When it comes to his team and buddies, Mustang gets emotional easily but tries to not show it. The episode where Lust attacked him and Havoc, Havoc didn't die. Hence, he didn't lose his senses. Hughes got killed because he was trying to inform Mustang something that Father didn't want him to know. The pain and guilt stayed with him for a year at least. I remember Mustang cried at Hughes' grave after the funeral ended and everyone has left. Hawkeye came back to look for him. He lamented at the rain (but it wasn't raining). Hawkeye understood and just agreed with him. He loves Hughes so much.

I think Roy seems composed, because in a way he is. Vengeance doesn't have to be out of control to lose yourself in it. Mustang's had ages to plan his vengeance, to imagine killing and torturing Hughs' murderer. and the losing himself in that hatred is what Ed is worried about. He isnt' just outright killing Envy. He could just continuously burn Envy like he did Lust, but he's choosing to torture him. Burn his eyeballs, his tongue. Slowly torture him to death, draw it out as long as possible. And that's choosing to be cruel, in a similar vein that Scar did. Even if Envy 100% deserves it, doesn't mean you can't lose a part of yourself, your humanity in pulling it off.

We also see he’s going out of his way to burn envy’s tongue and eyes in this episode compared to just doing as much damage as possible like with lust, he’s playing with his prey much more than we’ve seen in the past

When he found out about Hughes, he kind of had this 1-2 second moment of being enraged but then dialled it back. So i thought he was pretty calm, but yes youre probably right. Thats what Ed was afraid of

Idk if I agree with you saying Roy seems calm, he’s being drawn noticeably darker, and he even told envy to regenerate, very different contrast compared to the episode where he sternly just kept burning lust until she was ash
