2023-06-23 09:20:20 +0000 UTCI think that what Ed meant about the coins is that he's simply looking forward for Roy to fulfill his dreams of becoming Fuhrer. 520 cens is not much but he's basically saying I owe you something, make sure to live long enough to collect it. He'll borrow more money after Roy becomes Fuhrer and until they implement democracy, means that he also just wants Roy to see it through. Ed hates being indebted to someone and Roy hates not collecting. It's a play on their personality but that this is just their roundabout way of establishing their brotherhood.

You also see him putting some things in motion in that episode. The note is the one he passes to Madam Christmas. … The dialogue between Ed and Roy is Ed affirmin his support. We're following the Elrics, so we know they are the good guys. But from Roy's perspective the very source of support he banked on turned out to be the evil he was to fight. So, he'd be hard pressed to trust someone, especially with Winry as hostage.
