Basically, you'll have a field around you and you'll sense anything within that field, even those who are using Zetsu or In. Zeno in episode 52 said that his En could reach up to 300 meters. Not directly stated, but Zilva said that the building's radius is 100m and Zeno scoffed and said his En could reach 3x that. In comparison, Nobunaga's En, while we weren't given specifics, doesn't seem to reach that far because he wasn't able to detect Gon and Killua while they were still in the building.

Like chrollo needing to keep his book open while he fights…if he’s a weak nen user in terms of the basics and is too slow or physically weak, it’s a hard hard handicap. He needs to be at a certain base level of speed and fighting agility to even make something like that work even if he can steal abilities, or else he just dies before he can use whatever he steals. En was also introduced previously from the sword dude. It’s an advance application of ten and ren(?) and you can sense things within a zone. That’s what zeno was doing to detect where chrollo was.
