The boiled egg insult was hilarious, also you know FMAB is starting to get good when Hawkeye reaches waifu status! Haha

Russell Gambardella

About roys flame alchemy. His alchemistic formula on the glove lets him control the oxygen or rather lets him reassemble and concentrate the air molecules into pure oxygen. The same gloves the formula is on is made out of pyrotex which easily sparks when rubbed together. So he makes a highly combustible oxygen cloud around his target which he connects with a small thread of oxygen to his gloves, then rubs his gloves together to create a spark which travels along the small fuse like oxygen string to the big oxygen cloud which explodes then.

Sorry if it already got commented somewhere. About the alchemistic transformation, the circle with the signs in it is like a math formula, you need to know which formula to add in what place to get the desired outcome. Every symbol has a meaning and can be used in many different ways aswell as combined with other symbols to change them completly. Once your transformation circle is complete the alchemist activates them by putting in some energy (it will later be explained where that energy comes from) the transformation then cannot be stopped and will fullfill the written formula. Thats why you need to know EXACTLY how it works unless you want a catastrophic failure. Some alchemists will tattoo their formulas on their skin to activate them whenever they want without writing them down first. Kimbly (long haired prisoner from the first episode) has his formula on his inner palms, only when he puts his hands together the formula and circle gets completed and he can use it. Thats why his arms are in the weird shackles, so he cant put them together.

Huh, interesting I didn’t know that.

The locations are echoes of real life places across time periods. Xerxes is Persia/Golden age of Islam, aka the place where real life Alchemy (the predecessor to Chemistry) flourished. (Also, Xerxes is the name of a Persian ruler.) Amestria is more or less a parallel to the height of third reich. (King Bradley is Führer after all.) Xing is a no brainer allegory to China, perhaps during the three kingdoms period. Ishval is a bit difficult, maybe a mix of Nepal,India, Middle East after the Golden Age of Islam? Just my guess.

PackerMan

Xerxes is most definitely Persia/Golden age of Islam. Because that is when IRL Alchemy flourished.

Episode 18, minute 26:45. Great observation Ange!

first off, next episode hype - I think it's poetic and both DS and FMA:B ep 19 are the de facto "best episode so far in the series" "they don't waste any characters" - perfect way to describe it, the author somehow is able to turn minor characters into memorable, complex beings that we can relate to, probably the number one reason this show is ranked so high. I do enjoy Ange's initial reaction to every character: "I don't like em", eventually evolving to "okay this one's not bad, I hope they stick around" - I went through the same cycle 😁

Ang

you're right, I wanted to say middle eastern not central European, complete brain fart for me lol

Ang

Sumer and Babylon are middle eastern. They were in modern day Iraq lol. They aren’t in the Europe continent at all and don’t have anything to do with proto european civilizations. They are just influential and high profile partially because of the bible’s mentioning of aspects of those civilizations. But yeah for Germany it’s why I mentioned central Europe. I was thinking Germany, Austria etc. i just didn’t know enough about those nations to know for sure.

Veya

Lmao

Carlie & Ange

agreed on almost all points, only thing I'd add is Amestris is very likely heavily influenced by Germany (fuhrer as the head of the country), and Xerxes is probably more so the early central European dynasties like Babylon or Sumeria

Ang

Yall not ready for the next few episodes

I'm glad you are recognizing how no character in this show is wasted. Everyone has also room to grow or change. This is gonna blow your minds later on with how crazy it's gonna get.

Hans Wurst

So a few things you miss heard. The legend was not about the destruction but about the beginning of alchemy. Great reaction nevertheless

SleppyPanda

man i love carlies reactions. bocchi the rock when?

ONEEIGHTEEN

I'd appreciate you turning up the volume of the videos a little, guys. I'm watching it at 100% and still hear you and the show a little low and I don't think I've gone deaf yet 🤣. I can still listen to you and the show but slightly low. I know Carlie is a little sick in this but I've noticed in previous videos too. Thanks!

KaijinGarou

Why is this guy insisting so much on the shooter not needing to be good? Is he talking shit about Maria Ross' aiming on top of accusing her of murder? That's beyond evil.

KaijinGarou

As far as these countries being modeled after real countries 100% for some of them. Ling and the Xing country is easily modeled after Imperial China. Besides the general aesthetic, Mei has a panda, Ling has slint eyes (lol) and the emperor has like 85 children. ‘Xing’ also means star in Mandarin Chinese. They also can detect “lifeforce” which is also a Chinese Wuxia trope but there it’s usually called “chi”. Ling’s bodyguards however are modeled after Japanese ninjas and kunais used in the eastern alchemy again, Japanese, so it’s a slight mix but mostly Chinese. Also fun fact, since Freiza was mentioned, Goku (or kid goku at least) is also influenced by Son Wukong, another Chinese legendary fictional hero, with the tail being the obvious tell and also having “Son” in the name. Ishvalan is definitely middle eastern but I can’t pinpoint exactly where, seems like a Persian/Islamic influence. I know there’s overlap between the two at various times in history. Might also have some Indian and other island indigenous influences. I believe the creator had also said the people are partially based on Ainu people, natives of Hokkaido before the Japanese colonialized and absorbed them. The main country Amestris is also definitely a modern, turn of the century, post industrial revolution 19th/20th europe judging from the aesthetic and technology. Probably a mix of various nations though. Seems more central europe and UK rather than France or Spain. Xerxes is likely Persian Empire. More so than Ishvalan. Don’t know much else besides that, though.

Veya

Roy... what have you done mans has lost the plot (next episode) never doubted you for a second my guy! XD
