2024-05-04 11:38:07 +0000 UTCCultural lesson: Garfiel being 14 plays into a common Japanese manga/anime/IRL trope, of the kid with "chuunibyou," or "Eigth-Grader syndrome." Pretty sure it happens everywhere, but the Japanese are the ones who coined a name for the phenomenon. It's when awkward teens, especially boys, are overactive with their imagination and passion, and they try to blend fantasy with reality. As a result, they do [cringey and edgy] things that they think makes them look and sound cool. Things like wearing unnecessary accessories or eyepatches or bandages when there's no need for them to, claiming to have a "separate secret totally awesome hidden identity," or "secret power I have trouble controlling," or putting on a tough act of being a badass who spouts cryptic lines or quotes. Basically injecting their favourite fantasy traits into their real everyday lives. Subaru with his cringey poses and speeches is an example of this actually, lol. In AOT, this was poked fun at with Eren, when he name dropped the show in S3 with a "cool pose." Armin, Levi, Hange, and Zachary implied his sudden [traumatic] loud outbursts was him being in his "awkward edgy teen" phase. The tonal juxtaposition of that joke in the series is hilarious of course. Thought I'd bring this up because it's a fairly common trope in anime.

Dropped the series once years ago because of that, and I actually was gonna drop the show after the cringe dialogue in episode 15... there was a lot to disagree with and it was hard to watch for me. But after realizing the writer repeatedly shows and counters these cringe moments of Subaru's many times, I decided to stick with it. And damn, the remaining episodes are great. Looking forward to seeing you two react to them. Episode 15 @ 3:00 Lol thank you. I can never trust Otto after seeing his "true colours" when he threw Subaru away before. Even if they try to make him seem like a Chad now, I saw what happens when SHTF. There's still a huge disconnect for me and mistrust despite the story trying to make me see him in a different light.

I'd like to see Ange's victory pose post being transported into a fantasy world as a 16-year-old or whatever. ;) Yes, Subaru is using the Sloth Witch Factor that CHOSE him after he beat Betelgeuese. Also keep in mind, that he is "returning by death" due to the Envy Witch Factor, no? So that's 2.

Yes, Otto threw Subaru off his carriage when they were being chased by the White Whale but remember: Otto didn't even know who Subaru was back then, and ALSO the Whale was specifically attracted to Subaru's "stench." C'mon, now. That was a completely reasonable move. Ange calls the dialogue "cringe" but I think Buddy just needs to open up and get in touch with his emotions and accept the embarrassing honesty and obsession that is Subaru! lol. I'm sure some of that "cringe" is the difficulty of translating from Japanese to English.

2024-04-14 11:05:41 +0000 UTCBtw, as for the cringe dialogue, mostly from Subaru's end: I'm pretty sure it's intentional when you look at how not cringe some characters are, such as Ram etc. The reasoning is likely that he's been someone who hasn't really developed social skills as one normally would by socializing with peers/others - as suggested from the first trial with his parents where we see he's a shut-in who couldn't quite move on from his childhood past - in combination with a lot of behavioural habits influenced by manga/anime/games, which at times can be cringy. It's something you can see out today in society.

In the intro of 15 Ange says "they couldn't get into the graveyard" which isn't true. Subaru lost his right to undergo the Trial in 13 or 14 remember? Hence begging Roswall to call off the mansion attack and saying he didn't have the ability to undergo the trial anymore. That being said, I actually have seen re zero several times, one of my fav anime and it has likely saved my life. Yet, I don't recall them saying the trial was only active inside x hours for some reason, but it's easy to assume that anyone can enter the graveyard until x time, which is likely sunset/rise.

If someone doesn't like walls of text of my breakdown attempt? please feel free to buy a fidget spinner and go spin somewhere else :) i write this for those that sometimes add on to my thoughts, because it lets me see different perspectives: ok, the translations can sometimes be cringe, but i think what subaru was sayingabout the "slender" comment was not specifically about her being slender in body, or sexy speciically, but i think it was supposed to be "Slender" as in "graceful". I only call this out because there's a similar word in Arabic too that means both graceful and slender, it's like what you would describe a ballerina for example. She's slender and may have a nice body, long arms and legs but it's supposed to mean that she's graceful in her movements etc. but we always forget that he's 15 years old or something... how cringe were we all at 15 lol. it's teenage love, it doesnt always have to make sense. And i think the main thing that we need to understand is that Emilia's losing herself to her own memories, and she thought that if she can ignore those extra memorie and just rely on the people around her to tell her who she is.. basically she doesnt know who she is without the people around her, and with her family being gone like her "Mother", and now puck, and subaru disappearing, she felt alone with her memories and she's angry because she doesnt know who she is, but she's also confused why subaru's not angry for her just disappearing and not thinking of what she means to them... see, she's feeling guilty that those who loved her the most, she forgot they even existed... but this is 2 way, does it mean that if you are not around someone that you'll forget them? like subaru and puck etc. but in reality, the whole problem here is expectations. She's expecting HERSELF to be the picture perfect girl that subaru had of her, because she thinks he either is nice to her because she's pathetic, or he's delusional and thinks she's perfect when she knows she isn't. If you think about it, what she was feeling at the time is the exact feeling that subaru felt when people had so many expectations of subaru being "his father's son." , and he lost his own identity in the shadows of the "perfect image of his father", similar to emilia being lost in the shadow of the perfect image of who she's expected to be, either the good perfect ruler or woman, or even the evil portrayal of second hand version of the witch of envy. She's never "emilia." just subaru was never "subaru." and it took subaru's mother to snap him out of it, that it's good to have expectations and want to be better but subaru was also half his mother too, and emilia is also half half (she even said it, but it's not just half elf half human but also it's just meaning of she's not "pure" or "perfect" she's a mixed bag of good and bad, and so is subaru, and what she sees in herself and what others see in her is also half half, she needs to find a balance... and before, she used to struggle if she's good or selfish vs what others expect of her, but with her new memories, she lost her spectrum of where she stands... subaru, like how his mother reminded him, made sure to remind emilia that she can be a full mess and people will stand by her regardless because they're not there because of the perfect image of emilia that they exppect of her, they're there FOR HER, good and bad... and she's finally understanding that subaru didnt see her as pathetic but also didnt see her as perfect, he saw her. and loved her. (cringe and all) but ultimately he's still by her side even when he's not IMMMEDIATELY sitting by her. In other words, he's supporting her while she stands, but he's not a CRUTCH for her, where she'd fall without him. They can both want to do things for others, but also are strong enough to stand on their own.. FOR the other.
