POTENTIALY EMOTIONAL SPOILER FOR ANYONE READING SO STAHP: btw FGK i finished the show season 1 yesterday ( i know i know, i hate my weak will power too). And ehm... yeah... so... my theory about the "internal affairs" of the wall was totally something i predicted even from THIS batch of episodes if u cathc my drift on who's who and who's ...not ... what really punched me in the gut and in the feelings was the last few episodes of about the "faceless bet" and the actual original POV told, man, it was nice. also i think this show's good but i will say that maomao's a bit of a weird one, i feel like the show could have spent more time on her a bit in terms of explaining why she's a bit of a crackhead. We just accepted it at some point but also i feel like maybe the audience sometimes can know "too much" before the characters themselves kinda do ? but then again sometimes the characters know too much and dont share with other characters? like... im sititng in my chair screaming : TALK. TO. THAT. OTHER. ONE. It felt a bit of a rollercoaster, sometimes maomao can solve the weirdest cause/effect scenarios or something but then other times she's sitting on goldmines of info and doesnt "CONNECT THE DOTS". and i want to believe that she doesnt connect the dots and speak up beacuse she doesnt WANT TO as opposed to "she doesnt know yet". and i think they touched on that, but i also feel like thats the part i was saying about knowing maomao a bit more can help in terms of understanding WHY she doesnt care. is it fear for her life to be too nosy? is it just the culture back then? is she too distracted etc. It's again, left for the audience to kinda "assume" things, instead of "figuring out things", which is fine for me, i love it in AoT, but over there you always have a tinfoil hat on...because the show tells you everything by not telling you anything explicitly, whereas here it's inconsistent in terms of "what it tells us, almost more like re:zero than aot" in terms of lore dumps. but hey, thanks for acting as my rubber ducky for this mini conversation im having with myself lol. have a good day.

Cyber

ahhh kk so the whole political marriage , while true in some cases, was definitely not the last Emperor's New Groove vibe LOL *some dark humor for ya lol* and yeah fair enough about the comments themselves alluding to something can make someone think differently than had they just watched it offline alone lol. PS: you made me curious about something, and i got too invested in episodes 4/5/6, and i lost the battle of attrition against my binge watching... so i watched a couple more episodes that were very sweet like Honey :/, and ok, i see why the age note was a grey area in terms of "should i say or let it go" comment, BUT i think so far it hasn't really affected me yet unless there's something even more, but i think 1 week of episodes while waiting on carlie/ange to catch up is good enough for now lol

Cyber

ok thx, sure full reaction obviously but also want to re-watch the anime itself without half the episode being blurred

YellowboyRickLee

They did mention somewhere that the copyright rules where they live is harsher than with how it is with the other reactor channels, or something. We are here to watch their reaction anyway and not the anime itself. We pay for the full reaction.

Emperor: *Asking Maomao to "look after" Lady Lihua..." Ange: Getting some emperor action. He seems alright. 🙂 Carlie: Yeah Maomao: "...declining would mean beheading." Ange: Oh. Maybe not. 😐 Lihaku: *Giving Maomao a hairpin* Carlie: Awww...☺️ he looks nice. Maomao: *Saw multiple hairpins* Carlie: Oh 😒 The show instantly saying like "Nope" to them when they're having a good impression of someone 🤣

FGK

It's okay. It's really nice to see that people are invested in this show. Doing their research about the culture and stuff back then, their theories in certain scenes, etc. ☺️ The previous emperor though is just really problematic. I do understand that powerful families during ancient times, in whatever country, are marrying off their daughters for political reasons. But not the previous emperor though, it's not just political for him. And it's the same for other previous rulers irl. Yeah, that hairpin has a lot of possible meanings but in the end Gyokuyou did not quite like that 😆 And what you said about people commenting about stuff about spoilers will make people pay attention to it more made sense actually. I usually just dm the person about the spoiler so other people won't really notice but I can't do that here that's why I just replied via comment 😅.

