Some symptoms of heavy metal poisoning are confusion, aggression and sometimes even violence. So the Lihua we saw who slapped Gyokuyou and was screaming at her was not the real Lihua. The way she was at the end with Maomao was her true personality.

"ignorance is a sin" as said in ep 1. beauty being what these ladies know rings even truer when you think about how as ladies-in-waiting, they may come from semi-influential families themselves and thus raised to believe beauty = value and worth = how rich/powerful of a man you can "secure" with said beauty. as you said, there was no ill intent in using the face powder. they may have genuinely believed doing so helped maintain Concubine Lihua's value amidst her deteriorating state and chose to ignore the warnings regarding its poisonous nature. that said, Lihua better than me because that lady would've never gotten a chance to come back if it were me π

Not only was it extremely heartwarming, it was also sad because she did to Maomao what she could no longer do for her baby. She still has that maternal love, and she didn't have any problem showing it to a lowly servant. π₯Ή
