that fight always confused me. hisoka should be way more powerfull than kastro in terms of power scaling (considering everything we see afterwards) and we even learn kastro lost cause he overloaded his nen (he was trying to master two techniques far from his specialty so he "depleted" his nen and started moving more slowly and make more obvious moves once he failed to finish off hisoka quickly and fight continued for too long). in one hand all facts we are given should mean hisoka should have won that fight easily. on the other hand hisoka sacrificed his own hand in order to defeat him in what seem to be more than fair fight. i understand hisoka could have willingly lose the hand knowing machi will treat him later but what if machi was not part of eqation, would he be more serious and defeat kastro without losing a hand? it is just so weird fight all in all

To my understating Enhancers are not exactly "the best" category, it's more that Nen has a multitude of applications (from turning energy into gum to knowing when someone is lying) and Enhancers tend to be more directed at fighting. I think Kurapika is disappointed he isn't an Enhancer because it's the most suited category for fighting under circumstances you can't control, since being a strong Enhancer most of the times means having stronger physical capabilities. Since he wants to hunt down the most dangerous criminals in this world (which he know none of their powers) it would be best to have a flexible power that could deal with all of them. That said thought, under the right conditions anyone can win as long as they are in a simillar level to their opponents, think about Hisoka vs Kastro, Hisoka didn't out-brawn Kastro, he was sneaky and created a situation where he was in control.

depends of what you mean by inspired. bleach and tite kubo is what inspired gege to start drawing and become manga creator. JJK is factually based more on hxh, yu-yu hakusho and naruto respectively. yes as a huge fan of bleach he admited that he might have been nudged to make some resemblances to bleach but Gege is constantly going out of the way to say he is actively trying to prove a point that jjk is nothing like bleach because he thinks of himself inferior to tite kubo and thinks he could never be able to draw on same level and would ultimately fail if he tries. TLDR: no jjk is not inspired by bleach but in a way without bleach there would be no jjk.

I find with nen the simplest way to think about it is ‘it’s not what you have, it’s how you use it’. Nen potential & aura aside (ie: Gon & Killua’s 1/10,000,000 talent), the actual application of hatsu in the moment matters. That’s why I like how we have the Kastro vs Hisoka fight so early and the breakdown - it immediately shows that despite Kastro being such a strong enhancer (including, most likely, having more raw offensive strength based on his Tiger Bite), Hisoka as a transmuter neatly controlled & finished the fight once he figured Kastro out.

Mangakas and artists in general have many inspirations, and in interviews with Gege Akutami, the most prominent works that have been mentioned are HxH and Bleach. And you can see that both really have their mark on JJK. The cursed techniques being unique to each person and having some conditions was definitely inspired by nen, even Gojo showing to Yuji how cursed techniques work using two cans or bottles was reminiscent of Wing showing Sushi how nen can be dangerous by cutting a can of soda with a piece of paper, and I think domain expansions were inspired by bankais in Bleach.

On the discussion for episodes 29-30, Carlie wondered if nen users would also be able to manipulate other people, and here we just got shown manipulators taking control of people, animals, and even just auras dressed as ninjas. So good thinking there Carlie! Also love that you went back to the part where Kurapika's teacher was explaining the percentages to him. And yes, I hope you write down Hisoka's nen personality traits. He says it's unreliable, but like zodiac signs or blood type traits, it can hit the mark for a lot of people.

From what I remember, there isnt necessarily one nen category being better than the other and it all depends on the user. The only thing Kurapika's teacher explained was that enhancers have the best well-rounded mix of offense and defense whereas conjurers can highly specialize into either offense or defense. Enhancers are generally more limited to pure strength and physical/direct combat (although they could somewhat branch into other categories as explained in the show, but it wouldn't be as effective). On the other hand, Hisoka (as a transmuter) or Kurapika (as a conjurer) might have worse well-rounded physical strength than enhancers like Gon, but have more creative flexibility in both combat and non-combat situations (think of Bungee Gum or Kurapika's "lie detector" chain in this episode).
