131 was an all time episode. So good.

You confused the word Peak with Tears and Infinite sadness

Ttsukasa

For me, this is a top 1 for this arc. But it can still be argued, that there is an episode remaining that is more PEAK for some audience...

SoySauce

The condition was not to have a 50/50 chance against Pitou but a 100% chance victory against pitou. It just happens that having a 100% chance against Pitou means having enough power to challenge the King.

SoySauce

I never get tired of seeing people react to 131. It's definitely one of the highest highs in hunter x hunter.

Dune

souma shou

So, I am sure somebody has, or will, mention this, but when Pitou said that Gon was "As strong as the King" it is somewhat misleading. In the manga translation it is worded differently, Pitou actually said "that [Gon's] fangs may reach the King", and it is sort of more something that from Pitou's perspective both the King and Adult Gon were so far above her power that all she knows is that he is a threat to the king, but it isn't 100% that Adult Gon is ~as strong~ as the King, especially post Rose powerup

JadonTheEternal

i dont think gon was thinking about meruems power, and a point worth noting, when Pitou says his power might be equal to the kings, bear in mind she hasnt seen him since absorbing Pouf & Youpi's life force, he can fly now & use those nen beams

Brandon Barnwell

Using Chrome and lowering the video resolution to the lowest setting got it working for me, if anyone else is running into this issue

Paqi

Been waiting for this one for a long time! Make sure that you guys catch the post credit scene after episode 135 please!!!

avalon

44:00 he's as strong as the King because he just has that much potential in him. This is a level that Gon could reach one day through training. Makes sense when you see how strong he and Killua already are at such a young age.

Frederic Faddoul

Is anyone else having trouble with the buffering on streamable? It pauses to buffer every few seconds for me. I've tried it with a couple browsers, including Chrome

Paqi

Carlie, you missed what Ange was trying to throw at you, the entire point of this mission was to kill the KING, but like EVERY SINGLE OTHER MISSION OR PLAN WE'VE SEEN GON PARTICIPATE IN, he REMAINS SELFISH, He always sacrifices the mission for his own goals. And this is the largest display of that to date. Gon does Gon and DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT about the rest. Deep within Gon wants what he wants and in this moment he wanted to REVENGE KITE. That was it. Gon might have had the ability to kill the King if he'd made this sacrifice when facing the King, but Gon didn't, as Pitous said "Gon wasted it on her" he said fuck it all, take my ENTIRE EVERYTHING, I'LL GIVE YOU ALL I HAVE IN RETURN TO KILL THIS THING IN FRONT OF ME AND WHO CARES IF I DIE OR IF THE WORLD DIES OR GETS CONQUERED BY THE KING, I DONT CARE ANYMORE. I DONT CARE ANYMORE. That is what Gon meant in that moment. Gon who has sacrificed his hands, friends, innocents etc on whims to fulfill his desires, just stepped it up a level. He gave any chance they had to kill the King, in order to revenge Kite. This is what I absolutely love about Gon's Growth. Enhancers really are a different bunch.

Ttsukasa

As others have said Gon pretty much made a sacrifice. "I don't care if this is the end, but give me all the power i'll ever have." Is pretty much what is implied. When pitou said "an enemy blessed with immense talent has been forced to exchange all that talent for this power" it backs that up. It just so happens that Gon, had he trained long enough, would be as powerful as the king.

Erick O

its funny i never really noticed it until i watched that episode back but in anime we often see our favourite characters defeat people and it results in the person they are fighting, dying. but rarely have i ever seen our protagonists just kill in a way that is murder. the way togashi has decided to deal with the outcomes of these battles has subtle changes but the way those changes may the audience feel about what they have just witnessed i thing is the thing that makes this seem so different. it was the same when kurapika was killing Uvogin. and when the troupe went on the rampage at the end of episode 51.

