Be a tiny bit careful for information drops with incomplete shows <3 Some adaptations like to give more explicit information at different times, since in manga form it may seem best to deliver it through text, yet during translation to anime mangaka/authors may have a better way they woulda shown it given animation is present,

It was never directly addressed but the condition for doing so is that the target needs to have a high affinity for spirits and not be in a contract with one. That's how Subaru got taken over.
