they don't explicitly mention it in the anime, though Ed did briefly allude to it earlier when talking about how their mom died, but the war in Ishval created the perfect conditions that sparked an epidemic which was further exacerbated by pretty much all the medical professionals being called away to serve the military for the war. Risembool is right on the border with Ishval and was one of the closest places to it and ended up also being affected as the illness was spread by people fleeing Ishval.

2023-07-02 03:18:49 +0000 UTCI love how Fullmetal Alchemist has strong female characters without making them wear skimpy or sexy outfits. The ones we have seen in this series so far -Liza Hawkeye, Maria Ross, Izumi, Lan Fan, May Chang and Olivier Armstrong, I think Winry and Pinako counts too.
