Honestly the words “you are my special” playing felt masterful to me! That opening had made me feel tense and apprehensive for 10ish episodes now and the second it started playing I burst into tears.

2023-12-02 21:22:57 +0000 UTCHAHA wow - I can’t lie I don’t fully remember, but I think the consensus is that megumi is FAR too willing to throw his life away at any threat 💀

2023-11-19 22:10:00 +0000 UTC"Yuji you are a strong Kid, help people!" The curse Yuji was given by his grandfather. Which curse is worse? The Curse to Help people or Sukuna? Both cause Yuji torment. FYI, there is a great vid on twitter of Yuki's VA acting that last scene out while on the ground just like Yuji. He nails the torment and horror Yuji must be feeling in that moment.

2023-11-19 20:33:08 +0000 UTCDidn't he also do it against Hanami once once the roof top then Inumaki stopped him and then once in the river right before Todo and Itadori showed up?

2023-11-19 20:22:50 +0000 UTCSolid discussion guys. At this point, after seeing Megumi summon Mahoraga/Makora, I'm just as curious as Sukuna in Megumi's potential. He has a Domain Expansion, and on top of that, we now know he can summon the most powerful shikigami, albeit he can't control it. Ange calling someone "Dickhead" is always funny (I swear, every Australian loves this word), and Carlie calling dibs on MVP for Nanami 😂 The animation was insane! Major props to the Mappa staff who are basically working in a "black" company. I could be over analyzing, but I'm pretty sure that there were moments during the fight, specifically the 2nd half of the fight, where the staff had to cut some corners. Nothing bad by ANY means. JJK has too many good fights, man.

2023-11-18 21:03:20 +0000 UTCThe other day as the wind was blowing autumn leaves and cars drove past in the neighborhood I swore I heard in the faint distance a quiet “ohhhh my Godddddd”. Guess it was Carlie seeing Nanami all the way in Australia 🤣

2023-11-18 20:25:26 +0000 UTCI ugly laughed when Carlie immediately said “Nanami MVP.” 😂 But side note this episode was beyond amazing. Like words cannot describe. It had so many moments and hit so many levels emotionally.

2023-11-18 20:17:23 +0000 UTCYuuup you are correct! He went to use it and then did the domain instead. I went back and looked at season 1 moments to see. It’s crazy how often he almost used that 😅
Kat
2023-11-18 20:15:43 +0000 UTCSo Sukuna's technique is slicing, simple but lethal. There are two kinds of slicing, you can see them as one is physical attack and one is curse energy attack. About if Megumi is aware of what he was about to unleash, I think he is fully aware how powerful that thing is, it only brings so much destruction because it was fighting Sukuna. It would disappear after killing whoever is involved in the ritual so if it was facing someone else, it's not gonna need to destroy a city to kill that person, that's my view of it.
Jason
2023-11-18 19:53:22 +0000 UTCyeah i feel like thats his whole arc on season one, that he was willing to off himself to win by summoning Mahoraga until he finally understands what Gojo's advice means (dying to win =/= risking your life to win), which leads to him developing Chimera Shadow Garden.
JuancaMX
2023-11-18 19:40:50 +0000 UTCBtw, you really should revisit what Gojo said to Megumi when he was training him in a flash back in season 1, he said Megumi doesn't know how to go full force or something. And after this episode you will understand that conversation more.
Jason
2023-11-18 19:40:14 +0000 UTCDoesn't he almost uses it too in the fight against one of Sukuna's fingers under the bridge? Right before remembering Gojo telling him that dying to win and risking his life to win are not the same thing, then he does an unfinished domain expansion for the first time. I roughly remember him saying the incantation and the curse getting shook.

2023-11-18 19:36:37 +0000 UTCIt was in every fight Megumi ever had.

2023-11-18 19:03:31 +0000 UTCBtw it was episode 5 of season 1 when Megumi fought Sukuna. He was about to summon Mahoraga but opted to talk to Yuji instead.

2023-11-18 18:02:28 +0000 UTCYes! Another fun fact is that one of the animators who animated a scene with sukuna inside one of the buildings in this episode, the guy apparently forgot the floor plans for the building so he used studio mappa's main office building's layout as a model in this episode and it gets destroyed. Ironic, considering the controversy surrounding their working conditions.

