I agree that spoilers is shitty, but i want to point out that when it comes to specifically people watching along with them for their first time, i've got no sympathy whatsoever. Those people are literally using these reaction videos as a market substitute, which is the whole reason companies goes so hard against reactors. I honestly wish every full reaction used a timer exclusively, i'd much rather sync up my own copy of the content and support the creators of the anime as well.

imho, i've got no sympathy for people who litterally use these types of reaction videos as a market substitute. This is litterally why companies copyright strike so many people, because it takes away business from them, which you prove by admitting to watching along for the first time, not even bothering watching on your own through legitimate means. Wish they used sync-up timers and didn't show the actual episode, one day they WILL get hit by a boat load of strikes, it's not a question of if, but when.

Miyagi Prefecture Prelims - it's to determine the best 8 teams that can go on to the Qualifiers. The top 8 from the previous tournament (the Interhigh tournament that karasuno lost in the first season) don't play in the prelims, they got to go right through to the qualifiers. (That's why the guy in the red shirt said that they didn't play in the prelims, because they made it to the semifinals in the Interhigh aka they were in the top 4) Miyagi Prefecture Qualifiers - The best 8 from the prelims and the best 8 from the previous tournament (the Interhigh) play the qualifiers to determine the best school of the prefecture. The team that wins the qualifier will then go on to Nationals "the Spring Tournament". Nationals - One team from each Prefecture (in a few cases two teams) play in the National Spring Tournament. Karasuno didn't have to play the first round of the prelims because they made it into the top 16 in the Interhigh tournament.

One of the things I love about Haikyuu is that they make all strategies seem viable. The show never berate Kakugawa for using their tall player to his best, they never refer to his height as unfair, or anything like that. This is the best they can do with what they got, and they do it. And they lose but not because what they did was "wrong" or anything. I also love that at the end Hinata, the ultimate decoy, saved Kyoko by drawing someone's attention away from her.

So to give a bit more insight on how the tournament for Japanese anime goes in general. They have different prefectures that divides the whole japan into "divisions" they play within that division multiple times throughout the year (Interhigh and Spring Tournament for Haikyuu). If they win the tournament they qualify for the "Nationals". There are set number of teams can qualify for each division. This is usually dependent on the strength of the division or the number of schools it has (for example Karasuno's Miyagi prefecture can only send one team while the Nekoma/Furokudani's Tokyo prefecture can send two). Nationals is the most prestigious tournament for school sports since it is the best of the best of each prefecture/division in all of Japan. And since the Spring Tournament and Nationals are held on the latter half of the school year many 3rd year students prefer to sit them out if they want to focus on going to college/uni or they don't think they can win it anyway. This should work for most sports anime in Japan. Please watch Ace of the Diamond next XD

Okay so the volleyball tournament are all single elimination tournaments. The Sping Tournament is used a catch all for three separate but connected events: The Preliminaries, the Qualifier, and Nationals. The Preliminaries, or Prelims, are what we are watching now. They are the very beginning where the 12 best teams are chosen to make it to the next round. Our boys need top win 2 games to move on to the next part and they get a few weeks off before the next part. The Qualifiers is a best of 16 (12 teams from the Prelims and the 4 best teams from the last tournament are 'seeded', meaning they skip the Prelims) play against each other for the SINGLE winner. Only one team gets to represent Miyagi Prefecture in Tokyo. There are 4 rounds in this part. Finally we get Nationals. This is THE Spring Tournament proper. Being held in Tokyo this year, this tournament has 6 rounds and is played among all the winners of all the Qualifiers from each prefecture. So to be the champions, Karasuno has to win a total of 12 games in a row. Just to make it TO nationals, they need to win 6.

Also, if it wasn’t clear, the spring tournament isn’t really any different to the inter-high. They’re both national tournaments, and in both cases a team must earn their way to being their prefecture’s representative. In the last qualifiers shiratorizawa was the prefecture representative as they defeated seijoh in the inter-high qualifier finals

So the spring tournament is like the last chance qualifiers for nationals. The tournament we saw previously was the summer/fall qualifiers. Basically if they don’t win the whole spring tournament it will end their season and that will be the last time the 3rd years play. If they win they go to nationals and keep playing.

