Steins Gate Episode 24 REACTION!
Added 2023-06-05 18:09:12 +0000 UTCHere's the link! Ep 24
And that's a wrap on Steins Gate! We got confused and thought there was a 25th episode when in fact it was just an OVA 😅 Otherwise we'd have given you the finale last week with 22 & 23! Sorry about the misunderstanding in the intro. Nonetheless, we will be running a poll starting tomorrow for the next Patreon exclusive reactions! Our reactions to whichever series wins the poll will begin next week!

I am really glad you guys did end up enjoying this anime by the end, even though you seemed like you were struggling to get invested in the beginning. It’s not really any fault of yours. Through this reaction I realized how difficult it is to jump into this anime as one of your first ones. It is chock full of nerd culture references that aren’t really plot relevant and more so there to be easter eggs for the show’s target audience. Same with the science and tech jargon. There’s also other things that are a matter of taste, like the lack of an ost and drab color pallette. Personally I think those are what make SG standout, and the ambience works for the show. But I also think you guys really needed to see more regular anime first. SG’s biggest strength is it is so different from everything else.

2024-07-20 20:13:03 +0000 UTCSuzuha says she'll see them in seven years, so the lab member joining in seven years lab is her. It's supposed to imply that's when she'll be born, which is why Okabe tells Daru it's an inevitability for him. The OVA is the epilogue the show didn't need, and the movie adds nothing, just doing the same story again but with Kurisu as the lead. Steins;Gate 0 is the story of the Okabe who fails to save Kurisu and then spends 15 years designing the time machine to save her. Sadly, it's a mess of a story which couldn't seem to make up its mind what it wanted to be about. I wouldn't recommend it. Steins;Gate is a beautiful, standalone 24 episode show. Nothing that came after it added to it. I love the show for being character driven. Some find the first half too slow, but that's why it works, because it spends so long developing who the characters are and their relationships, that there are actual stakes to the second half when it all goes to shit. Episode 22 is the peak, that's a heart-breaker, but the Suzuha "I failed" episode is a close second for me, and obviously episode 12 with its shocking Mayuri death is third. I also played the visual novel after watching the show. I wouldn't recommend it, the anime captures 95% of the content but vastly improves on the pacing. The only area where the visual novel did add something was with Faris, who is the Okabe too Okabe for Okabe, which they don't really show in the anime due to her very limited screen time. She also has a really bittersweet ending if you pursue her route, whereby Okabe saves Mayuri, but at the cost of losing his friendships with everyone except Faris. It was a really interesting, and emotionally engaging alternate ending. Was a pleasure to watch through your reactions to this show. Kinda shocked you don't have a Code Geass reaction tucked away in here. A classic anime that strikes me as something that'd be much more up your alley.

2024-02-24 02:15:50 +0000 UTCHi! New Patreon member and long time subscriber here. Steins;Gate 0 and the Makise Kurisu's movie are needed for understanding the plot. I myself was reluctant when 1st watching it and needed a year plus hyatus to continue and fully enjoy this series. Steins;Gate 0 is somber. But it is much quicker paced than the original. Hyoin Kyoma is also much less prominent (if you know what I mean). I was, at first skeptical, but now, I comfortably regard this series as one of the top 5 anime all time. I believe this work has very few stories comparable to it and its execution was very good. With hopes you pick this up again in your channel, patreon or privately, Your Subscriber

2023-11-18 10:16:39 +0000 UTC1. Great reactions; it was quite enjoyable to watch. Steins;Gate is arguably my favourite anime of all time (Naruto is the contender). 2. To answer Ange's question about what I like about Steins;Gate: It's a mix of multiple things. a) I'm a big fan of sci-fi/time travel, so that already made me quite intrigued. b) I love that there were proper romance in the show. c) The characters Okabe and Kurisu were quite interesting/likable; the other characters were interesting in their own way as well and they definitely felt unique from one another. Carlie made an EXCELLENT point about Mayuuri; that she was the sun of the show/story/Okabe. d) It has great (and many) plottwists (even Kurisu's father causing her death could technically be theorized). I really enjoy shows that allows for a lot of theorycrafting. e) The show has some really funny and unique scenes. e) There are some great emotional scenes. f) How the idea of time plays into the story; we get a rather long series of episodes (time) where it's quite peaceful, and suddenly the show's tone completely changes and we can see Okabe's mind rapidly change. g) The show requires some big brain moments/smart characters (Okabe & Kurisu... technically Daru as well). h) The show doesn't shy away from mature content; some of it plays a big role. i) Although there is not a lot of insane music WITHIN the show... the OP is one of my favourite tv-show related songs of all time. It's a JAMMER (which made me a bit sad that you guys had to skip it every episode), but I really wonder how good the show could've been with better music in the actual series, like Ange pointed out. j) The show feels quite unique to other shows, which makes it feel a bit special. Edit: The reactions were so enjoyable I watched all of them in only 3~ days (which is quite fast for me). You guys really provide great content. Looking forward to see the remainder of your One Piece Live Action reactions next 8)