Edward Worrall

To explain Gon's condition without a wall of text. It's basically what Gon would have eventually turned into if he had grown up normally with diligent training. It's more or less "turn me into the best version of myself now in exchange for my life force"

Astor Lefflinker

And this is the culmination of Gon's flaws that have been hinted since the start. You two picked up that something's off w/ Gon. He's totally okay with his friend being an assassin, ripping out a dude's heart, etc. It comes off as innocent naivety at first, but something dark was always in Gon. This obsession with Pitou wasn't revenge or justice, it was Gon enveloped in wrath. He refused reality and threw a childish fit, essentially. Just coming from a kid who can make a crater in a mountain. And now he's paid the price.

Ethan J Soto

Apparently there are some pre-OP scenes that are featured in the coming episodes as well that aren't just "recaps" of what happened in the last episode. I hope they don't skip them and I hope they include them in the full-lengths.

The Great Santini

@Carlie I think your confusion about Gon's power level being equal to the King can be explained by telling you this: This is what Gon did: he traded all of the potential Nen he would ever use in his life to become himself at his peak adult form (a form strong enough to destroy Pitou). This implies that Gon would have become a Nen master and one of the strongest Nen users ever (which makes sense... he's been considered strong since the beginning and his "potential" has been talked about since the beginning of the series). He put a condition on himself that said: "Give me all of the power I will ever have for this one moment and in return I will never be able to use Nen again." Sacrificing your ability to use Nen for the rest of your life is some serious shit, as we see here. This also speaks to the amount of training (both physically AND Nen-wise) that future Gon would have put himself through. PS: I'm team crop-top. That shit added to his design. The one thing that made me laugh when I first saw it was the infinity-hair but after a 2nd viewing, I think it's kinda cool lol.

The Great Santini

Let me try to explain Gon’s situation; First of all we need to remember the explanation of condition and nen by Kurapika; your nen becomes more powerful depends on your hatred and for powerful contract you should have strong will and you must be very determined(remember kurapika’s hatred to spiders and his strong will let him to get powerful nen but very severe conditions like he can not use it on anyone but spiders if do he dies) For Gon situation we have watched his strong will and his determination about killing Pitou since almost beginning of the arc. In this situation he traded all of his potential and future for just to kill Pitou. This is important , this power and condition is just to kill Pitou nothing more and its results worse than death for Gon. No one else other than Gon can not make this kind of contract against Pitou because of Gon’s will and obsession to this. Another point is that to kill Pitou you need to be a power level at least equal to the king that previous from Netero fight . That’s also the last time Pitou see the king so she does not know his current power level. That’s why she said Gon’s power is equal to the king ,it is not exactly means Gon can fight the king equally.

yunus

Agree. Many people might be in a condition where they feel that they don't mind if they end here in exchange of power to defeat someone. But not anyone is going to become like Gon. It must be someone with as much talent and potential as Gon to do this.

Aizensalami

You wrote pretty much what I wanted to say. Spot on.

Artistikk

There is one thing in this episode that was foreshadowed a long time ago that I didn't catch until like the 15th rewatch. When they first leave the nest and the king eats that family on the farm and strikes Pitou, Meruem mentions how tough Pitou is and that he was trying to kill Pitou. Everyone thinks all of those punches from Gon are overkill, but even after all of the flashes Killua sees in the woods Gon doesn't actually smash Pitous head until the strike when Killua gets there. Gon wasn't losing control when he kept punching Pitou, it just took that many hits to smash Pitou's head and he wasn't going to stop until he smashed the head because that's what Kite told him to do.

ep 131 is literally one of the best episodes in anime. that episode alone cemented hxh in my top 3 favorite animes. I'm so relieved that you guys absolutely loved it haha, and angelo, i've been quietly waiting for this reaction to finally give you some props lmaoo, cause from what i remember you called out a situation similar to this back in heavens arena or york new arc!! can't remember well but i do remember you saying something like that and connecting it to gon being stubborn and selfish, which leads me to something i would like to discuss, but i'll have to wait til you guys finish the series! i truly loved your reaction, it was a literal rollercoaster for u guys, same was for me, and i relate to carlie crying so much cause i was in tears too when i watched gon literally throw his life away because he couldn't handle the guilt he felt for "not" saving kite. seeing the bright and sweet boy we met in episode 1 murder someone so violently was never in my hxh bingo card, it was literally one of the most hyped fights in the series but in the end all we can do is feel extremely uncomfortable while watching him exteriorize all his anger, sadness and guilt for that "mistake". when they were trying to understand what could be happening inside the castle with the king, morel asked all of them "why would you try to hurt yourself?" and gon answered in his mind "when i couldn't forgive myself", to me, that moment hinted this result, and many more things did too but i want to dissect gon's character when you guys finally see what happens after all this. oh and killua seeing the person he probably loves the most commit suicide in front of him? yeah, that sht will haunt me for YEARS, devastating. well, next week is peak too! i'm so excited to know your thoughts on how the arc ends