FGK

no problemo. I'll clean up the original comment since my follow comments i intentionally left out his age! Thanks for the chat btw, and for being understanding that it wasn't in ill intent or anything, just speculation. That being said, I actually am very open to those "hard topics". I put myself in the mindset of what was "acceptable" in the social setting, time setting or even "established rules" of this world. And while CLEARLY the former emperor was... problematic if we were to look at it at this day and age, it's unfortunately not unknown to OUR current history that younger girls were "married off" to kings and emperors and people in position of power, usually not because of the "pervy" nature of it, but because they HAD to, in order to establish political favor or relationships between competing parties or simply to resolve a larger issue. Now I did see above that the current emperor was born out of a similar young age and that he doesn't agree with his father's actions (and that's why Lisha is lower ranked courtesan as he never interacted with her), I do put myself in the mindset of "ok, this would suck in this day and age, and clearly not acceptable bUt "wHaTaBoUt BaCk ThEn" in the show. And I gotta give the show credit for tackling those taboo subjects in a realistic mindset, but also frugal and respectful and also doing with "tact". It's not condoning nor accepting any of the portrayed topics, similar to AoT, the show is stating the facts as they are, explaining what has happened to can happen, and it's up to the viewer to digest that info with their own mindsets. Personally I wasn't put off by jinshi constantly hitting on MaoMao for example because for me it felt less like a "pervy guy hitting on a younger girl" and more about "this guy, who is used himself as a tool by the emperor to seduce ladies and is only as useful as his beauty" is suddenly intrigued by someone who's not giving him the time of day, and if anything, as a very smart and cunning man, he seems to also be conducting experiments almost to see WHY she's not responding to him, but he's not being pushy and forcing himself on her, he is just slightly dancing around that line of comfort zone and barrier that she set, but he's never crossing it. The second she pushes him away, he steps back and comes back later, but when she showed him true honesty about what happened to her, he didnt flaunt around galavanting next to her, but instead took a step back immediately and stopped focusing on her makeup and beauty and more about "her feelings" and he connected with that sombre emotion and felt compassion and tried to do his part to show that compassion and gave her a hairpin to show solidarity or maybe it's guilt or maybe it's "its ok, you're under our wing now, you're safe" hairpin (my interpretation), but ultimately he's clearly a complex character. I LOVE those character driven stories that do not shy away from discussing hard topics AS LONG AS they FIT in the settings of that world. This same character may not be acceptable in a modern "slice of life" show in the 2000s for example, but it makes perfect sense in that era. Thats the same thing i felt about Uzui Tengen (sound hashira in DS) when many people were jumpy around him, but you could see that society had different standards back then. Eitherway, sorry about the wall of text ,i just wanted to say that this is not going to push many viewers away from the show, because it was done with tact and tastefully. I'll amend the comment above! thanks agains for indulging me!

Cyber

I can see you haven't watched this yet and are watching this series with C&A that's why I commented. And I completely understand why there are some who research the age. The previous emperor had some...undesirable tastes 🤢 And the anime will continue to tackle uncomfortable topics later on but it won't be "too hard to watch" kind of discomfort. This show has made it quite hard for us to give some fun facts or whatever without it being a spoiler. And Jinshi's age is spoiler-ish. So yes, if you could delete just Jinshi's part. Even tho they know, for the others who doesn't know yet, just in case ☺️ And to sorta, make up for Jinshi's part, here's a trivia about empress dowager (the emperor's mother) that's not really a spoiler...She gave birth to emperor when she was 10.

FGK

It's a little more subtle than that. A person of lowly status like the servants or ladies in waiting shouldn't be able to afford accessories on that level (or any level at all in the case of Maomao). The fact that they have any is implicitly understood by other people as having been gifted by others in more prominent standings, also known as "backing power". Seen this way, you can infer Jinshi's intention to protect Maomao by essentially saying "a person of very high social status has taken a liking to her, you with malicious intents had best back the **** off," which makes sense as a response after hearing about her dangerous past and seeming visually guilty about his partial complicity (he seems to think he's supposed to be responsible for the policing of such acts, and if he couldn't protect her before then he will sure as heck try now). Normally, however, for someone to bestow a gift of value across social classes like that implies a heavy.. debt to them, and (this is not my opinion) a man doing so for a woman under him is, as explained, either a transactional form of recruitment (I gave you something valuable, you should "consider" repaying me with your talents) or the more romantic kind. Because what else could a man be interested in a woman for... is what they imply to be the societal norm. I also don't know how much freedom you'd have to NOT wear it because the important person could be offended and make life miserable for you. It's a rather "heavy" gift/favor, if you've ever heard such a term before.