2023-09-29 22:38:46 +0000 UTC+ there is one more season for Steins;Gate called Steins;Gate Zero which goes through events after the completion of season 1. Imo the first season is a bit better but u can still watch that second season too

2023-08-10 22:16:45 +0000 UTCSo guys, after this i can only like suggest a show that has been very important to me since the past few years that i first watched it. Same concept, keeps your mind working the whole time, touches your emotions and your imagination while being very realistic at the same time. Not an anime series but still for me,the best series i have ever watched and i think its going to be veeery difficult for that to change. Series name: Dark. You can watch that on Netflix

2023-08-10 22:10:42 +0000 UTCWhat I love about this show is it's intrinsic lesson: No matter how bad or insurmountable the odds are staked against you, if you don't give up then it doesn't matter if your strides don't amount to much. Through many tries and small incremental growth, In the end you will succeed. And that is also why I would recommend Steins; Gate 0. Without spoiling too much, it is a timeline where Okabe fails and through the blood sweat and tears of many, they manage to get back to the right world line, and the effects can be seen influencing the characters in this "Steins; Gate" world line. Many have criticized Steins; Gate 0 for not being as good as the first one, but to me it isn't a continuation of the first but more of a fleshing out of the original story and the characters. Don't get me wrong it still explores new ideas and themes, but it's more like a complementary starter and desert to the main dish, it only enhances the original. Steins; Gate Is one of the few shows that get extraordinarily better upon re-watching. It is the epidemy of a slow burner, the more time you invest into it the more you get out. Whether or not that journey is on camera or off camera I hope you can fall in love with this show over and over again, like I and so many others have.

2023-07-14 22:39:34 +0000 UTCJust re-watched steins gate and steins gate 0 with my mother because of you two! Loved your reaction to steins gate and honestly understand some of your distaste for certain very non-PC things that would have gotten cancelled in our day and age (at least in the western world). I don't think you need to worry so much about not getting a show though. was really fun watching you struggle with understanding and trying to theorize. We hope you will eventually watch steins gate 0 (and the OVA). Personally it's our favourite season of steins gate, but that's obviously because it continued from the incredibly well built story of steins gate s1.

2023-06-07 12:00:43 +0000 UTCI didn't get to finish this show the first time so I did along with you and I liked it. Not my favorite too though. But I really liked Okarin and his relation with Mayuri and Makise, characters that I liked too quite a bit. The rest of the cast, except for Suzuha who was really funny and baddass and Faris who killed me every time I really didn't care. I also don't love when in time travel media, all the characters we know happen to be key plot devices. Like his friend created the time machine and their neighbour was FB... Too much for my suspension of disbelief. Okarin and his arc was what really made the show enjoyable for me the most, along with some other characters I mentioned and some moments they shared that were made really well and got me emotional. I too expected a darker ending for how bitter-sweet the show was for the most part and I'd probably prefer that, but I'm still happy that things worked out, Okarin and Makise found each other again and to have watched the show alongside with you, guys. You're great!

2023-06-06 19:41:11 +0000 UTCYou guys did a great job understanding the show. It's suppose to be confusing on your first watch through. I feel like the pressure to not "feel stupid" on stream made the experience worse for both of you. I would have advised you at the start that it's okay to not understand and feel stupid. I do hope you both enjoy the eventual rewatch when you do it. It's way more enjoyable to see all the little hints and events that were so enigmatic on the first watch. SG0 showcases a lot more of "likeable" Okarin so I think you'll both like that season more.

