Personally, I can 100% justify the way he acted. Was it cringe ? Yes, of course but I honestly don't know how he can keep going after the enormous trauma he's been through. Because we can't handle cringe as viewers we seem to downplay how fucked up Subaru's arc is. Subaru dies horrible deaths again and again in order to save everyone, it's a miracle he's still standing and hasn't completely lost his mind. This moment in the show is basically the point when he's had enough. Subaru didn't listen to Emilia because if anything goes wrong during the ceremony, how is he supposed to know how to fix it ? Of course, he feels worthy to be called Emilia's knight. He doesn't have skill with a sword or with magic that much but he's done far more for Emilia than anyone else. The way Julius and Emilia reacted is logical since they don't know what Subaru truly goes through but the viewers' reactions always irritate me because they act like they wouldn't lose their mind crying for their mom is stuff like this happened to them.

Sarcaamstic

Yeah so basically Subaru was entirely cringe in these two episodes (mainly because of his selfishness and his inability to grasp the seriousness of the situation). I'm glad you guys were cringing throughout those scenes because you were supposed to be. This is good character development. Subaru had to realize that it's not all about him, he's not some "main character" (wink) in a video game, and that Emilia is her own person with her own needs and desires. Julius did a damn good thing in these two episodes.

The Great Santini

When did they say the dragon and the witch are in cahoots? I can't pinpoint where they said that lol.

The Great Santini

Great point. Would've added that in my first comment but it was getting a bit long ahahah Subaru is written to be us. No, probably he's way better than most of us would be in his shoes. Some people don't like that acknowledgment.

SilverWind

thing is, for subaru, he spent so much more time with emilia than emilia did with him. he also got to see her killed by elsa which is something emilia doesnt know and cant know. and then after waking up in mansion he gets to meet rem and ram and spend week with them only to get killed and go over and over. from his POV he lived through month or maybe longer of experience which is mostly traumatic and he both had to die multiple times AND see death of others he got to love and care for. From Emilia's POV they met week ago and in that short time he almost died twice and for some reasons he keep saying it was for her sake even though he cant explain why or how. As much as i hate how he acted in this episode as he was out of line with every move he made, i cant help but to understand where its coming from. Again, i am not justifying the way he acted cause i think even after going through everything he went through earning her trust should be more important that acting like a protagonist of a video game (in terms of, he needs to be center of attention in her world otherwise whats the point), but at least i can say i understand why he did wrong things he did

i also would like to add that premise of subaru being aware of being isekaid also gives the illusion that subaru shoulda coulda woulda be very relatable to viewers. if any of the viewers were found in same shoes as subaru they also would have same reaction he did in episode 1... "oh wow i got isekaid, this is cool, i always wanted this to happen to me but i never thought it could actually happen" or whatever, something of sort... to go from there to seeing this makes a strong conflict in that feeling of subaru being relatable as this episode gives strong vibe of second hand embarasment. rezero has amazing storyline but it is not one easily accepted if that make sense :D

Cayseron

Being several years older now, and also seeing your insights, I am definitely seeing, understanding, and appreciating the nuances in the writing and storytelling that I never noticed before. Pleasant surprise. Yeah, Subaru is a hurt traumatized reckless noble-intentioned misguided young man. You want him to be better but also cringe at how pathetic he's being, but also understand why he is the way he is. Very surprisingly grounded, and realistically ugly.

JN

Subaru really messed up but I understand him wanting to be there given he's the only one who can undo things if they go wrong and that meeting looked like it had high chances of something going wrong. Still, if he just had gone there and stayed quiet, Emilia would have probably let it slide, but he had to go all out like that...

KaijinGarou

Even though they wasted too much time on it, I liked that girl went "save us the exposition dump, we're here because we already know that". Quite the self-aware moment xD.

KaijinGarou

Oh that's right, another cat character xD I'm having Steins Gate flashbacks. They're gonna have a blast πŸ˜‚

Can't wait for the next 2. "NO GA FURUERU"

Subaru doubling down on the grave he dug for himself was truly one of the anime moments of all time

I think going through so much trauma, trying so hard - it seems to be part of what makes him feel entitled to Emilia's favour. Something she has no idea of and can't given something is stopping him from speaking. It's frustrating as a viewer and I'm often very turned off by tragedy that involves supernatural/magical elements when it's done cheaply, which is why I like re:zero as it does it well!