V D

If you think I should remove jinshi's part (although carlie and ange said in the show that they were told already so that they can "navigate" the conversation better) then i'll do it. But my issue with it being a "spoiler" is that as a person who hasn't seen the show. Hell, I made my comment even before watching episdoes 4/5/6 as i'm watching them live with carlie and ange, it's that the age itself means nothing to me as an "in-lore" spoiler. It's purely so for internet "safe discussions" reasons, and whether i know his age or not, it revealed absolutely nothing to me from the show that would have changed my viewing of the show. So if a person literally commenting that as a first time watcher, never seen show or anything before, watching in realtime, and says "oh, jinshee's X age, so we can feel a bit more comfortable and not cringe about discussing the show" then i dont know how that can be a spoiler vs someone who's SEEN the show and may think that the age is relevant. Until the plot itself makes a mystery out of it, for me it made no difference other than to navigate. It's no different than saying "Tanjiro in demon slayer is like 15, and nezuko is around 14". In that show it might not have made a difference (so far at least, im only an anime watcher), so it may also not make a difference here to know the age groups. Lishu's age of "9 and then 14 " however is CLEARLY a topic of the show and therefore was focused on, but the show made it clear that it's a topic of discussion here. But jinshi and maomao's ages AT THIS MOMENT feel irrelevent to the viewing, so telling the viewers like myself that it's a spoiler is now making the viewer aware of it even more and can in itself be a spoiler? Eitherway, like i said, if i should remove this i'll remove this, but i think Carlie and Ange expressed during their attempt at watching Death Note that there's certain topics that could be hard to navigate for them, so this was an attempt at showing solidarity and i took the risk for myself to resolve this concern for them so they can feel more at ease. If i found something "CLEARLY spoilery or mysterious" in that simple google first-result search, i'd have taken the hit for myself and not shared it here. I also made efforts to leave the "should we know" decision ultimately to ange/carlie by calling out what i found and putting ample spacing to "stop reading" as a disclaimer. But i am a part of this beautiful community, and as a person who's the "trivia guy" on other shows like AoT and DS and Re:zero, i can understand if someone is worried abotu a spoiler, and therefore if you say to remove it, i'll absolutely follow the consensus and remove it and wait to find oujt "Why i had to remove it" when the show keeps rolling :) Sounds fair? let me know/.

Cyber

Jinshi's age is somewhat a spoiler. It sorta reveals some secrets. That's why not many who watched the show are answering C&A when they're asking for the age. I think you're the second one I saw that answered. Giving infos about the show and characters is hard because this anime has a lot of mysteries and those bits of info are clues if they can put them together 😓. Infos about the culture and customs of the country from the past is fine tho.

FGK

im watching the episodes with you guys (not even pre-watching, it's all live, ange/carlie). Trying something new to see if i can make the same theories as you guys in realtime. but i had to look up Maomao and Jinshi's age, since you asked, so my answer is not a spoiler but a clarification since it's hard to tell anime-wise. My answer is below, Ange/carlie: - - _ _ __ ___ Maomao is apparently super late teans at the start of the show now. And Jinshi seems to be not TOO far off in age where it would be "creepy". Whatever that age is that i wont say because i had to google it (personally i tihnk it's not a big deal to check it but i can see that some think it's important to discover it with the show, so ima let it at that) For those worried about the "flirting", it's not super crazy. But apparently (now that i've watched this set of episodes in this revised comment) the show is clearly not afraid of tacking taboo subjects so regardless of it, i think we should just accept it as a world setting and watch the character growth and move on ! Like, while it's still "?" in today's age, I think that back then, in the lore of the show, i think that would have been perfectly "Reasonable" compared to all other romantic/courting "stories" we've seen in anime. Probably one of the most realistic ones at that, like how you have highschool senior guy and freshman girl in relationship, and then then he goes off to university or something, or goes off to serve in the war etc... i think in most states and in most countries, it's still a reasonable and "legal" courting effort as long as it's consentual? I can't say it on behalf on all places, but I know in Lebanon for example, that's very common for highschool sweethearts and even marriage proposals or at least courting, in the hopes of them getting married. It just has to be consentual and respectful.

