It includes a meeting with an important character and more context that was completely cut out on the 2011 version. I think it'll also clear up one confusion you had in the early episodes. It's 100% canon because it's also how the manga started. I edited out a couple of small lines that were non-canon though that might just get you confused in the future so in a couple of scenes, the transition might be a bit weird. So this is 100% canon and I think will definitely enhance your Hunter X Hunter experience.
