Nine years ago the Empire of Giad declared war on all neighbors and invaded with the legion. The republic military suffered a huge defeat and then went into the current defensive posture. For five years they monitored signals from the Empire of Giad to the legion, presumably giving them orders. Four years ago those signals ceased, and the Republic military has concluded that the Empire of Giad has also been destroyed by the legion. This was mentioned back in episode two but is easy to miss.

As other comments mentioned, Anju is really self conscious about the brand on her back. In past episodes when talking about other people and her treatment before the shot is often on her back/hair. Key reminder: only the Alba military knows about the 86 being sacrificed. The general public is ignorant and told the Juggernauts are "AI drones". Most of the people don't even know what the cost of keeping them safe really is.

Even the first time I watched it never felt like fan service to me 😅 for me at least, if a scene like that is set but establishes relationships between characters and furthers the story in a way that couldn’t have happened in another setting, then it’s not handed fan service… when it’s completely useless is when i roll my eyes

If the series is entertaining and funny They probably will enjoy it and we could enjoy their reactions to the cultured content 😂😂

Anju's scar which contributes to the more mentioned than shown theme not all the 86 are great people. In addition it establishes there's a secret the squad is hiding from Lena because none of them can bring them to tell her. Even Kurena who has a grudge against Lena and a few episodes ago was openly wanting Shin to break her like the previous handlers thinks it would be too painful for Lena to hear to tell her.

Just to clarify for this somewhat confusing monologue. Race is characterized by physical traits and ethnicity is characterized by cultural differences. For example, I am racially Asian and ethnically Chinese. Race and ethnicity in 86 isn't categorized by Asian or Japanese, but instead by an ethnic color group and then further differentiated by hair and eye color for race. For example, Lena's ethnicity is Alba and her race is Celena (silver hair/silver eyes). Shin is mixed race so his ethnic group would depend on which cultural background he believes in, Rubela or Aquila, but racially he's an Onyx (black hair/eyes)/Pyrope (red hair/eyes) mix. The anime doesn't include this detail, probably because it would be too confusing, but had to introduce the ethnic word "Alba" since this group is blatantly discriminating against other races who don't have silver hair and eyes. In the light novel, Colorata is the umbrella term for all races/ethnicities EXCEPT the Alba. The term "Eighty Six" only covers the Colorata from the Republic of San Magnolia, so Colorata from any other nation would not be called Eighty Six. Now onto Anju's back. Unfortunately, not a tattoo, more of a brand. If you look closely at her back you can see some letters and then fill in the blanks to read "whore's daughter." One of her parents is an Alba. As they explained, not all Eighty Six are good and some were abused because of racial differences, especially ones who looked like the white pigs (Anju who is half Alba), the ones that stripped them of their humanity, and those who have imperial blood (Shin and Haruto whose family originated from the Empire of Giad), the ones that started this war by creating the Legion. The other Eighty Six directed their anger at the next best possible targets since they couldn't fight back against the Republic or the Empire. The majority discriminated against the minority on both sides. The Alba against the Eighty Six and the Eighty Six against their own whose only sin was being born different. Lena’s board and pictures is an anime original addition. It is nowhere in the light novel and I absolutely love it! After rewatching this show the first time I noticed that Lena only started it after she had a talk with her friend about the pictures of her suitors on the wall. Her friend said her team did it as a joke so she “won’t forget.” Lena reacted at those words. She drew pictures of what she thinks they look like and keeps them to remember them even after they die. I hope this was helpful/interesting to read and not too confusing. I have work in 4 hours, but 86 was more important. Good night!

They mentioned it before, but although everyone non-Alba was thrown together as 86, there was still racism among the 86. Anju, as can be seen by her light hair, is half-Alba, and was abused and discriminated against in the 86 camps. She grew her hair out long to cover that brand, and Daiya - the sweet boy - would compliment her hair