Charles Malo

Such a good grouping of episodes! This anime handles the heavier topics nicely. There are a lot of uncomfortable circumstances, but this show definitely doesn't try to tip toe around them. And also does a good job of writing the characters in a way that alleviates the more uneasy feelings you might get while watching. Which is something I can appreciate!

Gabriel Barott

Yeah it does but it's fitting for the setting and treated as such, so I'm not mad about it either.

KaijinGarou

To avoid copy?

KaijinGarou

I relate to carlies reactions so much, this anime triggered me a bit with all the heavy topics, but they did an incredible job with that too, I’m so excited for yall to see how things escalate from here

beannieswife

Just wondering, why is the video still blurred sometimes if behind a paywall?

YellowboyRickLee

Can I just say the way Carlie says 'Maomao' sounds like meow meow sometimes which is so fitting since Maomao's name literally translates to cat <3

Meg

I'm so happy you guys are liking this show 😁 It really gets interesting along the way. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but Maomao wound up her upper body before slapping that girl 😆 so there was more power in that slap...and pain. Oh and you're not the only one having a hard time with Lady Lihua's name. So I just call her Liwah 😁 Anyway, it's quite difficult to say anything now without giving any spoilers or whatever coz ep.5 is like the starting line for everything. Again, so glad you're enjoying this one. Looking forward to the next one.

FGK

This right here! Love that the show does not shy from showing these issues even though it can be hard to watch knowing that such issues were (and still are to a good extent) very much real :(

Meg

A great explanation for the hairpins, would like to add that it can also be to show appreciation as Lady Lihua also gave a hairpin but not out of romantic interest or wanting to recruit her. Also earlier in the episode Gyokuyo gave all her ladies-in-waiting jewellery as a way to 'mark them as hers' but its more like a gift for them. I really love the layered meanings of all these gestures.

Fleetfoot

I know! They're so observent.

poisonivybag

Ep 4 was a game changer! Completely roped us in

Carlie & Ange

oh and another thing. you can see by now that the show deals with some heavy topics like sexual assault or Lishu’s age. I, for one, am glad that the show realistically portrays the struggles of women at the time, but I understand it can be uncomfortable to watch at times

Martina

I was also confused about the hairpins, so here’s an explanation: A man can gift a hairpin to a woman as a show of romantic interest. The woman then can decide to accept or refuse it. If the woman in question is a maid or a lady in waiting in the rear palace, the man can then vouch for her to leave the rear palace to pass some time with him. A woman wearing the gifted hairpin is a sign that she likes the man who gifted it. But apparently Mao Mao isn’t aware of this custom, so that’s why it turns out funny. The hairpins are also a signal of one’s social status - the more elaborate the pin, the higher someone’s status.

Martina

I don't know what you're talking about 😏🤫😉

Charlotte PhD.

Same. If they're doing 3 at a time then the next ones are 7-9. They need to prepare mentally for 2 of these ones. Which two? I wonder 😆

FGK

I was waiting for this all week! I'm so happy you're watching this anime! I absolutely looooved your react and I can't wait for the next one. I need more of this, I'm too impatient 🤣.

Charlotte PhD.

My favorite episode

The Great Santini

I think it should be made clear that MaoMao grew up in what could be considered "the ghetto" or "red-light district." Women of a lower station probably got abused/r-worded/etc all the time in that world so MaoMao wanted to avoid that as best as she could. I love that scene because it shows that Jinshi feels somewhat responsible for the life she had in her original home (outside of the palace). MaoMao thinks, "Why would a palace servant (a Eunuch) feel responsible for the crime that happened there?"

The Great Santini

The light novel is more shoujo while the manga is more seinen I think but it fits into shoujo too with the female lead so I'll count it as part shoujo 😁

Meg

Sure although I'm not sure AD is shoujo. I guess it partly is but mainly medical mystery and suspense.

KaijinGarou

Well that's gonna change when they meet that certain "someone" later on.

FGK

Love that they didn't forget the "hand" when Lihua was looking at hers. That's a tiny detail that'd play a major clue later on.

FGK

Totally agree on Dr. Stone being a good follow-up.

