is more informations about this that "explains" in the future which is currently spoiler for C&A but that explanation just bring more convoluted hot garbage that makes no sense when you tie it all together. If kite is ant because queen ate his brain (which make sense, after its fight with kite pitou would definitely want king to consume the brain of such a powerful nen user) but if that was the case then the puppet corpse would not be able to cry cause there is no brain in that head. IF there is brain in that head then what did queen eat that gives the little ant kite's memories and identity? Like ok i can understand keeping brain and giving his body to queen under assumption the body of corpse puppet is amalgamation of other corpses with kite brain controlling the body but that is fun fiction. I just want to point out how we had 40 minutes of narrator overly explaining how elevator works and how ikalgo is too much of a coward to kill brovada but we get NO explanation whatsoever about what is going on with kite situation. ALMOST as if togashi himself does not know what he is doing and end up with releasing garbage and then later trying to cover for his own hot garbage by adding relevant informations in the future out of context (not really out of context but forced into conversation in order to reveal informations) only to have the "explanation" just be more of a plothole than solution but i dont want to discuss it further until C&A see it for themselves. I dont blame it on animation cause its not like narrator came out of nowhere, Togashi actually overly explain everything in manga as well and lot of his exposition is impossible to translate to animation without narrator going overtime. I simply hate how little fate in his readers togashi have that he must explain every stroke of hair, every thought, every inner dialogue, meaning of every stroke of chin but then conveniently he does not explain some of the crucial moments which is left for viewers to "speculate"...

Idk if it was a studio problem except for the kite’s introduction. Tbh togashi does have a habit of just over explaining stuff. If you take a look at his manga, it’s just pages of texts of explaining things sometimes. Not saying it’s a bad thing or wtv but it’s just his style as well. It worked rlly rlly well for the peak moments, and some other moments not so much. Even in the new arc in the manga which is like 50 chapters in it’s action-packed and a lot of big explanation cuz he really took on a even bigger arc than chimera arc and I don’t think it’s getting finished considering his health and they are still relatively in the beginning/middle stage of the arc coupled with how long he takes to write one chapter due to his health🙃. However togashi is special in that he is the only author who had written 2 anime’s which are arguably both in the top 10 anime of all time. Hxh and yu yu hakusho. Yu yu hakusho is also rlly moving. The strong point of hxh is arguably the antagonists, whereas the strong point of yu yu hakusho is the protagonist and it’s an amazing shonen show which in my opinion is almost on par with the Naruto’s and dragon ball’s of the world

The yorknew vs chimera arc comparisons are interesting. The yorknew obviously had better pacing and was cleaner overall, but it was relatively more basic, thematically and in terms of literary qualities of the writing. I mean the climax was a subversive hostage exchange, but thematically still came down to "friendship/love is more important than revenge". Thematically, the ant arc was more ambitious and even with it's flaws, as mentioned, the peaks usually make up for it. In general it's easier for shorter stuff to remain flawless and cleaner because there's less room for missteps to happen. Also, the studio wasn't really behind the faults of the arc. The only exception being kite's introduction. Everything else was still togashi. The troupe appeared at the same point in the manga, during the arc, the messy priorities and lack of texture in certain parts of the story/world building are also him, not really the studio. The narrator was also togashi. And outside of super-mega fans of the anime/manga, most would agree togashi isn't a perfect writer and it's been revealed he was actually going through health problems a lot and took very long hiatus from writing. He's still good and a ambitious and creative writer in general, but not flawless. Super fans of anything will usually over-glaze stuff and may misrepresent criticisms. last random notes: - the climax of the arc in ep 134 was a nice reflection of the motif of ants remembering their past lives throughout the arc, meruem needing to remember komugi. - the mother and ant reunion in this episode could have been done better. She accepted her awfully fast. Wouldn't the human trauma cause a lot more complications for that? I would have liked a bit more ambiguity and build up for it, but i understand they didn't want to linger on it.
