To clarify what Ukai Senior was saying about tempo: It's all about when the spiker starts their approach vs. when the setter makes the toss. First tempo: The spiker starts their running approach BEFORE the toss goes up (making the time from toss to spike very fast). Second tempo: The spiker starts their running approach AT THE SAME TIME the toss goes up. Third tempo: The spiker starts their running approach AFTER the toss goes up (which gives the most time for the spiker to see where the ball is going and adjust, but also gives the defending blockers more time to get into position and block). A lot of the time, wing spikers like Asahi will do the slower tempos, especially if the receive was wonky and might make for a harder toss. They wait to see where the toss is going before they start the running approach into their jump. On the other hand, middle blockers often do the quicker tempos in order to throw off the defense and outspeed any blockers. This is one big reason they put Hinata in the middle blocker position, so he could be an effective decoy and be in a good position for quicks.

2023-10-22 11:01:15 +0000 UTCOne of the things I assume is that Coach Ukai's moment of realization is that this is a toss he had theorized back when he was a setter and just didn't have the sheer talent to pull it off and now in Kageyama he sees a chance. For what it's worth, from what I hear from actual real volleyball players, this toss is the least realistic thing in the show: There are rules to how much a setter is allowed to touch the ball and adding this much spin would require breaking those rules. I've heard that watching for ball spin is one of the things referees do specfically because of that rule.
