I think it was due to the VA recording on a personal microphone vs industry professional one, due to most likely possibly recording the lines during the lockdowns, since it originally aired in April 2021. Production may have been just a few weeks or months ahead.

Also the level of detail to information required from the audience to give the show and don't tell is only for people who infer and solve what's shown by themselves or along with others. Also must suggest to the greatest anime reactors in Australia(carlie and ange), to watch the p 1, 2 and 3 details and symbolism by youtuber ctrlalt. I think 86 as a series is more for ppl who are familiar (and are already fans of) the mecha genre and light novel tropes. I think more beginner-friendly mecha series like Code Geass or Macross would've been much better.

I know you've already noticed this but there's a scarcity of food inside the walls of the Republic (The White-haired (Alba) people's country). Outside world is full of Legions so the 85 districts locked themselves inside the walls. The lands are limited hence artificial food had become the norms due to lack of farmlands and such. The Eighty-Six are on the boundaries that is almost outside of the walls so they pretty much go hunt for wild animals, breed and care for chickens that then produces eggs, plants their own veggies and fruits. So, if you think about it, the Eighty-Six are much more wealthier when it comes to resources of food than the Albas as they are eating real food which is considered a luxury to them. Though, the Republic do sends them a monthly provisions, those are only artificial food. Go back to the beginning where Lena was having breakfast with her Mom, you'll see how artificial egg looks like. That's why she was so happy when Annette ask her to stay to eat the Chiffon cake together because she used real eggs and milk, real ingredients.

Because of that I watched the first episode and was so confused that I couldn't even describe to a friend what the anime was about and even forgot the name. Until a few moments ago where I started watching with you again I completely forgot that this was that same anime.

But the ppl with white hair are considered "superior" genetically cause they "evolved". They don't have any special abilities or anything, the only thing that shows the "evolution" is their white hair and eyes. Carlie's theory on making a perfect person is what I think is what the show was going for, though its unclear since there isn't anything different about them apart from hair and eye color. Because they consider themselves superior, all other ppl are considered "lesser" or "non humans". You'll notice that both sides call the other "pigs" so that might be confusing. At the start of episode 1 you see the Milize (handler 1 who cares about the "non-humans") get mad when the news announces "no causalities" the news is only talking only about those with white hair. You'll notice that all the mechs the 86 use, have a logo on it. The logo is both the name they go by and I think it represents them as individuals. You'll learn more about the enemy Mechs as the show goes on. Milize (handler one) had sent the enemies location to the Undertaker, which uses a different technology then how they speak to each other. They speak through the Para raider. When she sent the enemies location to the Spearhead squad, she risked telling the enemy where they were, which is why he said stick to speaking during times of fighting. Something to pay attention to as you watch the show. They show the Undertakers logo a lot. It has many meanings as you go through the show. In case you didn't get a close look at it. The show does a great job of setting up how the 86 are treated, as non-humans ("pigs"). This'll be my second time watching the show, so this'll be a great chance for me to catch things I missed on the first watch. Also, as Ange said, don't sell yourself short, Carlie. You're watching anime, which is known to have wild ideas and stories, albeit really good ones; in Japanese, which is a language you're not used to; reading subtitles, which has a lot of story-specific terms that are hard to remember (especially in 86); and politics, which, let's not talk about. You're juggling a lot of stuff while giving us a "reaction" so I really don't blame you. I know Japanese and I still get confused when trying to connect the dots in some anime. Give us all your on-the-spot thoughts and theories. That's what makes it fun! 😄👍Same applies to Ange, ofc. Diving into EP2. Looking forward to more!

If you end up really liking the show, I can definitely recommend rewatching it on your own, there are many little details to notice on a second watch. About the endings, its fine if you prefer to skip them (even though I consider that a crime ;) ), just know that they are free of spoilers and not very long. There is almost always a post credit scene. I made a long list with all the words that have been explained in these 2 episodes, but pretty much all of them have been mentioned already, except for the most important one: Chiffon cake - a very light and fluffy cake baked with vegetable oil instead of butter and a higher ratio of eggs to flour, which causes it to stay moist and soft even at cooler temperatures, making it well suited for refrigerated or frozen fillings such as pasty cream or ice cream.

The characters are quite complex and facial expressions and tone of voice play a large role in understanding certain elements and character dynamics. They're very human and people might not always say what they think or mean. Also, it might help to take note of any Personal Names of the Eighty-Six as you come across them, but it's not a necessity whatsoever

This is a reference to the 1942 American Presidential Executive Order 9066 (notice the number used in the LN and the anime is the actual order number backwards), which resulted in Japanese-American Incarceration during WWII. Just a tiny bit of history used by the author of the 86 Light Novel Asato Asato.

