2023-11-20 03:22:22 +0000 UTCI'll never get over Eugene's death ;;w;;) he was a minor character, but I think he made a lot on impact on Shin because he sees both Lena and Rei in Eugene. A small but easy to miss scene from this episode: When Eugene was asking for Shin to grab his locket (where Nina's picture was), Shin made sure to wipe his hand first so he wouldn't get blood on the locket/picture. It's a very easy "blink and you'll miss it" scene, but I think it was very sweet of Shin to do that. Regarding that particular scene in the light novel, this was how it went: Shin found Eugene inside his machine and he took him out of the machine's cockpit. Eugene, who was still conscious, knew that he was already beyond saving, yet was still thankful for Shin for getting him out of the Vanagadr. He said he doesn’t feel any pain so it meant that Shin administered painkillers (specifically said to be morphine) on him. Eugene then asked Shin to promise him to watch over Nina... and Shin then asked Ernst to keep tabs on Nina since he's still in the battlefield.

RIP to the legend. In the same episode, we were fully introduced to another fellow legend, Grethe Wenzel. It's awesome that Grethe and Frederica set up the memorial for all of Shin's dead comrades. Not only that, but they brought back Fido, ANOTHER legend, from the dead. I swear I can't say Frederica without saying "of the Frederacy" now 😂 You guys touched on this in the discussion, but Frederica tries to act like an adult because of her royal upbringing and the responsibility she takes on for her people. While it's to show that she is a character to take seriously in the story, we all can't help but love the duality of her royal and childish sides. She really is the best mascot for the squad, or as she likes to call herself, "The Goddess of Victory". Both of you are so cautious to which characters to get attached to now; saying things like, "watch her head get blown off" and "watch [Shin headpat Frederica's] dead body" 😯. Ya'll are skeptical of the writer's ability to off characters at any time, and I get it. Btw good catch on seeing Shin was the first to notice the Legion closing up on their base before their alarms sounded. That "see you later" though 😭

There acutally some more German words in this show. Which i remember right now: Löwe (The Tank) = Lion Ameise (Regular Drone) = Ant Grauwolf (another Tank) = Grey wolves

2023-11-13 15:20:52 +0000 UTCSoldiers are incredibly superstitious, the slightest bit of perceived luck, good or bad, can drastically effect the morale of a unit. The 86, who had a chance to not fight, and instead returned to the battlefield are already seen as loose cannons. On top of that, the units they're attached to have a high attrition rate, lending an air that they don't care about who they're fighting with, as long as they get to destroy the Legion. While it might be seen as a positive to have such strong fighters in your unit, if they have a reputation of being sole survivors or always fighting alone regardless of everyone else, it will engender a strong bit of superstition about them. Sure, Shin will make sure you don't turn into Legion parts, but it'd sure be a lot better if he saved you instead. Despite no longer being discriminated because of San Magnolia's trash policies, now they're being ostracized purely on their ruthless performance on the battlefield.

2023-11-13 09:36:31 +0000 UTCSo, interesting facts from this episode, no spoilers as usual: Why was Marcel so mad at Shin? The Eighty Six have a very selfish way of fighting, encouraged by the dog eat dog method the republic used them, they always seek and destroy legion, and don't really stop to help people. Marcel is mad because he feels if Shin focused more on protecting his comrades, rather than killing the enemy, Eugene may still be alive. (Whether this is true is unknown, but that's how he feels) Feldreẞ is the umbrella term used to refer to any human-operated multi-legged armored combat vehicle. Kind of like how we use 'tank'. So the Republic Juggernaut, and the Federacy Reginleif/Vánagandr are all 'Feldreẞ'. The ẞ in German is a hard S/Z sound so pronounce it like 'FeldreSZ' The instructor wasn't being a dick to shin by failing him, what he did was dangerous piloting regardless of the result, so he's not above the rules. (it was just a failure in that particular test). The new mech Shin was in is the 'Reginleif', its the test mech the female Colonel has been working on in R&D. As they discussed in officer training, many pilots died testing and using it, but the 86 were never hurt (due to their experience on the similar Juggernaught). The Vánagandr (the green mechs) are slower, but with better armour, pilot safety and bigger guns, and are easier to use so pilots prefer them. But they are vulnerable due to their slow speed, and can't chase the enemy easily. Nordlicht Squadron is a new test squadron comprised entirely of the new 'Reginleif' as a test ground to see if its worth mass production. Important fact often missed: The special Nordlicht Squadron, while having all five 86 members in it, also has about 15-20 Federacy pilots in it as well. So while the anime focuses mostly on the 86, whenever Nordlicht Squadron deploys, remember its about 20 mechs, not just the five 86. Its mentioned also that, the Major and Captain in command of Nordlicht Squadron have both died in battle, so now Shin is the commander as a Lieutenant. A very junior rank for such a position, sparking jealously amongst the Federacy troops.
