Canute didn't say Thorfinn couldn't stop him. He even admitted that the only way to stop him was to kill him. Canute understands thorfinn if he desired is good enough to go through a large chunk of the army and kill canute. So he wasn't simply just saying Thorfinn was powerless to do anything. I think you two got the most of it but canute isn't just simply saying thorfinn can't do anything. Thorfinn is skilled enough to where if he wanted to he could kill canute if he wanted even with the army near them. Obviously that isn't something that would take place at this point but Canute is well aware of thorfinn's capabilities.
