I think it was more than 10 years ago since I watched this show idk why I didn't feel odd back then. maybe a glimpse of Al explaining his view on other's life would have made this scene smoother

2023-05-11 03:51:46 +0000 UTCAl doesn’t want people to die if he can help it. Both he and Ed don’t even want to kill in defense of themselves, let alone actively stand back and watch it happen. They value life a lot more than most because of what they’ve been through. Even in alchemy human souls are invaluable and the brothers were punished severely for not understanding that, so Al being okay with someone dying now for their cause that they technically don’t even need to survive would make zero sense for his character.

He's so nice that he was willing to protect her despite as you said, they were trying to do him harm. This is a goat anime series but unique character writing isn't quite one of the strengths.