Selene did a good job explaining the phrases above, I will just write about some details that were already there. Rewatching an episode is always an option, there is a torrent of information in words and imagery. It started when the Gilad Empire attacked other nations with drones, called Legion. One of those attacked nations was the Republic of St. Magnolia. And you are right to draw connections to history, I say being German. Some german words are Löwe = lion, Ameise = Ant, Eintagsfliege = mayfly, they are some of the Legions’s mechs, and were in the fight scenes too. St. Magnolia has 85 districts, Eighty-Five. With district 1 being at the center in more than one way. There they made the decision to fight drones with drones so that they would not have *any* human casualties, fight a “clean” war. That is what the silver and white haired population is being told. And Anette is just Lena’s best friend, or is she. Again, all will be explained.

The 86 have callsigns (Undertaker, Black Dog, Snow Witch etc) while Shin has the nickname of Reaper. To the Alba he's Undertaker, to the 86 he's Shin, and to everyone he's known as "The Reaper." REMINDER: After credit scenes are gonna be in nearly every single episode, so remember to that the ED isn't the end.

"Reaper" is a nickname that Shin's comrades gave him, reason behind that will be explained in future episode. The squad name "Spearhead" means the tip of a spear, as you can imagine it means they are the elite of the elites. Based on the Republican's knowledge, the enemy "Legion" will be out in 2 years. The number of the days remaining on the blackboard (129 DAYS) has nothing to do with that, it is the days remaining for their term of service as a soldier.

For Shin, it’s a headless skeleton knight— which corresponds with his Undertaker title. All of their personal marks are drawn by Theo. Same goes with Theo’s Laughing Fox mark, Anju’s Snow Witch mark, Daiya’s Black Dog mark, etc.

Handlers - They’re basically the commander. Processors - They’re the people living in the Eighty-Sixth sector, where most of the other races (aka: the ones who doesn’t have silver hair and silver eyes) live. They’re treated as disposable tools and parts of their machines, hence the term “processor”. Eighty-Six - They’re comprised of people with different races that used to live in the inner sectors of San Magnolia before they were brutally thrown outside to the Eighty-Sixth sector and are forced to fight the Legions until they die. Legion - Man-made unmanned machines that the Processors fight. Any more info are already in the spoiler territory. Para-RAID/RAID devices - it’s a neural network device which mainly functions as a long-range communication device between Handlers and Processors. As Annette explained in episode 1, it’s mostly used in communication to avoid the strain/damage on the brain, but it could be also used to transmit all five senses, as well emotions, to the recipient. i.e.: Handlers like Lena can use the RAID device to share sight; meaning that she can see what the Processors are seeing through their eyes with the use of the RAID device, but it’s rarely used because it could cause blindness (on the Handler’s side). Additional stuff: -Lena is the youngest person to become a Major at the age of 16. -Shin is also the youngest person to become the commanding officer for the Spearhead Squadron (he’s the same age as Lena). -The term “white pigs” are what the Eighty-Six people calls the Albas (the people in San Magnolia). -Albas are known for their silver hair and silver eyes. That’s what I’ll say (for now!) because some of the stuff you’ll encounter will be explained in the later episodes, so I’ll do my best not to spoil much!

That made me hungry for more so I watched all of Steins Gate, OPM, JJK, FMAB, and lots of others you guys eventually ended up reacting to as well. I slept on 86 for a while then decided to just give it a shot. All I can say is that it doesn't get nearly as much attention as it deserves. The story is the most touching. It made me more emotional than any other content I've watched so far. Being a massive fan of the music in shows, it was also some of the best osts and an ending that competes with Akuma no ko from the last seasons of AoT. I'm very much looking forward to these reactions

Lena is the spearhead squadrons handler and she uses the para raid device to either connect to specific processors (the humans fighting inside the mechs) or to all of her assigned squad at once. Eighty six stands for the eighty sixth district in San Magnolia. The thing Shin carved out was his dead comrades "personal mark". He is their reaper so he caries their marks when they pass and carves their names into the respective mark. The mark is always a logo referring to one’s processor code name or whatever that’s called. You know how Undertakers actual name is Shinei ("Shin") Nouzen, but he has a headless skull as a personal mark. Also beware this show loves doing end credit scenes with very irregular timing, like sometimes it’ll be a 2 min scene and sometimes just barely 20-30 sec long, so always check for those no matter how close the ending songs gets towards the end of an episode.