beannie

The upcoming episodes have opening scenes that are not replays from previous episodes. Please be sure not to miss them, especially the opening scenes from 134 and 135. Also, 135 has a post-credit scene.

Astor Lefflinker

Gon's power comes directly from his potential that the series has been harping on since near the beginning. He simply traded all the time and training necessary to reach that point now instead of later. Like, if Leorio or someone else made the same trade, they may get a lot stronger, but not to the extent Gon would. It also contrasts with Netero, who actually trained and reached his power naturally. So if adult Gon is as strong as the King, it means that he had the potential to be that strong. I mean we saw that Netero was able to keep up with the King even if it was ultimately weaker. Gon may just have so much potential that his ceiling was really high. Gon's super muscular form (though they could have went with a slightly less silly design, get rid of the crop-top and just keep the pants aka similar to Hulk) seems to suggests that would be a potential adult Gon that trained endlessly like Netero did. Cause we know Ging is a powerful nen user as an adult and he doesn't look like that. Anyways, yeah this is a peak hxh episode. The initial transformation is one of the most unique (especially at the time) transformations in anime. The style actually resembles Mob Psycho style, even though that came out much later, just the animation style reminded me of it on this rewatch. It's also a unique shonen transformation in that it's not treated triumphantly or as a shallow power boost. Gon's done with nen. It has real consequences and some tragic undertones to the fact that he was driven to this point. Same goes with the killing of Pitou that you guys outlined. It's setup by the dynamic shifting in the arc. It's rare in shounen that revenge killing isn't treated triumphantly. Either it's completely justified so viewers can feel good about it, or they'll insert a super tragic backstory for the villain (though sudden flashbacks with little regard for setup or structure) so you can feel sorry for the villain afterwards. However the dynamic here was setup from just developments that happen within the arc itself. No flashbacks or backstories. The royal guards just naturally become more fleshed out and changed.

Veya

Yeah this episode is a masterclass in subversion of expectations. Throughout the arc, Gon is training. Kite was training Gon. Knuckle was training Gon. And it seemed to start to pay off. You know all arc long that Gon wants, NEEDS, to fight Pitou. And then the buildup to the fight starts. You have the Netero/Meruem fight beforehand, which shows Netero gradually building up his power until Zero Hand. And you expect Gon's fight with Pitou to go, somewhat, similar. After all, Gon trained for this purpose ! And then it's totally not. If anything it's the entire opposite of what you'd expect, you'd expect Pitou to overpower Gon for a while until he gets some kind of powerup. Instead Gon just overpowers Pitou and ends the fight in one episode. And it works spectacularly. So good.

Jonah van Kerkhof

he sets the condition when he says "I don't care if this is the end"

souma shou

Love how togashi's storyline plays out like a children's book/poem. Boy plays with his kite A cat comes and breaks his kite Angry, he hurts the cat Gon's arc is basically a haiku for growing up

