Instead of a "time loop", the concept you were looking for in the previous episode is an "attractor". In Chaos Theory, sometimes there are points that random events all converge around (check out the butterfly / Lorenz's strange attractor) and the idea here is obviously that all world lines, no matter the small individual changes, converge around the death of Mayuri Shiina. In order to avoid this eventuality, you need to make a big enough jump to get to get out of the range of effect of this attractor.

2023-05-24 02:06:25 +0000 UTCI just finished the english dub of this episode and I was wondering what you all were on about. Turns out it's only in the Japanese version. 🤣

2023-05-08 12:19:01 +0000 UTCFinally catching up to the show with you guys. Episode 14 just gave me full on goosebumps. Brilliant! I am watching the English dub and then watching the Japanese reactions with you guys. There is a slight divergence between the two versions. Some of my theories hold up in the english dub but not in the japanese version (atleast from the subs) and vice versa. All my notes on the show so far point to Daru as Suzu's father.

2023-05-08 10:58:39 +0000 UTCDude I love this comment so much (David Caine's). I was kinda sad about how much they weren't "getting" the characters (especially Okabe) in this show. They seemed genuinely put-off by his actions (all of the ones you listed) even though he was consistently doing good things for people. He just doesn't know how to be vulnerable. That's pretty much it.

2023-05-07 08:31:21 +0000 UTCMystery anime/movies/etc where you have to theorize about what's going on and trust that the show will pay you off with answers are some of my favorite. You just gotta be patient and be okay with not "getting it" for a while. Enjoy the ride.

2023-05-07 08:28:56 +0000 UTCHonestly it kinda seemed like they weren't enjoying it for the first 10 or so episodes lol. They said the characters were "insufferable" but idk... I kinda chalk that up to them taking the characters too seriously. Carlie thought Okabe was FORTY YEARS OLD ffs lol. I kinda love the characters in this show. Faults and all.

2023-05-07 08:27:21 +0000 UTCLOL Carlie looked SO checked out during episode 14 when they started talking about the world lines and world threads (the threaded...?). It's really not that complicated, though. All of the worlds lines (can be thought of us smaller pieces of thread that make up a rope) in the Alpha "rope" lead to Mayuri's death. Thus, they have to make a big enough change to switch to a NEW rope... the "Beta" rope. All of this is explained pretty clearly but it maybe you guys don't read all of the subtitles because of chit-chat or what have you. Over time, reading subtitles becomes incredibly natural so y'all will get there.

2023-05-07 07:54:09 +0000 UTCthe "quirk" themselves were signs of much more dept of the characters, I don't see how you thought the first part was c-tier, it is arguable one of the best characterisation and character interation while building intrigue and hints to future stuff in any show I've seen. The show was slow moving on purpose, it wasn't meant to be a high-octane thriller and it never pretended to be. It was a psychological mistery show that puts you on the mind of Okarin the mad scientist with all his quirks and crazy shenanigans and makes you think exactly what you thought of him as "quirks" and then slowly recontextualize everything to understand exactly why he is the way he is and why other characters are the way they are. The seriers lets you come to the conclusion and understand the characters yourself as if you're part of their group rather than spoon feed you how you should interpret their decision like how it seems you'd liked it to be judging by your "hbo shows" comparaison, you want the show to tell you the character has developed these particular "character beats" rather than see that, I actually love how Steins;Gate does things, remind me of why I loved Breaking Bad so much;, despite how different the two shows are, both took their time slowly developing their character through seeminly pointless interactions and quirks that all later culminated in how great they all ended, so that when the characters react a certain way or feel a certain way it actually makes sense I think it comes from bad reading of the charcters and their interaction to think that "very lop-sided and the characters don't end up with that much more depth" because it is the exact opposite, almost every interaction meant something, either hinted at stuff, showed or contextualized the character's personalities or tightened their relationships for future events to make sense or actually advanced the plot, none of them no matter how pointless the convesation seemed were actually pointless. It is sad seeing people think of one of the best characterization in tv as c-tier and see the more straight forward part that is consequence of the first part as the "s-tier" part lol but everyone has their opinion. I think people with this opinion expected it to be a "high-octane thriller" but the show made it quite obvious that it wasn't since the first episodes

2023-05-05 07:08:38 +0000 UTCEh, while there were more signs that there were more to the characters than just their quirks...it really wasn't *that* much more. The issue is they still repeated the same quirky character beats for 90% of the time, so the ratio is still very lop-sided and the characters don't end up with that much more depth than they could have had. Even most c-tier hbo shows can develop more character beats in the same amount of time, nevermind the a-tier ones. And the actual thriller part of the plot was also very slow moving, so in addition to not working well as a character drama it didn't really work well as a high-octane thriller too. The thing that saved this anime was the back half that actually ramped up the thriller part of the plot and tied the character work back to what was done in the first part and had a rather neat structure that folded in on itself. They increased the emotional beats and pathos. This is about the only anime I know that jumped from a c-tier to an s-tier.