Nationals and spring tournament are the same thing. I know it's confusing. To keep it simple they are in regionals right now. Only one team out of their region will go to nationals and join another 50 regional champions to compete to be the best in the country. Basically they just have to win every game until they make it to nationals.

One source of confusion is that we are talking about the "Spring" tournament when we are still in the end of summer/fall. So, Karasuno has to go through the prelims, then the qualifiers which take place in the end of summer/fall. If they win all their matches in the qualifiers, they get a spot at nationals which takes place during the spring of the following year. Like in baseball, the Spring tournament technically refers to nationals only, but I guess that in the anime, they referred to the whole process as the "spring tournament".

Actually, translators sometime use inaccurate words to make it more fun, like "Shrimpy". No one actually calls Hinata "Shrimpy", they call him "Midget/ Shorty". Personally, I prefer translators to be more accurate, otherwise it could sometime change the vibe of the sentence... but normally they are accurate in important sentences, so it's ok.

MVP is tough if you are basing on performance of the court. Everyone had amazing moments. Personally, I would gauge MVP not on court performance, but who added the most to story during the episode. In this case, the boys all equally provided the win, and Tawada a.k.a "Elvis", arguably added the most to the emotion of the story. So I would go with him, but honestly shocked the Tanaka banana moment didn't beat Asahi hahaha

For episode 12 I believe the captain for the other team should be mvp. He was such a good captain he came to their game AFTER he graduated to cheer them up, and even though he wasn’t part of their team anymore he still acted like their captain after the game and during it. Encouraging them and even ending up changing how Elvis guy played to the very end. He was an inspiration to his entire team even after he was gone. That’s why I believe he deserves mvp for that episode.

The spring tournament is nationals. And to get there, a team has to do well enough in their prefecture’s qualifier tournament to become a representative team for the prefecture. So in order to get to nationals and face nekoma, karasuno have to become the best team in the prefecture. This is because nekoma (and fukurodani) are in a different prefecture to karasuno. So each team has to become their region’s representative. Karasuno is from miyagi prefecture and nekoma (and fukurodani) are from Tokyo. Most prefectures have only 1 representative at nationals, so only the very best team in those prefectures go on to nationals. But in bigger prefectures, they have 2 representatives. Tokyo is one of those bigger prefectures, but they also get a 3rd spot for being the region that hosts the main spring tournament. Because miyagi isn’t one of the bigger prefectures, karasuno have to beat every team they play in the qualifiers in order to make it to nationals. Which means they have to beat shiratorizawa and aoba johsai, or whoever beats them.

Every year there's two Volleyball tournaments. Inter High (Season 1) and Spring Tournamente (current). These both tournaments have qualifiers to see who's the best team in each region, and then the best from each region compete to see who's the best in Japan. Karasuno lost the qualifiers in season 1, Aoba Johsai did too and Shiratorizawa won so they went to compete at the Inter High's Nationals (off camera). Now we're in the secound tournament (Spring Tournament) of the year.

Just a suggestion, haikyuu openings are some of the best out there hence I would recommend reacting to each opening/ending after every season so that the hype is not lost. like if you react to all of them together the importance and depth of the the first few openings would be lost by then. Not to mention the openings get you hyped for future episodes

If I remember correctly, the first match they play in this season is the qualifying match for the prefectural tournament. If they win they go on to play the prefectural tournament and if they win that they move on to nationals. Any reference to the Olympics at this point is for the U-19 team to represent Japan. The only player on that team referenced so far is Ushijima Wakatoshi aka Ushiwaka, who plays for Shiratorizawa, the big bad of Karasunos prefecture. If I got anything wrong I’m sure someone will correct me lol.

Yesss so excited for the OP cover! Fly High is my fave personally! And basically the spring tournament is broken up into 3 parts. There's the pre-lims to determine the top 16 of the region. Then those top 16 go into another set of pre-lims to determine the representative of their region. And the representatives of their region go on to participate in nationals to compete against the other regional representatives of Japan. The entire process is considered the spring tournament though, and it's hard to understand on first watchthrough. I remember looking into the explanations online because I was a little lost myself haha
