I love how you guys theorize!!!

juju

granted you said nothing wrong but you clearly missed the point of leorios character and also how none of what you said really disprove anything said prior here. i guess only thing you managed to prove with your comment is that MAYBE anime decided to change leorio's character in hopes to appeal to target audience that sees him the way you do. to rephrase it > leorio does questionable things and needed lot of help during exam so might as well make him a dumb fool that would never pass exam if not for help of others instead of the gigachad he was in manga. Maybe they thought leorio would be seen more like a brainless barbarian in the suit so they changed him to be more relatable to viewers but all in all it is still doing him dirty and if they gonna change the character then at least they need to have required skills to make story narrative translate properly. to make him the weakest link and borderline useless only to still use the scenes from manga where they praise his prowess just show their incompetence

Love your theories!!! And I agree with the previous comments regarding Leorio and some added/not included scenes! But afterwards the anime sticks to the manga so no worries. I've been suggesting watching this show for a long time so I'm so glad you've picked it up. It's my all time favorite so I hope you'll enjoy it

I don’t like to see arguments in the comments sections, so I am now going to delete all my comments below. @Astor, your choice whether to delete yours.

Hence why I said BOTH are guilty of changing things 🙄 The 2011 also basically technically had weeks of fillers - of actual nothing, because it had two recap episodes.

There is a difference between “inaccuracies’ and entire episodes. The 1999 version also made major changes to the tone and content of the next arc.

Toasted Toad

Your comments always include minor spoilers or things to expect. Imo, if the info is something they'll find out more clearly in the later episodes like (OP deleted the spoiler), it's better to just let them find out by watching rather than explaining to them through your comment. You also tend to correct their view of certain characters whether they are cool or not or the power difference (reference to the comment you made about the gap of Illumi's strength to Killua last week when at this point it hasn't been made clear in the anime). Dude, let them find out themselves by watching more episodes.

Astor Lefflinker

@Toasted Toad did I say that that's the only one difference? There were more, even when it comes to fights, and obviously the biggest one is with episode one where the 2011 version made the very gonk decision to cut off Gon's meeting with an important character which explains how he knew about the Hunter Exam and how he became interested to be a hunter. Even with filler episodes, with the first few arcs, the 99 version follows the manga closer in terms of its darker tone which the 2011 made more cartoonish and light hearted. And if you read carefully, I said BOTH versions had inaccuracies.

Thank you guys for posting the YouTube edited versions directly after. I myself don’t like/can’t often do the sync up so it’s nice to not have to wait too long for the edited versions.

Leorio *was* incompetent. He would not have got past the trip from Whale Island without Gon (neither would Kurapika), he would not have got past the quiz without Kurapika, nor would he have arrived at the exam centre since he was going the wrong way, he nearly got himself killed picking an unnecessary fight with Hisoka, he screwed up the gamble, screwing over his teammates in the process, lost his tab to Tonpa, needing Kurapika’s assistance to get it back, and would not have been able to get his tag from the bee girl without assistance. Killua’s actions meant he did not have to fight in the final stage of the exam either. He not only nearly failed himself, but nearly caused the others to fail.

Toasted Toad

You think that one difference means that the 2011 version did not follow the manga more closely than the 1999 version? The 1999 version had already had weeks of filler by this point (they had an entire additional exam stage, a chase between Gon and Mike, two separate adventures after leaving Whale Island) and changed many scenes. The only thing they were more accurate in was Gon’s first meeting with [spoiler]

Toasted Toad

pump out 3 of these please, cant wait for the final arc!

@ThaDoubleB that's why in the golden jellie video I suggested them to watch the first episode of the 99 version where that certain character is included, I provided the video which I edited to not include a certain dialogue from Mito which was not in the manga, I really hope they choose that one for the golden jellie video for october https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKE4SW4ex0Q

Oof very interesting discussion that Ange and Carlie had. I wanna chime in but I feel like I'll add some things to expect so I'll just let them find things out as they watch. But I really can't wait for next week's batch of episodes XD ^Just adding to the discussion with the commenters above, yep the 2011 did nerf Leorio a lot. As mentioned by the others, the three of them opened the gate separately in the manga and in the 1999 anime. In fact, Gon and Kurapika only managed to open the first gate, but Leorio opened the second gate which is 2x the weight of the first gate. That's why it's not really true that the 2011 version follows the manga more closely. Both versions of the anime had inaccuracies from the manga but they're not really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things so don't worry. I just don't like it when people dismiss the 1999 version when it was also great. Mostly those weird inaccuracies are just in the first arcs though. Starting from next week's batch of episodes I don't remember any of those things and both anime follows the manga much more closely.

Astor Lefflinker

Yeah for all the good the anime did, they made some really weird decisions at the start of it. - Not including a certain character at the very start - Making Leorio seem incompetent and weaker than Gon and Kurapika, when his goal is just completely different from theirs. - Weird scene with Netero staring at Machi And if course the general tone and censorship of the early part of the series is weird since the manga is just much darker in tone.

anime nerfed leorio by a lot for some stupid reason. Leorio is actually physically much stronger than both kurapika and gon especially this early in the manga/anime and manga works well around his physical prowess and worst is that some of it leaked into anime cause whoever was making anime was clearly lacking comprehensive abilities to understand what they are witnessing and reading and working with. lot of hunter exam stuff were confusing especially about final part (the 1v1's). no anime only viewer could understand why suddenly people talk leorio up and give him respect after seeing him acting like a weak chump over and over. and they decided to change another scene once again just to make leorio looks like a weak loser with the testing gates. In reality all three of them were strong to open gate by themselves, no goofy power of friendship where they need all three to push to open the gate. instead gon and kurapika both were able to open first gate on their own while leorio opened two gates by himself. essentially in manga leorio pushed 8 tons by himself, in anime all three of them were required to push 4 tons.