Roboton

I think you're right. We like identifying ourselves with the hero/protagonist in these Isekai stories because it's a great escape from reality. I think part of it is the author is trying to explore the issues Subaru has and in doing so, quite well IMO, does it in a way that breaks the illusion of the "perfect" hero; Not that Subaru quite falls into the category, but rather in the sense that the protagonist is always right/just. It's even more difficult because Emilia voices sentiments that we in our modern world also hold, so it feels extra "wrong" when he's repudiated by people holding what we would consider an outdated system of beliefs. Problem is that that's not where Subaru is mistaken in his actions and a lot of people seem to miss that or not like that he makes this other mistake of stepping out of line. It's grating to also see him double down like that, but realistic to me in a sense when it concerns matters of pride or simply feeling attacked on a personal level.

Roboton

100%. Juliues realised what Subaru's stepping out of line as well as what being so dismissive of the title of a knight - in front of so many knights - could have lead to. He took initiative to let the other knights see Subaru get his "just deserts" without killing him or hurting him too bad, something others might not have had the restraint to do. Julius is a good one. Subaru just doubled down when he shouldn't have and it became a matter of pride for him.

Roboton

When I first watched ep 13 I was just like damn subaru. Now I know he's still a kid and experiencing so many aggressive deaths and having to figure out way to avoid it is a lot but damn I feel like he's always just so blinded by the love he his for emilia

Dune

spoiling is crazy

obito6ix

Subaru’s evolving relationship with Julius is one of the most satisfying character arcs in the anime. And of course, you can’t feel proper satisfaction from a journey to the PEAK unless you’re starting at the bottom!

Graham

Quite the christmas present we got πŸ˜‚ and a very christmasy pair of episodes

So here they are. The dreaded episodes where a lot of people started disliking the show, maybe because they felt that discomfort when watching Subaru's actions unfold and translated it into "don't like the show". Loved your analysis about what he did, the characters in this show are complex. Basically all of them. Also, a couple things you seemed to struggle with: the witch and the dragon are NOT on the same side, the dragon is considered a benign entity, but Lugunica (the kingdom where the show takes place) is like forever indebted with the dragon because of his help and this does not sit well with some people. When you talked about potentially different people being summoned by different witches, I quote Beatrice "The witch of Envy devoured the other six witches who bore the name of the other capital sins. In this world when you refer to a witch you're always referring to the witch of Envy, Satella" So there WERE seven witches at some point in the past, but nowadays the six that were devoured have seen their importance drastically decreased. Also, a little thing that you're supposed to pick up in these two episodes but you skipped past because you were too focused on other details: the old man that was with Felix said that his name is Wilhelm van Astrea. And van Astrea is also Reinhard's family name, they call him that numerous times in the castle.

next week will be episode 14 and 15. Cant wait for 15 to happen

tracee miasco

Welp...we gotta wait another weekπŸ’€

JsonKim

He lost it at the end of episode 13 and lashed out at Emilia because of all the deaths, all the frustration of not being able to tell anyone. He’s an incredibly traumatized person at this point in the show

Nah I’d win

not sure if you caught the last names of reinhart and the mysterious horse-carriage man-servant that was being bribed with the tea by subaru :)

Cyber

It's always so hard for me to watch these episodes. I just feel like my body is in full cringe the whole time.

Steven

I appreciate that the both of you are at least a bit more understanding towards Subaru with how he reacted. I think on one hand, it's clear that in this circumstance, he was wrong. On the other hand though, it's such a crucial moment for his character. He's a very interesting and complex character, and I think it's important to acknowledge that he's not immune to being an asshole or immune to being selfish sometimes. It just provides a platform for him to grow.

Gabriel Barott

ty for uploading both at sunday. Happy holidays!

tracee miasco

I liked your thoughts on subaru's breakdown, very insightful. Merry christmas eve!

SomeChosen One

Re watching this really makes me appreciate Subaru's journey towards becoming someone strong internally. It reminds me of Vinland Saga. I think Julius saved his life there.

Shaw

Btw the old man's name was given in this episode: Wilhelm van Astrea. Also that whole "this guy has seen death" is an anime trope where some people can tell that someone's killed a lot of people or seen deaths.

Shaw

Next 5 episode upload same time please

Aptos Meta

Been meaning to say this since ep4, but it's easier to pronounce Ram as 'rum'. That's at least how it's pronounced in the anime. Anywaysss, Merry Christmas Carlie & Ange!

Merry Christmas and so begins the confusion with one character. It's gonna be good
