Ed gave a few clues on how alchemy works in their world - he was able to make weapons out of blood because blood contains iron, and he observed Greed's shield is just re-arranged carbon. In this episode, Ed assumed the soldier's automail arm was made of iron. He realized it wasn't when he couldn't use alchemy to damage it. I bet he was going through the periodic table in his mind after the realization.

i'd imagine the reason why kimblee was able to jump over seemingly effortlessly is 1. he's just that good in a sense and 2. he did tell the driver to match the other trains speed, so if the speed matches there's less of a gap/ lag on the distance and speed of the two trains i'd imagine there wouldn't be as much force that he has to worry about too much but to time it for when he would jump so the motion would set him on the correct platform. That's just my thoughts on it though so idk for sure.

Yeah the alchemy was working, you can hear the sound affect and ed just changed his arm. It’s something else that prevented him from changing that big dude’s arm.

I don't think the fusion of alchemy is what gives scar his destruction ability since ed was able to mimick his technique back when he fought slicer in Lab 5. Any alchemist can possibly do it they have to stop at the deconstruction phase.
