Unlike Thorfinn, who acted purely out of trauma, Ketil was always on the wrong side. He was a slave owner and a coward. He thought of himself as a good a man, but ultimately he upheld a system of violence and oppression that reduced human beings to possessions. He may have treated his slaves better than most, but he still saw them as belongings. I'm sure the point is to show that owning slaves creates a fundamental hierarchy of human value, and how difficult it is to be a truly good person (i.e. Ketil) when justifying that system. That's why I think him buckling under pressure *is* him showing his true colours. He was always an oppressor, and this scene revealed that.

Now im not saying arnheid deserved that, but itβs understandable why he did that. The one thing he trusted/loved the most just betrayed him on TOP of everything else going wrong (the whole Canute situation) and now the one thing keeping him together is gone and betrayed emβ¦. like come on itβs understandable why he did what he did lol

It was wrong for him to letting off steam on her like that but i get where its coming from. It was all that petty man could think of in this situation.

2023-06-22 20:39:50 +0000 UTCthe mangaka himself talks about ketils situation and rationalizes his actions. its an extremely flawed character that has good qualities as well overall and its the better slave owner of that time, something very normalized as well, as the mangaka himself has pointed out, or is he a weirdo as well? can we just have a talk about a fictional character as the shades of gray he is. both sides are insane.
