2023-09-02 14:27:37 +0000 UTCI actually live near the station that Starry is at, its a real place (albeit with a different name). Something that's really cool that most English-speaking viewers don't get (understandably so) is that the locations in this show are dead accurate to real life. Some of the background shots of Shimo-kitazawa are so accurate I could go to them in real life. Especially in episode 9 when they go to Enoshima, its basically a 1:1 recreation of the Enoshima experience. Those stairs are really no joke. But the funny bit is they actually barely went past the first flight of stairs. The escalators are right at the beginning lol. Knowing that adds to the humor of the situation. Also the recurring theme of having a band unite them is a big pun with their band name. Kessoku band means ziptie (which is why there's a ziptie on their t-shirt), but kessoku on its own means unity. Kessoku (unity) + band = Zip tie. or Unity band.

I learned about Kanto from Pokemon too! but after looking it up it turns out a real region name in Japan where Tokyo is located. Same with Ange, I'm also impressed with the detail that they have a special "worse" version of the first song in ep 8. Not only the instruments are mismatched, but you can hear a slight nervousness in Kita's singing, so they rerecorded that part too.

Which would be great for any band let alone a „virtual“ band out of an anime. Needless to say it‘s in my regular rotation too, and available everywhere, including lyrics videos on yt. And the two new songs from spring, released on EP, are great too (Into the Light, Blue Spring and Western Sky).

Also, I think they do show male characters but it's specifically Bocchi's dad whose face they never show. If there's any manga readers out there who know why that is, please share.

I actually put the entire album on my "main" playlist that I listen to everywhere like in the car when I'm driving around with other people. You know most people like to listen to anime music as guilty pleasure or something you don't want other people to know but I don't need to worry about those since the whole thing is just good rock music in general

2023-08-26 20:03:14 +0000 UTCAbout not having any main male characters: Bocchi the Rock! is part of a sub-genre of the slice-of-life genre that western fans call “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things”. Its a pretty common trope of these shows to not have any male main characters.

2023-08-26 19:19:47 +0000 UTCI think one of the strenght but also the weakness of bocchi is that it references a lot of anime so sometimes even if a scene is funny in its own way it's too bad that people miss some stuff. an exemple is like in episode 8 when bocchi is in all blue at the isakaya its a bigand beautifull reference to the end of a anime/manga called ashita no joe. It's a typical box shonen where the young will climb the world of boxing (of course it's simple in the premise but the writing especially of jo is really good). In the last arc Joe fight the world champions jose. Basicly the fight was supposed to be over quick but joe managed to impress and enrage jose, even tho he's pushed back and hit again and again he manage to put on a huge show for all his friends and rivals watching the match and knock down the champion multiple times the fight is basicly a big emotionnal shonen moment that give you a lot of chills. Finally the match go 15 round and so the winner is decided by points. When the referee finally enter the ring to give the name of the victor: Jose, The referee raise the arm of the champions as a symbol of victory but after taking so many of joe powerful punched he can't stand or look straight and his hair became white he look more like the vanquished than the victor. Joe's coach go to confort joe who is sitting in his corner of the ring but joe doesn't answer he stays stil and the whole crowd stand up looking at joe in silence waiting for him to do something. The silence is broken by Joe's voiceover "i burned my fire, until there was nothing left. All that's left is pure white ash" and then a hauntingly beautifull blues guitar start playing with a beautifull wistle "singing" along as we see Joe in all dark white and blueish tone sitting in his corner head down resting on his chest a smile on his chest. And that is the last page of the manga and the last frame of the anime, the finality of joe's climb, the end of joe's story and that scene is damn epic beautifull frustrating and sad at the same time. And so here you are years latter watching a slice of life anime of highschool girl playing in a rock band and you see those exact code of tha last page on bocchi comparing joe's fight to death with bochi first concert out of her cardboard box and that's is really really funny. I mean some one even says "no that the wrong show bocchi".