2023-06-06 17:07:34 +0000 UTCThe OVA is an epilogue to season 1. You can watch it now. Stien's Gate 0 is basically season 2. Due to time travel it's hard to call it a "sequal". Just think of it as season 2.

2023-06-06 14:37:18 +0000 UTCAs others said, please watch the OVA. At no point you guys said anything stupid. You guys probably had better theories than most of us since you always discussed things after each episode. I aso recommend a rewatch some years down the line. It became my favourite show on my second watch, you'll at least like it a lot more. "El Psy Congroo", in the words of Okabe in episode 23 for why he named the last world line steins;gate: "doesn't really mean anything". It's basically a private joke/catch phrase/okabe made slang. His use and context gives it meaning. Anyways great series ! Hopefully the next one's is as great !

2023-06-05 23:23:45 +0000 UTCI have noticed that a lot of Japanese and otaku terms confuse you, but as you watch more anime, they will become clear. you already know stuff like senpai, tsundere, etc. so it's nothing to be ashamed of, and you can always ask us when you don't understand something :)

2023-06-05 22:43:26 +0000 UTCthe cat has been sighted! other than that. I'm glad you liked the show, and I loved watching your reactions! Steins Gate is definitely one of those shows that you appreciate more after you have watched it, or on the second rewatch. I remember being so confused when I watched it for the first time. I actually dropped it halfway because I thought I had predicted the ending - I realized that Okabe would need to redo all the D-mails thus sacrificing Kurisu. but I couldn't have predicted the way the show actually wrapped up! like you guys said, it's just really clever writing, and overall just a good example of time-travel media.
Martina
2023-06-05 22:32:08 +0000 UTCJust finished listening to your guys' end discussion, so I wanted to comment on a few things (sorry for so much text): I think you guys did a great job with your theories throughout the progression of the story. Carlie, nothing you said was stupid because you're theorizing and trying to piece things together. It didn't help you guys that the show had a very specific way of directing and making simple things seem confusing. This show is based off of a visual novel (a textual narrative [game] with static or animated illustrations and a varying degree of interactivity -Wiki), so things like music, sound effects, and the way certain scenes were animated may be why things felt different from your typical anime. I've never played or seen gameplay of the VN, so I personally can't compare the two mediums. While I was one of the poll voters voting for SG to be reacted to, maybe it really was too early (as relatively new reactors to anime) for you guys to watch. I noticed a lot of the Japanese/Otaku culture distracted you guys from time to time. As for what I loved about SG... honestly, now that I reflect on my memories of the show, I recall I dropped the show 2-3 episodes in because it was so slow and I still had not idea what the show was about at that point (this is back in 2012 or so, and my high schooler brain didn't have the attention span to want to continue). A year or two later, I decided to watch it all the way through because it was so highly rated on MaL, and I ended up loving it. Something about the way this show handled time travel, Okarin's character (also the VA voiced Death Note's MC, which was fresh on my mind at the time), and the relationship between Okarin and Kurisu were all things that left a positive impression for me. Even the sad moments were part of the reasons why I love the show. For example, when Suzu failed her objective because she lost her memories after traveling back in time, and she said her life was meaningless, then proceeded to commit suicide... that hit me hard. I ended up saying a lot more than I planned, which always happens for some reason, but regardless, I'm glad you guys still enjoyed the show even if it wasn't near your favorite shows. Hope to see more SG content in the near future!

2023-06-05 22:15:14 +0000 UTCAs the others have said, I highly recommend watching the OVA and the movie, in that order. Especially, while the show is still fresh in your mind. Then, maybe take a break like originally planned before hopping into SG0. The OVA will answer a very important question you guys had this episode, but I won't spoil what it is. Carlie, I don't think "El Psy Congroo" really means anything in particular. Knowing Okarin's character, he probably just made the phrase up to sound cool. You are right, though, that he uses that phrase whenever he "signs off". Also, Suzu saying let's meet again in 7 years basically implied that she will be born in that time, and of course, Okarin being a close friend to Daru means he'll be like an uncle to her, hence why she calls him that. A couple of other commenters suggested watching episode 23β, and since I haven't seen SG0 yet, I can't comment on that. Just thought I'd mention it as well.

