About Alex what I meant was that he didn't try to fight back against the atrocities in Ishval, something that he blames himself for; about Izumi it's more about her usual catchphrase "i'm just an housewife", although she is one of the most brilliant alchemist in Amestris she tries to dismiss it and pass as a nobody, nice for humility but also a way not to be involved and do good with her powers
