I love all the little details like Frieren says she's not really into accessories as she wears earrings to commemorate her master and keeps a simple ring for ~100 years that Himmel gave to her - maybe she can sense a sort of love/magic to those items too that she can't quite pin down yet :) Great reactions you guys this story is so awesome!

The time it took for her to even begin understanding the feelings of Himmel and her own emotions towards him is tragically decades past the lifespan of a normal human. And, from her perspective, it's fair given her long lifespan and learning to love people or things that are less than "one one hundredth" of her life...would be incredibly taxing on anyone's mental wellbeing :')

As the series goes on as long as you pay attention and try to understand the relationship between Himmel and Frieren it will gradually make more sense. Himmel had true love for Frieren. He could defeat the demon king but could not defeat the cruel difference in the time he could be alive with Frieren. This is my favorite episode of season 1. It was made perfectly. Frieren goes out at night to find the ring when you know she hates waking up for anything. Frieren saying "I am used to losing things" hits hard when she has such a long lifespan of course she is always losing everything including the people she is fond of. Himmel proposing his eternal love for frieren despite knowing that she doesn't understand what it means in that moment. This is the kind of romance I like.