2023-11-18 17:50:10 +0000 UTCI'm sure someone mentioned it, but Megumi actually almost unleashed this monster shikigami THREE TIMES in season one!!! the first was his very first encounter with Sukuna (ep 2 that u mentioned), the second was during the first-year trio's first mission when Itadori lost control of Sukuna for a bit, and the third was when Todo was first introduced and started beating him up. And in this instance, he "forced" Ponytail to be part of the ritual - so there were only two ways the shikigami would disappear: if the shikigami was killed (clearly not an easy task), OR after he killed Ponytail, but the death of Ponytail would also kill Megumi. That's why Sukuna bothered to save Ponytail lol, only to keep Megumi from passing. So, in short, Megumi needs some therapy cuz our poor boy was just WAITING for a moment to sign his life away 😭. He has major "if I'm gonna lose, YOU'RE gonna lose with me" energy with this move, haha. But if he could become the first ever to get that shikigami under control, he'd be SUPER powerful - which hugely plays into why Gojo and Sukuna, two OP characters, have such high hopes for him and speaking of therapy...poor itadori, somebody give him a hug

2023-11-18 16:51:21 +0000 UTC@Tyreesh Simmons (No spoilers) Depends how it’s used, im sure you already know what I mean and how it was used as a one shot kill move, the other Gojo guy in the past is 100% a bum compared to Satoru for not taking out Maho.

2023-11-18 15:29:32 +0000 UTCBasically Sukuna's technique is slicing and his domain expansion is endless slicing. However, in exchange to not having a barrier to trap someone inside, Sukuna can further increase his domain up to 200 metres. Mahoraga's technique is adapting to any technique, so the more the fight goes on the less damage it get. That's why after activating his domain Sukuna use his fire ability (which is still a mystery) to defeat Mahoraga.

2023-11-18 14:42:49 +0000 UTCI see that you guys mentioned the opening song in the reaction when it was playing over Yuuji's mental breakdown. This was actually a genius use of the song because if you actually check the lyrics of the song, the song is sung from the perspective of a cursed spirit. So essentially what it boils down to is that Yuuji is being laughed at, and mocked by Sukuna as he breaks down at the sight of what his body had done. Sukuna has to be my favorite new gen villain in all of anime! He truly is the embodiment of the word "evil".

2023-11-18 14:41:56 +0000 UTCWhoever that Gojo clan guy was, he’s a bum compared to Satoru lowkey. Crazy that the most powerful move of the ten shadows technique has never been used properly in all of history and was only used as a sort of kamikaze move.
LuciusArtoriusCastus
2023-11-18 14:39:44 +0000 UTCMegumi actually says Makora if you listen closely. Ig the Japanese characters can be translated in multiples different ways so Makora and Mahoraga are both correct. And I don’t think he was gonna use Maho on todo
LuciusArtoriusCastus
2023-11-18 14:36:31 +0000 UTCHe’s also about to use it against toji last episode before toji kills himself. He does the stance
Virgil Hawkins
2023-11-18 14:34:47 +0000 UTCSo basically Gojo was implying to Megumi that he could have the potential to be on the same level as Gojo if not beat him since the clan heads killed each other back in the days using both their specific hereditary techniques. Megumi can summon Mahoraga as many times as possible in order to subjugate(tame) it which is called a ritual. A ritual to subjugate Mahoraga can be done with multiple people but then the subjugation would be void (meaning Megumi would not be able o use Mahoraga) since he himself would have to defeat Mahoraga to be able to use it. Since no one in history has ever subjugated it (not even the Zenin clan head that killed himself and a Gojo clan head with six eyes/limitless), it was basically a suicide move for Megumi since Mahoraga will kill the people involved in the ritual (Megumi and ponytail dickhead) in order to terminate the ritual and not be tamed. Before summoning it, Megumi states that he thinks the Zenin clan head used Mahoraga the same way (i.e. suicide move) by forcing Gojo clan head in the ritual with himself and implying that Mahoraga killed both the Zenin clan head and Gojo clan head.