souma shou

What you guys were debating about Pouf: you guys were both kinda right. Pouf is invested in "what the King should be" which is a valid way of looking at Meruem from his perspective. He wants the King to be what he was actually made and destined for after the long evolution of his species: to rule over all other life forms. In Pouf's eyes, the best way for the King to truly become the King was without Komugi's presence. For a Chimera Ant Royal Guard, this is a complete and legitimate thing a Royal Guard should do. In Pouf's eyes, a Royal Guard of his position is betraying the King and all his potential by getting Komugi back into his life, someone who he felt was detracting from the King's purpose. From a Royal Guard's perspective like Pitou who was invested in "who the King actually was inside and all that he wanted to do", Pitou believed as a Royal Guard that saving and protecting Komugi was the best way to enact the King's will. She witnessed first hand how much the King cared for Komugi and realized at that very moment when Komugi was dying with the King cradling her that she was important to the King who was important to her. Both are completely legitimate ways of acting as a Royal Guard for the King. We end with Youpi who as a Royal Guard, was solely focused on being the Shield of the King. The King's safety was ultimately all that mattered to him. If the King was safe and was on the path Pouf wanted he'd be content. If the King was safe and was on the path Pitou wanted, he would have been content.

wow

One of my favorite set up / pay off in HxH is when Phinks told Gon and Killua after Yorkshin arc that nen can become even more dangerous after death. Pitou's devotion was so powerfull her nen made her fight after death. I can easily imagine what Kurapika's nen would do with all his hatred.

Maxime Goettelmann

I'll just mention that the literal translation of Pitou's words were: "His fangs can reach the King" (as a reference to Pitou's previous mental metaphor while she was healing Komugi where we see a tiger behind him) so it's not quite factual about Gon = King in terms of power (plus Pitou doesn't know he got revived and stronger now) but Pitou feels that in that form, Gon could become a threat to his life. Which is fundamentally different.

Araragi Senpai

The thing with the king is that shaia loves the idea of the king and how he is supposed to be and not the way the king has developed and changed from his experiences.

Gnidis

Episode 135 has a post credit scene make sure you don't miss it. Can someone let them know

Ammar gayal

The conditions for Gon's power up aren't very clear, but if you stop to think about it, it makes more sense. Considering Pitou's and Killua's comments, the overall rules of Nen, and what the show gives us, it's more so or so something like: Gon is an excellent fighter, someone with limitless potential pretty much (Which is regonized by Netero, Killua, other senior hunters, even Pitou herself.) At that point Gon decides he's willing to let go of everything. Not only his life, as in "He'll die because of it" but everything, what he is, his future, all of his potential. Given he had continued on normally, he would "eventually" become that thing. That is peak Gon. The mature and perfect Gon. The Apex of his power. So in order to manifest that, for this short amount of time, for this one battle, he was willing to sacrifice ever being able to become that. In essence, his Nen forced Gon to achieve his prime for a short period of time, which considering how amazing his potential was, turned to be a huge power up, but the condition then is immense, because he would be giving away that potential, his whole life so to say, not only his imediate life force or living life, so to say. That wouldn't be enough of a price for such an immense power up. It is only equivalent of a price EXACTLY because he had the potential to be that strong already.

135 is true peak

Kaiser the Elitist

we got to watch episodes 130-131 the ride of the life guys, love the reaction to it, we are nearing the end of chimera arc, I NEED YOUR REACTION TO EPISODE 135! AND PLEASE REACT TO THE AFTER SCENE CAUSE THIS ONE HIT HARD GUYS! The arc ends in episode 136 so we are just 5 episodes to the end, it has been a long arc and many things had happened, cant wait for your opinion of the complete package after this

Edward Chireno

Killua's VA abolutely killed it...the scream at the end 😭

Kaiser the Elitist

That's pretty much my feelings on the arc. The high moments are great, but there's a lot I don't enjoy as much so it's maybe second last on my favorite arcs. And HxH is my 2nd or 3rd fav anime so I do love it overall. I just have too many personal issues with the arc.

Unholy

The shounen power-up that makes you feel bad.

Lofi Tech

For episode 135 please watch after the end credits !

Chloé

131 is my favorite episode ever I thin, alongside the Attack on Titan episode ranked first online. The rythm, the narrator, the music choice and timing, the artistic ideas (black and white), the symbolism, the themes... it's the very apex, the unexpected conclusion of what the whole arc prepared for Gon. We dreamed of a fight, Togashi didnt give us one. We could have been disappointed to wait all this time.... but now. It's written with such a perfect balance and it feels so natural.... so right, it's impossible to imagine how it could have been written more perfectly.