FGK

They start you off with eps.1-3 that were quite slow and chill. So when ep.4 happened *boom* 🤯. This is one of the best and the first of many intense mind blows in this show ever. Definitely one of my faves. Carlie's long gasp was me as well 😆 Ange looked sorta scared of Maomao there too. I kept going back to their reactions. Carlie commenting on the part where Lihua's looking at her hand, that's good coz they're not forgetting that tiny detail coz, again, Maomao's hand will reveal A LOT later on. It's hard to comment now about the other eps coz it's going to end up as a spoiler. All I can say is, ep.5 is where puzzle no.1 starts.

FGK

I'm not a huge shoujo fan myself but AnY, SB and now AD have my whole heart lol.

Meg

I surprisingly enjoyed Bocchi way more than I expected so I get you😁

Meg

I was dying to get off work just to watch these episodes with you. I absolutely love The Apothecary Diaries🫶🏻

Anna

It wasn't the "coleslaw" that was poisoned it was the soup.

ZckFox

So happy to see you guys react to this! One of my faves. 😍

Roni

I love watching a series I haven't seen before with you guys, its fun to see some theories i have be brought up by you and also have things I missed pointed out! Especially with this one, where theres some mystery involved and interesting characters being developed ^_^

# vivi

The previous emperor’s… tastes disgust the current emperor and he refuses to touch Lishu, and that’s why her position is so low in rankings.

Jesse Fraser

I never thought this before, but Dr. Stone may be a great follow-up to TAD when you finish. If you're up for watching a chill show with overarching mystery that also educates you on science and practical everyday uses of science. --- Jinshi being muscular and tall is interesting. I wonder if Eunuchs can even develop musculature if their hormone factories were cut off. --- Atsumi Tanezaki also voices from Mob Psycho 100.... TOME!!!!! It's crazy. You've seen so many of her different roles and it's impossible to tell it's her.

JN

previous emperor was gross I saw that poisoned food, and my first thought was coleslaw too

Atar

For info (no spoilers), the Empress Dowager (the current emperor's mother) was indeed 10 when she gave birth to the Emperor, and yes, the previous emperor was a "nailfile". The Pure Consort Lishu, who was one of the previous Emperor's consorts, was never touched and the current Emperor doesn't "visit" her. So she's luckily been spared. Also, I'm REALLY enjoying how much you pay attention to detail and pick up on things for your discussion later on 😁

poisonivybag

Yeah every outro is like "next ep we'll be spooky for real" and every intro is like "just kidding" 🤣

KaijinGarou

Well I love Bocchi too that I think it's shoujo?

KaijinGarou

Flagellation is whipping. Surely not funny but could've been worse 😅

KaijinGarou

I haven't. I'm more into seinen than shoujo but I do love AD and Maomao. I have quite a few secondary female characters I love here and there but I don't remember liking a protagonist one so much before, so I just gave Maomao that spot xD.

KaijinGarou

Same, idk if you've read/watched Yona of the dawn and Skip Beat. Those are my top fav shoujo series with Yona and Kyoko being my favourite female shoujo leads of all time, and with this show, Maomao is on the same level as them for me. 😍

Meg

The way Carlies face went from :) to >:( when seeing lady Lishu interact with Jinshin XD

Mango

Yeah I already liked her but she won me over there. She's now my favorite female protagonist.

KaijinGarou

Same here! I was appalled when it showed that they were still putting that powder on Lady Lihua and was like 'oh no someone needs to b*tch-slap those maids' and Maomao stepped up. Fell in love with her right there! It's even better when you realize Maomao tries her best to stay out of drama so that she can live inconspicuously and yet in that moment she gave her piece of mind like she should even if that put her even more under Jinshi's radar xD she's epic.

Meg

I remember thinking "please, slap that retard" and I was so satisfied when she actually did and even went on a rant 🤣. That's too when I got she was built different.

KaijinGarou

Episode 4 is what skyrocketed Maomao to one of my top favourite shoujo heroines of all time. The sheer badassery! 😍 That slap was so satisfying lol. I get why Jinshi is so smitten xD Great reaction as always guys!

Meg

I work tomorrow early in the morning, you monsters 🤣

KaijinGarou

Now this is epic

Zeli
