Such an emotional episode it hit me hard with the feels

2024-04-08 09:28:59 +0000 UTCI like to think of the magic system in Frieren like a musician playing music. You need some basics, like dexterous hands and some experience hearing good music (mana and some knowledge of how magic works) but past that mastery is largely in how you know what notes to play. Some might memorize great pieces (i.e. memorize spells and incantations) and that lets them make better music/magic quicker, but if that's all you do you're limited to what was done before. Others, often only the gifted can do this, just learn intuitively what good music should SOUND like. This can be slower, but allows you to do things others haven't ever heard before, make new music appropriate to the situation on the fly. Most do both to some degree. Ubel is on the extreme end of the second sort. She basically doesn't understand 'theory' at all, and so struggles to learn even basic spells by rote, but can do unanticipated things. It's a great magic system because it allows her to upend the system without just giving her a high power level. She doesn't do things better, just differently, and so hits experienced mages by surprise.

2024-03-31 02:12:00 +0000 UTCbit more simple and complicated than that, its not that she cant visualise beyond common logic, her logic is actually based in common sense, to her magic is illogical. to Übel's eye defensive spells is illogical to her, whats logical is that its a cloak made from cloth. Sense's hair is just hair "hair is meant to be cut". to her that is all based in logic and reality. and its best described as almost a blissful ignorance. while a straightforward basic defensive spell that everyone uses is that she can't visualise and no basis in reality its almost like an encryption she cant understand. to me that's the understanding i got, (not a manga reader) but she plays a crucial role in my favourite magic style in fantasy, just like one of my all time favourite worlds of Mushoku Tensei (jobless reincarnation) where there are incantations one must speak aloud to cast, but if you can fully visualise the spell you can cast them without saying the words which is the case in mushoku tensei, where the main character gets reincarnated into a normal fantasy world with the classic medieval fantasy era. which him coming from a Realistic present period where learning about monocles and atoms is a normal thing in school the MC can then visualise the actual molecules of water forming or the free electrons in air execrating causing fire. but things like in the MC previous life like biology isn't one of his interests so he cant visualise healing spells and therefore still has to cast certain spell like healing with the incantation. and that's a cool limit to a MC in a power fantasy that actually bring a logical rule in play. For example,as the episode mentioned, you are an ant and a giant is coming toward you, how easy it is for you to visualise that you can step on the giant and crush it? Ubel is actually able to visualise senarios beyond common logic. Sense's replica was powerful,it was obvious that she was stronger than them but Ubel didn't care, cause as long as she can visualise her spell cutting anything then she simply cuts anything. She visualised the "thorns" for hair on the replica as simple hair, easy to cut, and she cut her
