A couple of people already called t his out, but what subaru is doing is that he's realizing that every time he tries to tell anyone about the curse, the scent of the witch goes up on him as a lingering effect. He's already had that witch's "effect" on him to return by death and not to say anything about it, so he was intentionally abusing the side effects of it to raise his scent and draw the mabeasts in (and rem in procecss) by acting as a more noticeable and smelly bait. He even does it again which makes the mabeasts and rem freak out more from the scent. Think of it like it's a pheromone thing that entices those who can smell that scent to seek it out because of the power that hides behind it, it sounds like a nice meal for mana/munchies almost. My personal theory about why Rem seems to be impacted by the scent but Ram isn't (this is a theory, i dont actually know, but based on this episode's reactions), Ram said that the demon's horn is used to draw in Mana and to use it from the surroudnings and get stronger, so if Ram has no horn, maybe she's not getting those same urges that Rem does... Almost like a neutered dog for the lack of better analogy: but a neutered or spayed dog is less affected by other dogs that are in heat or giving off scents .

2023-12-17 04:04:41 +0000 UTCJust to clear things up, the curse did not kick in before they entered the forest that's just what happens when he tries to tell people he's been coming back to life, and the reason he did that was to make the witch's smell on him stronger to lure in the mabeasts, and the many curses on him aren't from the witch they're from all the mabeasts that bit him in the last episode (each bite is presumably a curse), so the witch hasn't been cursing him more.