2023-11-18 14:26:30 +0000 UTCThis isn’t true. He wasn’t going to use it against todo. There’s nothing that suggests that he would. Also I don’t know why you’re calling the subs trash when the voice actor literally said "makora"

2023-11-18 13:38:28 +0000 UTCThere's an inside joke within JJK fandom that Megumi will try to summon Mahoraga at any "inconvenience". Gojo ate his desert? Megumi: "With this treasure.. I summon" Itadori was too loud and woke him up? Megumi: 👊🏻👊🏻
poisonivybag
2023-11-18 13:32:58 +0000 UTCSukuna has two types of “slashing” attacks “cleave” which targets things with curse energy and “dismantle” targets things without cursed energy and his domain basically just blasts everything within its area with those two techniques until sukuna stops his domain. Now for Megumi’s ritual its to have control over mahoraga because as of right now he doesn’t. He can bring people into the ritual to help fight maho but doing so would nullify the ritual afterwards. So in this case he just used it to take blondie with him since he was dying already anyway. If you guys dont wanna give MVP to Sukuna then give it to Mahoraga because that thing is a big problem 😂

2023-11-18 13:32:28 +0000 UTCI hope they give the animators a long break after this and advertise the rest of the Shibuya incident as a movie (ex. Shibuya Incident Part 2) I think that would be pretty cool. However, I am not familiar with the business side of things so I don’t know how that would affect the studio from a monetary standpoint. PS. I am happy to see Nanami aka HIM is back!

2023-11-18 13:24:04 +0000 UTCFun fact : one of the animators of this episode, said that this episode is about 30% of the desired result! But because of Mappa Shity schedule, they couldn't go all out….imagine what will they do if they just got enough time?

2023-11-18 13:23:10 +0000 UTC-JJK pulls a lot of it's narrative elements from Buddhism and Japanese Buddhist/Shinto* Mythology. The very nature of the power system is a metaphor for suffering. Sourcerer's are analogues for "buddhist warrior monks" who have such control of their negative energies that they channel it into powerful abilities that allow them to exercise curses. People who are not as aware of how to control their negative energy, leak it into the world and create curses. This led to Geto's ultimate decision to "destroy the monkeys," because Geto was a very kind person who became warped by the ego and corruption and sin of the "monkeys". (In Buddhism, we often refer to the unquieted mind that is caught in a spiral of suffering as the "Chattering Monkey Brain.") Also fun to note, Toji and Gojo's fight is an allusion to a mythological story about Son Goku (the King of the Monkeys - aka. toji the king of zero negative curse energy) and Buddah (Gojo awakened). -Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga This is the "final summon" of the 10 Shadows Technique. In order to have control over this summon, Megumi would need to "subjugate it" by defeating it in combat or however he can figure out how to. This requires a summoning subjugation ritual in which you can involve other beings in the rite. The rite will not end until Mahoraga has destroyed it's own summoners. It wouldnt go rampant and destroy the city. It would simply kill Megumi and Ponytail Dickhead. Then it would vanish. (If my understanding is correct). But because it didnt get to Ponytail Dickhead in time, the rite continued and Megumi was stuck in suspended animation death. [This also appears to be Gege's nod to Anima from Final Fantasy X. In this game, summoners must call forth their "aeons" (their shikigami) and defeat them (subjugate) them in order to be able to resummon them and have control over them. Anima the final aeon appears very very very similar to Mahoraga when it also appears. (Ie. Covered in wrappings with chains holding it down, both hands bound, eyes covered, etc.)] In Japanese Buddhism, The Mahoraga are one of the eight classes of deities (aṣṭasenā) that are said to protect the Dharma (the eight spoked wheel on Mahoraga's back). They are described as huge subterranean serpents who lie on their sides and rotate the earth, which occasionally causes earthquakes.[2] Like the kinnara, the mahoraga are also associated with music. They are understood as being associated with large serpents such as pythons, while the nāgas are more closely related to the cobra.[3] According to the Śariputraparipṛcchā Sūtra (T. 1465), one is reborn as a mahoraga as a result of practicing generosity and upholding the Dharma, while being inclined toward anger. The 8-Fold Path in Buddhism is "the dharma" and is represented by "the wheel of dharma" or "dharma." It is the main symbol of Buddhist teachings. Each spoke of the wheel represents a particular value a being should uphold in order to "walk the path towards enlightenment." This wheel also represents rebirth of the soul into body. If you follow the 8 fold path and manage to escape the wheel of rebirth, you have succeeded and achieved nirvana. You have "extinguished" yourself, which is the goal of Buddhism. To end "becoming." Mahoraga in the show, has this wheel on its back, and each time it "dies" to an ability, the wheel turns, reincarnating it, but bringing it back with that particular evolutionary adaptation that previously killed it. Also, to summon it, Megumi says an incantation about sacred treasures ringing and swinging. There is a mythological tale of 10 sacred treasures in Buddhism as well, but this I am not too familiar with so I wont talk about it. I need to look into it more. The only way to destroy it is in one shot with something it has no experience with. Introducing - Malevolent Shrine. (Not kitchen, that was a translation error that was too literal.) Malevolent Shrine essentially establishes a zone of 200m around Sukuna in which everything will be repeatedly hit with both his curse slice dissection and physical dissection abilities over and over until they have been reduced down to their constituent parts. It is a literal dismantling of all matter in the area. I am an anime watcher and do not understand Fuga yet, but it seems to "open a gate" maybe the gates of "hell" who knows? Fuga also may simply mean "refinement." But to me, it looked like he essentially 1. Cuts and slices and dissects every bit of matter in the area. All chemical bonds are severed. Everything is dismantled on an atomic and subatomic level. 2. He then refines it, and puts everything under heat pressure. Sorta reminds me of how Star life cycles behave. Anyway, shits wild bruh
Matt Ostovitz
2023-11-18 13:23:08 +0000 UTC"Malevolent Shrine's guaranteed-hit ability can be made to relentlessly slash apart anything until nothing but dust remains of what has caught in the effective range, via Sukuna's two types of slashing attacks: Cleave and Dismantle." And then to finish it off with Fuga ouff.. What makes it more OP is that it cannot be destroyed like a normal Domain Expansion because of the lack of an enclosed barrier.

