That might have a lot of truth in it. I mean, Bisky having a nen power that turns her aura into the greatest masseuse ever and her saying a line that it's the most useful power in the world might be Togashi fantasizing he had that power because his health issues stemmed from his back pains which he started having even as a young mangaka. That said, HxH manga and the 1999 version have been dark even from the beginning. It was only the 2011 version that fooled people into thinking it's a light hearted series because of the censorship and light hearted direction during the first arcs. Regarding Ange's question about whether the made up countries are based on some real world countries - the world map of HxH is loosely based on the real world map, where the continents have almost the same shape of countries or continents from the real world, just rearranged.