AsterJ
2023-06-05 20:30:08 +0000 UTCThe OVA is pretty much the 25th episode though, it's a proper ending to the main series, and it's VERY satisfying, no spoilers. Then of course, there's the movie. That's the order to watch them. Then, you can watch Episode 23(β), which would also be considered an OVA. The only difference from the regular episode 23 is the ending scenes, the last half of the episode. That leads to the whole of Steins:Gate 0.

2023-06-05 19:23:13 +0000 UTCAnd so it ends. I like to say that the first time I watched Steins Gate, I felt that the pacing was off sometimes especially ep.1. Only after rewatching it, I understood why it was structured in such a way. Sooo, I would highly recommend a rewatch if you find the series interesting. An yeah, SG don’t have much stand out OST piece….but I absolutely love Gate of Steiner lol (especially the version that plays in ep.6 during Okabe random nude nightmare) El Psy Congroo

2023-06-05 19:08:41 +0000 UTCGreat reaction and appreciate the honesty (wasn't too surprised this wasn't going to be a top favorite based on past reactions). Enjoyed it though and it was fun rewatching the series with you guys especially since I haven't seen this in over a decade. What I like about it, and why I think it's highly rated in general is because it really is more unique and less cookie-cutter than a lot of animes out there. If most shonens are kind of marvel/blockbuster equivalents, this one felt a bit closer to an indie/auteur sci-fi film. Okarin was a more unique character and it allowed for more unique emotional beats that isn't the standard (character losing a fight/down in the dumps -> brief flashes of image of friends/family -> new second wind with inspirational music). Like his speeches in episode 22 that wouldn't really work in most other shows or with a more standard MC. I also liked that they weren't afraid to make Okarin incredibly obnoxious in the beginning (again, most shows will stick to more standard characterization for more broad appeal) and the obnoxiousness wasn't just a comedic gag or mostly a surface level personality trait (see: Daru 😒, or Zenitsu or Mineta from MHA). It served a more concrete purpose and was a psychological cushion for him that we see why he needed in the latter part of the series. I understand that the whole SERN thing or lack of a more coherent and concrete antagonistic force really isn't gonna be for everyone and I did think the show in the beginning did kind of tease it a little too much for what they were ultimately planning for it, but I think it was just part of the subversion and ultimately wanted to be a more intimate small scale show. As far as lack of more character development, especially for the more side characters, yeah basically there was more thematic and structural focus rather than fleshing out the side characters and they were largely vehicles for showing who Okarin is by showing how he made friends with each of them and how he would help them and why some of them were drawn to him in the first place.

2023-06-05 19:03:47 +0000 UTCSteins;Gate is probably my favourite anime, however it didn’t become my favourite until after I watched Steins;Gate 0 and saw how much that Obake had to go through. I’m also a strong believer in subs over dubs but in my opinion Steins;Gate is one of the two anime I prefer dubbed. I think it’ll definitely add to your enjoyment of the series and help you better understand it. The whole dub was written and localized by Okabe’s VA and he absolutely killed it!

2023-06-05 18:49:48 +0000 UTCAnge, I totally felt the same as you for my first watch of Steins;Gate. Where I felt really lost and found it harder to enjoy for part of it because I was so focused on me not fully understanding everything. I rewatched it years later and was able to enjoy the first half so much more by enjoying the characters, and then that further made me enjoy the latter half of the show more as well. I hope you rewatch this in some years and perhaps you'll have the same experience.

2023-06-05 18:44:15 +0000 UTCSo ep 24 is the actual canon ending to the visual novel. Ep 25 is an ova that takes place directly after the ending of the series. Then the movie takes place after the ova. Both the ova and the movie take place in the steins;gate world line. S;G 0 takes place in an alternate beta world line between episodes 23/24. Zero is the story of the Okabe that fails to save Kurisu, the same one that sends the video mail 15 years back in time. None of these are necessary to watch but it definitely makes you appreciate Okabe’s character more, especially zero.

2023-06-05 18:43:38 +0000 UTCThe last ep(the ova) explained the event happened after Steins Gate. you should watch it before steins gate 0, doesnt mean that it related to the 2nd story but it introduces a character before watching 0.
