Concubines also served as representatives for their regions and as another influence outside of the male courts for pushing their respective agendas. They were also instrumental in many business ventures because of their high level of visibility and the social pedestal they stood on. For instance, they could serve as models wearing lavish clothing and jewelry. Where did that concubine get the silk? Does she come from a family of jewel craftsman? Is she from a wealthy merchant family that has connections to goods from far away kingdoms?

The concubine's purpose is solely for the Emperor's entertainment and pleasure. There can be hundreds of concubines by a single Emperor but of course, he will for sure choose favourites depending on their beauty, where they come from, talents, how they perform in the bedroom, etc. They each have their own homes in the Rear Palace. The concubines have ranks and the favourites are usually the highest ranking while others go by their whole lives not being visited by the Emperor even once. Among the favourite concubines, one could rise higher if she gives birth to a male child especially if the baby is the first male child of the Emperor as they are considered heir to the throne.