2023-11-18 12:41:39 +0000 UTCI love the fact that they teased Megumi summoning Mahoraga like 5 times in the first season and even in the scene with Yuji right after he ate the first finger. I got excited the same way Ange did the moment he took that stance :D

2023-11-18 12:27:06 +0000 UTCThe music throughout the episode and especially when Sukuna opened his domain was insane. This was cinema, and it’s apparently rushed. 2023-11-18 12:20:53 +0000 UTCNow that the GOAT mahoraga (or Makora ig) has been revealed, here are all the times Megumi tried to summon it in season 1, effectively almost committing suicide: 1. In the very beginning of the show when we’re introduced to yuji and he eats Sukunas finger and Sukuna is in control for a couple seconds. Megumi is about to summon Mahoraga but stops the summon when Gojo arrives. 2. The next occasion is in ep 5 iirc when Sukuna takes out Yujis heart to hold him hostage and Megumi is forced to fight Sukuna. Sukuna notices Megumi is about to summon something crazy and encourages him to do it since he wants to see it. I could be wrong but I think this is why yuji decided to take over and kill himself, because he knew Megumi was about to commit suicide. 3. Third, when Hanami invaded the exchange event, Megumi and Kamo fight Hanami but aren’t doing much damage so Megumi decided to bring out Maho, but Inumaki stops him. 4. Again, also at the exchange event against Hanami 💀 this time Maki stops him and they tag out and let Yuji and Todo fight Hanami instead. 5. The last time is toward the end of the season, when the main trio were fighting the special grade finger bearer curse and Chosos brothers under the bridge. Megumi is split up from the other two and is fighting a special grade on his own and losing. The curse notices that Fushiguro is about to summon something devious and jumps back in fear. Many people think the curse was afraid of Megumi or his domain, but he was actually scared of Maho. He almost summons Maho but has a flashback to his training with Gojo and remembers what he was told. “Dying to win, and winning by dying aren’t the same” (or something like that idk). He stops his summon and tries his domain for the first time.
