@Vincent - If we were talking about what show they should watch next, I'd agree with you, but I was thinking more along the lines of 1 - 2 years from now for a reaction to the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist.

This word isn't something they bring up often in the show but it is basically what happens when the laws of equivalent exchange is broken and the exchange is unbalanced. But the homunculus theory makes sense because they had the materials for a human body but without a soul (because Al's didn't bind) and without a philosopher's stone to keep it going like the other homunculi, it died right away.

2023-05-27 20:07:30 +0000 UTCThe episodes so far have repeatedly mentioned Al's soul do not need sleep. Al was scared of that, as shown in this episode. However, since he's a positive boy, I believe he would have learned to make good use of the extra time.

2023-05-27 19:54:57 +0000 UTCMy own theory is, the result of Ed and Al's transmutation was supposed to be a homunculus. However, Al's soul didn't bind to it and it's the only soul available besides the alchemist (Ed). Hence it died right away.