2023-04-28 20:20:42 +0000 UTCThe characters are more enjoyable now because they are not being played for laughs anymore -mostly. At first most of them are some of the most quirky and tropey of any show, like really harcore Japanese pop culture quirks. A lot of the times at first when you guys were perplexed, frustrated, or annoyed, it was just meant to be laughed off because the ridiculous nature of the characters. But I think that was just the Japanese humor not translating immediately. But gradually and from the beginning there were always signs that there was more to most of the characters. Okabe reveling in the fact that he was the one with money to buy the metal the Oopa, but ends up gifting it to Mayuri anyway. Okabe trading with Mayuri beef strips in their soup, but letting her have everything while claiming he took what's his. Okabe saying he'll use Suzuha's grief in his experiments, but doing everything possible to help her meet her father. Okabe comforting Kurisu-tina calling her a dear friend, while claiming he has manipulated her for his ends. Okabe claiming Mayuri is his hostage, but merely he was scared of her dying like her grandma, and his whole act was just a front to put people at bay and not confront reality. That whole insanity of the beginning, though people will still say slow, it was just the perfect and necessary set-up for bigger pay-offs.

2023-04-28 20:18:39 +0000 UTCYep, the insane people out there would very much cancel him. Sad but true.

2023-04-27 19:08:56 +0000 UTCI think I'm of the minority that prefers Daru over Mayuri.

2023-04-25 17:02:37 +0000 UTCThey're so wrong for doing this to Mayuri. Couldn't it be Daru or something? 🤣

2023-04-24 03:59:12 +0000 UTCEngrish in anime makes me cringe every time, but the way Okabe delivers the line is hilarious. Just a quick story about my friend and the name "FB". When I introduced this show to a friend years ago, anytime he heard the name "FB", he thought the show was talking about Facebook, and Moeka was just obsessed with social media😂. Tbf, Moeka is always on her phone and the setting takes place in 2010 when Facebook was popping back then. Also, Ange, the nips getting hard just means you've become an anime-lover. It's just part of the process 😛 Jokes aside, I know there are still a lot of things to be explained, but it sure feels good seeing you guys get the answers you were looking for when you first started the show.

2023-04-24 01:37:08 +0000 UTCAs a teenager, I used to work in retail for Bed Bath & Beyond and I can definitely relate to Carlie lol. I have a reoccurring dream that I've gone back to high school for a second time, and despite having already graduated once, I can't understand or learn anything academic this time around and it's a terrible helpless and lost feeling, no matter how hard I try I can't make sense of anything.

2023-04-23 21:35:23 +0000 UTCI knew you guys would like the show but I didn’t expect it to make Ange’s nips hard 😆

2023-04-23 20:56:52 +0000 UTCI had this recurring dream years ago that eventually stopped, about a squirrel running around on the ground in front of me, but the setting is always different. Same squirrel, same behavior, just always a very beautiful and different background setting. I always woke up feeling emotional about it for some reason LOL

2023-04-23 20:38:24 +0000 UTCI was a professional theatre student in high school, and similarly to Carlie's ballet dream, I used to have nightmares about forgetting my lines or not even knowing them to begin with. I think those kinds of dreams can be scientifically explained as your brain preparing you for a possible bad situation that you may go through.

2023-04-23 19:55:54 +0000 UTCAllow me to explain the Jelly Mayuri: In the visual novel, there's actually an allusion to a timeline in which SERN got Mayuri and instead of killing her outright they decided to use her for a physical time-travelling experiment and, essentially, she became another Jellyman Report. In the anime, they decided to just show that glimpse and not explain it for some reason.

2023-04-23 19:48:16 +0000 UTCI AM MAD SCIENTIST. IT'S SO COOOOOOOL. SUNOVABITCH. (remember me saying, a few episodes back, that someone would go all out on the EngRish? Yeah, Mamoru Miyano is just incredible. If I'm not mistaken, his actual spoken English isn't that bad xD. And yes, especially by today's standards, Okabe would be cancelled 100%)
